RBhurricane87 gets it. UM's campus is far too small/compact to accommodate any sort of stadium. There is a small patch of land on the north side of campus (right next to the Mahoney/Pearson dorms) that could accommodate nothing more than a moderate size high school football stadium - not including parking. More importantly, Coral Gables in no way, shape or form could accommodate the traffic/parking/tailgating associated with a college football game. Ever driven on US1 or Ponce during even moderate traffic jams? It would be a logistical nightmare.

So if we did build something, where to? There honestly aren't any "good" answers that that question. If you want to be close to campus, you'll run into traffic and parking issues. If you care more about traffic and parking, you're going to have to look 25-30 miles outside of Miami to get it. The closest thing to a good answer is next to the Marlins' park which has the space for a stadium (plus multiple ways to get to the game), but if you wanted to tailgate you would be doing so in a parking garage.

Sadly, the BEST answer was a full renovation of the OB back in 2008 when we had the option. We all know how that ended up...

Blackmail City of Coral Gables by threatening to open biggest homeless center and drug rehab facility in the world with addition room for 100,000 ISIS refuges(Obama would help with the funding). It could be part of "out-reach" program. Tell the city that maybe if we had money and approval for on-campus stadium we might do that instead. Let's see if those wonderful city father prefer some traffic 5 or 6 times a year or 100,000 peace loving Muslim young men. Just a thought.

the city of coral gables just recently denied a petition to allow 6-7 outside tables for 20-30 patrons. that is how ridiculous they can be. if they wont allow the tables, they are not going to allow a stadium, parking and traffic.

if you dont live in the city, you will not understand how stupid these people can be.

If there can be a thaw in relations between USA and Cuba, surely there can be some compromise between UM and the COCG.

For the Potatoes that get hung up on the "on campus" part; please imitate Budd Dwyer. This is about getting a stadium that meets our needs. We're not talking about filling in the lake and building a stadium. So please show respect to Budd Dwyer and follow his lead.

you overestimate the citizens of coral gables and the premium they place on quiet and seemingly unperturbed areas . . .

another example? they won a long battle against publix to redevelop the monza avenue store, which is the worse publix store ever. publix put hundreds of thousands of dollars behind the campaign, and nothing.

Can't read the article either. Did the entire process only take 10 months or was that just the construction? I've worked on a minor league baseball stadium and the design process alone took over a year. For a 40-50k person stadium, I can't imagine the entire design/build process taking any less than 2 or 3 years. I absolutely think it's worth building a stadium close to campus (if it's even possible in Coral Gables), but you shouldn't think that it's something we could bang out in a year's time.

Initial Design/Presentation, Hearings, Approvals, Architecture/Engineering Construction Documents, City Zoning and Building Dept. Review and Approvals, Bidding, Awarding of the bid, Construction Contracts...2-3 years??

I don't see it happening in CG either.
