The Work 7-17

How realistic is a DB class of Carlton Davis, Cole, Irvin, and Johnson at this point?

At this point, not realistic.

Should our Canes win 10+ games and a bowl, they'd become very realistic IMO.

No where near as cut and dry. Specifically when two of the guys on the list apparently favor a school who isn't likely to reach those goals either.

All you did was list the things that would get you to go all in on the staff as opposed to what you currently think of them.

It's an opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

I appreciate u following me around though.

Oh its an opinion? The clarification was much needed. The "IMO" in the first post wasn't enough. My opinion? It isn't all that bright to simplify recruiting down to wins and losses.

I don't recall ever claiming to be bright.

You on the other hand, are superbly bright for someone who attempts to condescend those you e-stalk.

Oh wait, you're one of those e-stalkers from Real Cane Talk. It all makes sense now.

The Dorsett experiment at KR/PR should be over. He doesn't have it.

This I agree with. I don't like Dorsett on returns. Leave him full time at receiver n let him stretch the field on offense.

Best return men we have is Duke and Coley. Burns and Elder have shown flash there. Waters and Lewis could have some potential on returns teams for us as well. If Berrios plays this year I expect him to get a crack on returns, and Jamal Carter.

But we'd be stupid to put either Duke or Coley back there, unless we really need them. I'd say we're probably looking at Yearby, Lewis, Elder and Burns

Port Knox;1908214 Doubt we see Duke return kicks this year. Way too big of a liability in his contract year. [/QUOTE said:
I don't know why people continually believe this. sammy watkins returned kick-offs. tre mason, starting RB for auburn returned kickoffs. Duke could easily do it and score. This team needs this with questions at QB and DT.

I'm expecting Cole to flip soon. He is never at FSU for nothing they do but is always here. Carlton Davis is a plus. I want Davante Davis too. I'm losing faith in jaquan and but I believe Irvin is on board.

Burns hasn't done anything how can y'all crown him over Gunter.

THIS^^^

Gunter and Howard are our 2 best DBs, Burns should blow up this year, but as of now Gunter is the better CB and should def start over Burns if healthy.

Excited to hear about Corn Elder's progress.

IMO our returners should be:

- Stacey Coley (only on a few punts, but keep him fresh most of the game)

- Corn Elder (kids HS tape was amazing, can't wait to see him this season)

- Artie Burns (only if he can hold onto the ball)

- Jamal Carter (just broke ST26's power clean record measuring explosion and his HS return tape was very nice)

- Herb Waters (has shown flashes getting deep and on some end arounds)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is Malcolm Lewis back to his pre injury speed and agility?

I agree with another poster on Dorsett, he is just not a return man.

Braxton Berrios should redshirt this season.

Keep Duke off returns this season!

He looks pretty good to be 360lbs.

That is a BIG man, but he doesn't look fat at all.

I think we "want" Burns over Gunter. I am not a db expert at all but I noticed two things about Burns. He sticks to everyone very tight-- that is great. BUT he never seems to turn around for the ball--seemed like he could have had a number of picks last year. If he starts to hawk the ball some, I think we have a sensational db.

I don't think anyone is against his ability to to big things on returns. This conversation has been had before. Basically fan philosophy is either best players on the field or we can't afford to lose him so save him for offense. After the way we saw our season tank when Duke went down I'm a little torn. But I still think if I was coach 8ball is on the field a few times for returns every game. But the hope IMO is another athlete says I can hold this down and represents. We need another person to own the KR/PR role.

I believe Carter had a couple of returns last year and did not look very good.
I would always give Duke the first KO of every game, he's fresh, he changes the field and then it gives the other team something to think about when the KO.
I like Malc on PR, he is solid with his hands and is more of a one cut and go guy, PD just is not a returner....
I have no problem using Burns, Elder on KO, they are both explosive and are not starters, so its a good way to get them PT.
I would be interested in seeing Yearby or even Berrios on returns as well, both the quick types, could really excel in PR.

Coley can too. He has shown it. Think just throw in Duke or Coley sometimes on returns, they can house a few. I'm sure someone else will emerge too. I can really see Waters being a threat on special teams too.

I really agree about Carter and kick returns--he's not spectacular there. Plus, I'd rather keep him fresh so he can bust the maximum amount of heads on D.

Not sure I agree with Duke returning kicks anymore. He's going to have to be THE guy at RB (even with Gus/Yearby behind him). Can't afford for him to take a crazy hit from a full-speed gunner that knocks him out of the game right off the bat. Everyone needs to remember what our running game looked like with him injured last season.

PD is like Benjamin was on PR, boom or bust, can't make guys miss, but has enough speed to leave everyone if he finds a lane. On PR, the ideal guy is one who has the potential to take it to the house, but consistently can get 10-15 yards per return by making a guy miss and getting up field quickly. I like either Malcolm Lewis, Elder, Berrios, or Yearby in that role...I'm cool with any of them for that, really. Coley might do double-duty on KR and PR, though (however, I'd rather not do that for fear of losing him on Offense).

My pick for KO returns from day one? Coley/Burns. Either guy can take it to the house easily. Just block it up and give one of them a lane. Done.

Burns hasn't done anything how can y'all crown him over Gunter.

Every game I saw Burns play in, he was the main one getting picked on by the opposing offense. I don't trust Artie Burns at all, especially against Louisville with that offense AND those stud WR's.

I think Burns is playing out of position, he looks like a safety honestly.

I think Burns has the athletic ability to play corner and he can be a great one. Its his Awareness that is the problem. He either turns around too late or not looking for the ball. He can Blanket a reciever no problem but with the good QB's you need Ball Skills which he didnt have last year and he looked the same in spring but he missed a lot time due to track. he will get better though, The team will push him. Corn and Gunter will push him to be great.

can wyche play at 360? Also, i heard some of the guys really like different physically, are they really doing well in weight room?

I don't care how well you carry it, 360 is 360. The guy has some work to do to get into shape, that's why you always want your JC DL to come in January so that they have the entire spring and summer to get in shape. He has to work quickly, but I'm hoping he can get down to the 340s by fall.
