The Work - July 7th

Owens was a monster last year. You were right. Wasn't he a Butkus semi-finalist?

Lmao. Yeah, yeah that's it.
Owens had the worst season of any Miami LB in the last 7 years. He had a huge problem getting off blocks, was never around the ball, and made almost no plays. He looked totally lost. He did show some promise late in the season as a pass rusher.
[emoji817][emoji817][emoji817]

Idk what you were watching. He showed a ton of a promise as true freshman. The converstion was about which freshman was a darkhorse to start at some point during the season. He got a ton of playing time, and I remember him starting a couple games--whether he was listed as a starter or not (you can thank personnel groupings for that). His future is very bright.

I watched every play he made against division one opponents in slow motion and stop action. And I keep track of every play. His ratio of getting off blocks quickly was by far the worst of any Miami LB in the last 7 years. He had 1 tackle for loss and 3 tackles within two yards of the line of scrimmage. These are absolutely terrible numbers, historically bad numbers, given the amount of playing time, which you rightly point out, was considerable. This doesn't mean that he can't do well this year, but I wouldn't count on it. The fact remains that he showed absolutely nothing last season

Break out the chalkboard on his ***! Show him who's boss!

Thanks for the update on Gadbois, now we can put that to rest. Dude made it sound like Golden just dropped him out of nowhere. Between you and the poster in the Gadbois thread, it appears Taylor was fully aware of his situation.

The problem is that Al has been throwing players under the bus for several years now, so he has no credibility for truth. With all due respect, Pete's "source" might or might not be worth a crap. We live in a world of disinformation and have an institution that has be run by one of the queens of it for 15 years. We cannot trust "sources" in it, from it, or about it.

My basic nature, disposition, and belief system leads me to always side with authority, but our BOT, Donna, and Al have beaten it out of me. I do not trust any of them as far as I can throw Mark hanging on to Al. Accordingly, my take on this is this: kid tried to commit to Al's get fat program by using deer spray, but refused to accept the loser mentality Al sweats out of every pore so Al use first to punish him for the second.

By the way, how is that kid doing. He is still in our prayers.

Fantastic. Ready for school and sports again.

Great to hear.

Bottom line I see us easily loosing 4 games...FSU, VT, Clemson, GT....and possibly one or two more.

The Mike Smith story makes great contrast to what JJ did to make THE U great. JJ would take quick LBs and make them fast DEs. Al takes DEs and makes the slow LBs. JJ moved players on defense forward to increase speed at each level. JJ wanted wolves at each level, except DT where he wants a couple grizzle bears with quick feet. Al goes the other way to increase size at each level. Al wants fat cows, average cows and lean cows at the three levels of defense except DT where he wants some sort of bolder. The difference that makes on the recruiting side is small ankles and round butts vs thick ankles and lard butts. Al is trying to create the very team that JJ embarrassed out of college football -- and people wonder why we do not like Al Golden.

This, McCord would've been a **** raiser in JJ's defense at DE.

Shoot...

McCord probably would've had a monster career under the last coaching staff, to be honest. Marcus Robinson was a solid contributor for us and I don't think he had half the potential of McCord.

Why recruit and sign Ryan Mayes and Mike Smith? Seems that they have very little chance to succeed.
This isn't defending them, nor Chumley or any of the coaches...but while we want every guy we recruit to be an All-American, you also need those guys who may not be every-down impact players, but can fill in the holes on Special Teams and on scout team in practices to give your offense/defense a good look at the opponent's gameplan as you've scouted it.

If Mayes/Smith don't end up being stars, maybe they're those types of guys instead. I'm alright with that. In a perfect world, sure, you want your backups and their backups to be as good as your starters...but this world ain't perfect.

Yeah but...

You try to sign as many studs as you can. Those studs play special teams until they're ready for full-time roles. You don't sign guys with the intent of them being full-time special teams players.

You sign the best players in your backyard and the worst case scenario is that they end up being a solid special teams contributor.
This is partially why our special teams suck, they're filled with JAGs. You want a special teams unit that is mostly filled with guys who will eventually be starters. That's how it's always been around here. Kellen Winslow and Andre Johnson played special teams before earning starting roles.

Remember when we would kick the ball off and our whole kick-off team would be down there before the returner even had a chance to get going? Yeah.

McCord is an all-conference player under any other staff. ****, if they used him like a real 3-4 OLB (Think Clay Matthews position before Capers kicked him inside) he could probably be a all-conference player. The two biggest personnel tragedies of the last 4 years are McCord and Tracy Howard. Gosh **** it, Golden

I agree w/that, and how it once was, as I alluded to by mentioning that you want your backups and their backups to be as good as your starters...but that's not always going to be the case.

To boot--Mayes/Smith came from Northwestern. It's not like this was a couple of kids from Delaware or Alaska that we took fliers on. These are those players in our backyard that we signed.

