Alright Canes, I’m sitting here stacking plates the way you guys do bussing tables at your local Dennys, having snorted enough preworkout to make Charlie Sheen go: “hey pal, slow down” and I’ve got some thoughts about tomorrows big game against the biggest frauds in the SEC.
First things first, I’m not the guy that gets wrapped up in “must wins” or getting overly emotional about one game, especially not one against an out of conference opponent in Week 2.
IDGAF about FSU beating LSU. What they say on Twitter ain’t even on my radar. I dont feel like because they won, we need to somehow “respond”. That’s tired short term thinking.
However…we need to beat the living **** out of these bums.
Not because FSU, but because of us. Our fans, our boosters, our supporters that matter, they’re on shaky ground. The goodwill Mario came in with last year took a major blow, and we need to finally prove we can win these types of games that we quite frankly have **** all over ourselves in for years.
So why do I think we finally get it done?
Lance Guidry: the last big Miami game we won was against Notre Dame. Guidry says “hold my beer” (literally) as just last year he dominated Notre Dame with a bunch of kids noone wanted. There’s something to coaching in big games. It’s true he doesn’t have a ton of experience in them, but this dude is built for this. Our defense actually looked prepared, aggressive, AND disciplined for probably the first time in 20 years. Much is being made about his matchup with Petrino but ask yourself which of these guys ended up in a neck brace after too much partying, and which guy didn’t. There’s your answer.
Henry Parrish: The backbone of our woeffense last year he somehow managed to rip off almost 5 yards per carry. He seriously should have received Heisman votes. So we got him a legit OL and what did he do? Averaged 10ypc. We’ve got a stable of good backs but when this game gets tight, this is the kid that’s going to take us over the finish line.
Kam: I noticed last week that Gabbert avoided quite a few interceptions by just eating the all or throwing it away. Guidry threw some looks that will be INTs against much of our schedule. A&M thinks they have the advantage with their WRs and they’re gonna force the issue and see if we can stop it. Kam will have an INT in this game.
Francisco Mauigoa: two generals on defense. The way you beat a talented offense is by not beating yourself first. Between him and Kam this is the most leadership we’ve had on defense since our glory days. We know busts can happen especially in big games, but this dude is a man. He’s another coach on the field and when things get tight, people can lean on him.
Matt Lee and Javion Cohen: I’m putting them together because they are serving the same purpose. A&Ms DL should be solid, and the outside is going to be a battle, but TVD (and any QB really) has always struggled with pressure up the middle. The interior of this line has the potential to be the best we’ve seen in decades perhaps. In the same vein as Mauigoa and Kam, having two smart, talented veterans along the line making sure everyone knows what they’re supposed to do, is gonna carry us against a younger Uber talented DL. I expect us to run right at them, but not a ground and pound. I expect unique formations, misdirections, keeping their DL on their heels rather than letting them pin their ears back.
The biggest lingering question remaining is what do we see from Shannon Dawson and TVD. It’s been almost 22 months since TVD lit up Duke and had people talking Heisman. These guys will determine whether we win by 3 or 16.
Verdict: Miami gets it done in the Red Zone and stiffens up when A&M threatens
