This is the first thing in the past decade

A lot of people were upset he was hired. Coker would have been a fine interim coach for a bowl, had Butch left before the Sugar Bowl, but he was not the answer long term. Anyone with a pulse could have won a title in 2001. Anyone with real HC qualities wins it in 2002, going away. Any coach worth a **** doesn’t have the drop off we saw under Coker.

Yeah, hindsight is 20/20, but there were several people mad as **** that Coker was given the keys to the fastest sports car ever, with no experience driving. Then there were others happy he was hired, and not Barry Alvarez.

I did not want Barry Alvarez. We would not have won the NC in 2001 with Barry Alvarez

Because Barry was a worse coach than Coker? People said the same thing when JJ was hired. He'd never win here coming from Oklahoma State. He did pretty well here, because he was a great coach. Barry Alvarez was a great coach. Not saying he was JJ, but he sure as **** was better than Coker.

Imo would have ruined player chemistry, would not have led us to 2001 championship. I’m not the only one that thinks this.

When Butch left everyone knew we had a special team. Coker was the best way to take advantage of that. That's not to take anything away from Alvarez or any other coach, it was just the best way to stay the course. We have a national championship and a stolen national championship to show for it. Those probably wouldn't exist with anyone but Coker.

Perhaps, but if that were the case why did JJ do well here after Howard left? He was FAR from being a Miami guy, and everyone hated the hire. Good coaches get the job done. I don’t see a good coach, with that 2001 talent, doing badly. There’s a **** good chance the 2001 team does better with a better coach. Remember, we almost lost to VT and BC with that talent, so it’s not like Coker was getting the most out of them. Also, good coaching might make the difference between the refs ******** us and us killing Ohio State. Coker has them sleep walking most of the game.

True. We just needed someone that wouldn’t get in the way
So when we hired JJ in 1984, we would have been better off hiring Gary Stevens or Tom Olivadotti? I mean we just won a title and didn’t need to change anything. Wouldn’t want a good coach coming in and getting in the way or anything.

The only time I can recall that "on the verge" feeling was 2000. It was different than previous and subsequent coaching changes. If you weren't around it, it's probably hard to understand.

Obviously not the right decision. Just referring to the thought process that seemed to be going on.

But you can just continue with whatever groundbreaking point you were trying to make because we all need a refresher about the Coker hire around here

Well if people wouldn’t continue saying it was the right hire, I wouldn’t have to say it wasn’t.

And sold out the last 15 years for one NC.

Any decent coach would have had 3 or 4 NCs and continued winning for the next decade.

Coker was a babysitter and anyone with half a brain knew that. Most knew that the team could win a NC so were okay with it for the year but no one wanted this guy to be the coach.

He was never a long-term solution but they extended him after the NC instead of looking for a real coach. You could see the signs in 2002 that he was a poor coach and it just got worse year after year.

Really, it is a the same fans that support coaches long after they should have been fired that fall for these types of coaches.

At the time, we just didn’t want that 2001 NC fūcked up. There was a greater risk of that with a brand new guy like Alvarez. Especially Alvarez whose offensive approach was unliked.

Yes it would’ve been better if we had of gotten another coach, anybody but Alverez, and we may not have gone through the 15 years of misery. But that’s all hypothetical anyway. That’s water under the bridge, and it was meant to happen.

That was our fate, it was meant to happen.

Funny thing is, if he hadn't just taken the Rutgers job, Greg Shiano would have been the head coach.

Absolutely, Coker put us in the mess we're in today (which Manny is getting us out of). The DC and OC could have one the NE 2001 game. 2002 should have never come down to a pass interference call. We were far superior to OSU, but we're out coached. That's squarely on Coker.

Coker blew up the Miami dynasty.

You felt good about Coker?

I honestly don't think I've ever heard anyone say that.
People talk bad now about Coker cause of hindsight. Reality is he has one of the better offensive minds we have had. Some people's ceiling is a coordinator. That was his. We all tried to be smart and say were transferring out if u bring a new coach. Results under Larry weren't all that bad regardless. He just had no clue how to compartmentalize ****

You’re really doing work man, pointing out that the Coker hire was a bad one.

Keep it up. People need to be educated.

This is far far from the truth. He was never a great offensive mind...not even close. I'm not sure what you could even point to to suggest this.

Coker ran about a dozen plays over and over. We all saw what happen after the talent. It should not take the best talent in the history of college football to move your offense. Even in 2001 & 2002 the team kicked way too many FG and punted more than they should have.

Just like Richt, coaches knew what was coming...they just did not have the athletes to stop it. There is a reason he killed the program and not being a great offensive mind was part of it.

Please go look at the 2005-'06 offense and tell me again how he was one of the better offensive minds we had. LMFAO.

There's a reason his next job was at UTSA and it sure isn't because he was some offensive genius.

deserving of being on The U part 3 (besides Notre Dame game).

Never felt so good about a canes coach since Coker(didn't work out)

I don't think anyone felt GOOD about anyone after Schnelle left.

We didn't feel good about JJ, and when he was selected - and especially after his first year - it was like - oooooh doo doo!

We didn't know diddly schitt about Erickson, either.

We didn't feel very good about Butch - but at least we knew he knew something about UM.

Clappy - the players kinda forced that. Dumbasses.

And then, disaster set in - for the duration.

I like what Tony Montana is doing. He's pushing the envelop top, bottom, left, right, inside out, and outside in.

I really have a lot of hope now - the first new coach I've felt good about since Howard cut his own throat.

Sad part is Richt saw from a far what happens when you rely on family
  • Before Bowden hired his son as OC they were losing 1 to 2 games a year --- maybe
  • Hires Son Jeff - they start L's 3, 4, 5 and 6 games

what do they say about those who repeat history?