When the studs you want to sign are going to F$U, Bama, L$U, etc...you get the guys you can close on (which there have been far too many whiffs on), and then you try to coach them up (which we all know is a major problem).

We're talking about 2 guys who are going to be RS Freshmen this season, too...acting like they're busts. They're not, at least, not yet. Their role as RS Freshmen IS that Special Teams/scout team guy role, unless they're a super-impact guy who's ready now. And if that were the case, they wouldn't have redshirted, would they?

Kellen Winslow/Andre Johnson aren't walking thru that door. We may have some guys with potential and talent, but we don't have that level of guy on the roster that we can make wait their turn and help us on Special Teams in the meantime. That's just not the makeup of this roster at this point in time. That's where we want to be, I agree, but to try to imply that Mayes/Smith are busts because they aren't those guys...that's just crazy talk. Different players, different eras, and definitely different (read: sh1ttier) coaching they're getting.

In the 01 title game we had Sean Taylor and Kellen Winslow killing people on specials.

Just watch what they do to Chad Thomas' career if they're still here for another few years.

Well I should've started off my post with stating that I was never high on Mayes to begin with. Kid made very few plays in high school. He was signed cause of height and potential.

What I'm really referring to is the fact that we pass up local studs...kids who are productive down here...to sign "projects" or "evaluation specials". Then 9/10 times those kids come here and do jack ****. I wasn't referring to kids that we lose to FSU. (sorry, I should've cleared that up)

For the sake of beating a rotting corps I'll use a certain player that many people on here wanted.

A 6'1" 197lb Linebacker who runs a 4.4 and destroyed everything moving in high school...with offers from TCU, Nebraska, OSU, Pitt, Cincy, etc etc etc. Certified stud, explosive athlete, but light. You sign that kid and he kills people on special teams for you until Sophomore or Junior year, where he's finally got his weight up and is ready to contribute regularly on defense. Until that day comes you have a 6'1" 200lb heat seeking missile on special teams, you don't have a moderately athletic JAG running down field and covering kick-offs.

If you sign guys who were moderately athletic in high school you're gonna get mediocre special teams.

What they will do? These are the 5 star DE from his class, it is safe to say he is behind every one except for the one that redshirted, and that is debatable frankly.

One of the 5 star DE from the 14 class got burn as a true freshman with 2.5 sacks for the perennial recruiting national champs.
One of the 5 star DE from the 14 class had 11.5 sacks as a true freshman.
One of the 5 star DE from the 14 class had 4.5 sacks and was a 1st team freshman all american.
One of the 5 star DE from the 14 class had 41 tackles, 4.5 sacks, led his team in tackles in its bowl game.
One of the 5 star DE from the 14 class preserved his eligibility and took a redshirt. Probably a good idea academically, he is at a top 5 university.
One of the 5 star DE from the 14 class burned his shirt for 7 total tackles, no sacks, no forced fumbles, but some valuable experience dropping into zone coverage.

I think Shirreffs is just a lot better than people could have imagined a guy with no major offers could be. I was blown away by his tape. His mobility if great for a long, rangy guy. His decision making looked good. His PA passes looked polished. His accuracy was way above average. It seemed he was always getting the ball to guys in stride. Seriously, I don't think I have ever seen film that good of a guy with no major offers on signing day. Everyone with film like that has always had several major offers. It's not like he put up good numbers but is 5'10". He's a legit 6'5" guy.

In no way was this a back handed compliment to Kaaya. This is just a kid that is far better than anyone I've seen with NO major offers, and better than many with offers. Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at #2 by mid-season. Maybe sooner if that #2 guy needs to actually play.
Freshman player to watch Evan Sherriffs....seems like a back handed compliment when you have Brad Kaaya the Maxwell Award Watch List QB. Does this mean that none of the freshmen are any good?

Or maybe Sherriffs is better than people thought. Doesn't mean he's going to play any meaningful minutes though.

His film is really nice. He has great touch but I'm not sure about his arm strength. He not afraid to put the ball in a spot either, he's decently mobile too. Honestly I like him a lot. He'll probably never see a start here if Allison is as good as advertised but he may be one of those guys like Ryan Williams, trust him in a spot to have to step in and finish a game if someone gets knocked out.

What does it tell us about Paul Williams when freshman CB's are more ready to play with limited Paul Williams time over veteran CB's with maximum Paul Williams time?

Antonio Crawford situation sums up Paul Williams situation nicely. Veteran who has played major snaps and is one year away from a shot at the pros instead decides to sit out a year in order to not be here anymore.

I played DB Antonio Crawford sucks! If he actually makes a roster Cowboy that will be a minor miracle.

Football - WVU Athletics

He actually landed somewhere in a stronger conference, with a more recent ten win season. Was a good try though.
