I am an alumni and have been following the U since 1979, graduated 1987. For many here, football and Saturday afternoon in the Fall is all they care about. Unfortunately, starting with Thad Foote and now Shalala The U is more about academics and less about football. In the beginning Miami was known as Sun tan U, no longer. The moment we went into the ACC the playing field change in a positive way for the University and not for its football team: revenue sharing. Revenue sharing is simple win, lose, or draw the U gets a paycheck. No longer are we the beneficiaries 100% of what the football teams make. Also, we are the academically in the top 40. My friends this means one thing your core classes, SAT/ACT score and GPA have to be 20% above average in general or Billy Bob is not entering the U. Players in the past like Gore (learning disable) would not be able to play here. Taking all of this into account, we will be competitive but our chances of winning a national championship have been diminish. I see us being a true contender for the the championship 1-2 time every decade. Its a ***** but we must accept the facts. :neonu:

I'm tired of Stanford taking all these kids that can't qualify here.

I'll keep saying it. And I'll keep getting ignored. The NCAA minimum for GPA on SAs is going up from 2.0 to 2.3 in 2015 and will also require higher minimum test scores to get into school. This is a huge benefit for us. I would guess a pretty good percentage of kids won't get admitted to any school if those rules were in force today. They also raised minimum GPA to 2.5 for JUCO kids. It will give us one less excuse to lose recruits based on academics, which can be replaced by another excuse (handlers, money, defensive schemes, need to get away, need to feed the fam, etc.)

Spot on. Don't forget to mention that these brainiac blowhards shudder at the thought of having anyone of the coaching staff be anything resembling jimmy Johnson. .I bet coach coley gets yelled at for his tweets nowadays lol. Its a joke.

It's funny people blame academics but Miami, Golden, and staff do everything they can to help these kids. It's up to the kids to do their part to get into school.

Langham, at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds with 40-yard dash time of 4.5 seconds, has all the makings of an elite college football receiver. Miami coach Al Golden and his staff saw that, and offered Langham a scholarship during a summer camp in 2013.

Langham committed on the spot, but Miami's offer came with a caveat: A coach would visit Santaluces every three weeks to check in on Langham's grades.

Miami made the situation clear to Langham, but how to overcome his anxiety while taking tests wasn't as easy to decipher.

Langham said he spent an extra hour doing homework compared to his peers. He also made it a habit to speak with his teachers about the best way to study for an upcoming test, asking about extra credit frequently.

The strategy worked, and Langham was able to boost his GPA and earn an ACT score that should ensure his admission into Miami."

I don't understand what's wrong with asking a fcking student athlete to...be a student. do what you have to do to make it through college so you can get paid on Sundays. If that truly is your dream, you will make it happen. All this, blaming academics and **** is stupid if you ask me. Why even make athletes take classes. Just let them enroll as football players and not have to take any classes what so ever.

BTW, Stanford is quite often a strong, near powerhouse, in multiple sports. This argument is stupid.

We use the same academic standards as everyone else for athletes. Core course GPA and ACT score.

Miami academics are too good to admit many local kids who could play here, who go elsewhere and star.

Miami academics are not good enough to hang onto a local kid like Gibbons, who wants to go to Stanford -- a truly top academic institution.

Kinda sounds like our target market ain't wide or deep enough.

Blaming a higher education institution for being too hard to get into is preposterous. These kids are given an opportunity that is only given to 1% of all high school students. The least they can do is get their GPA up to a minuscule 2.whatever it is. They are already given more leeway than every other student in this world, they don't need anymore.

Best athletic department in the country, and by wide margin. Sports like volleyball and water polo and track and field don't receive much attention here, and are often mocked, but when you go to a school in the West they are a big deal and lots of fun to attend. Babes galore at those events. I had one roommate who used to sit in the stands merely to scope out dates.

Lost a kid to Stanford; your argument is invalid.

The GPA changes don't take affect until 2016. As of now the minimum is 2.0 core GPA and an associated qualifying score. Why do they keep talking about the requirements are higher for a student athlete at UM? I only ask because I spoke directly with their athletic academic counselor and was told the requirements are the nCAA standard.

It's the core classes that get most kids, but we do have minimums that the sliding scale does not impose.

You can't compete with the $EC. They will let anyone in and they will also pay them. They really don't give a **** about academics. What was the last championship Stanford sniffed?
