THe "U" : Academics shuts out many local kids..period.

Grades is a crutch we use as an excuse for our coaches not getting the job done, plenty of other schools seem to be able to get the job done.

Stop, please stop. We use the same standard as 95% of the NCAA. The only impact negatively Shalala has on football is the coaches hired on her watch.
 
Stanford is 2nd in the country with 104 NCAA Division 1 titles. Losing STUDENT athletes to other schools doesn't seem to be a problem for them! Instead of blaming the higher ups at these Universities who take pride in their schools, let's blame the kids, parents, & high school coaches who could care less about these kids long term futures. Their only concern is the dollars that these kids will make when the make the league , which 99.99% will never see!!!
 
Sorry fellas. The original poster is wrong. That info is what has been perpetuated to fans on these boards for years now, and it just isn't true.

Of course, the university has general admission standards higher than the Marshalls of the world on average; however, if Golden really wanted a student-athlete to matriculate, he has the green light to make it happen provided the student-athlete meets baseline NCAA/ ACC standards a step above Marshall but no more than any other major program in the country.

There is one reason and one reason alone we aren't getting some of the players we want. And its winning.

Golden needs to win already. **** a 9 win season. He needs 11 ******* wins and to dominate on the field in 2014. Do that, and we will get a few more kids than we've been getting. I couldn't give less of a **** about academics, handlers or any other bull**** excuse. ******* win games, make the program exciting, stop trying to raise choir boys and loosen the reins and you will see local kids respond.
 
We shouldn't lower our standards to get people in, seems to be the American way now. If someone can't make it just lower the bar a little.

No that's not true.

I am one of the biggest Golden bashers here but its the Administration that is the principle roadblock because it won't pay for a top notch coaching staff, it is too sensitive in regards its and because of its admission requirements especially for JUCOs.

Golden's mediocre *** is just a symptom of the bigger illness.
 
Every school needs to be like Central BTW Miramar n Champagnat and just give out grades to make sure these kids get.in. If they have a 3.2 gpa then all they need is 16/17 Act n 920/880 SAT.

UM Academic Requirements & Recruiting Dates

NCAA Academic Requirements
Students must graduate from High School and have a grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 in a core curriculum.
You must also achieve a minimum score on your ACT and SAT this is between 37 and 86 on the ACT and between 820 and 1010 on the SAT.
Remember that the higher your GPA, the lower ACT or SAT score is needed; this works both ways of course, the lower your GPA then the higher ACT or SAT score must be.

UM Academic Requirements
A 2.9 core and a 15 (60) means you qualified for the NCAA.
You need 17 on the act to get into Miami; you must have a minimum of a 2.5 and a 17/820 to gain entrance into the school.
If your core is a little lower and the score a little higher, you can qualify for the NCAA but not UM.
UM doesn't use the sliding scale!

If we got Cook, Michel, Rudolph, Lane, Gibbons, Valentine, Harris, JC Jackson, and Wilson -- are we even having this conversation? Plenty of talent leaving us that CAN qualify here.

Yeah because we lose so many recruits to Stanford.
 
Back in the late '80's I organized a Hurricane Club/Alumni event at the Capital Center outside D.C. It was a reception before a UM-Georgetown basketball game. I spoke with a local HS basketball coach from one of the local (DC) Catholic schools. This coach had sent a learning disabled basketball player to the U. I can't remember which one since we had a bunch from DC at the time. He told me UM had a special program to help such students. I don't remember much about the conversation, but I assume this program might still be in place. A common learning disability is dyslexia--I don't know what this particular basketball had. I imagine that some sort of special program might still be in place for such kids. In a sense, tests like the ACT and SAT must create special problems for some learning disabled, such as dyslexics, because it takes it longer for such people to decipher the the material.Yet, they might have as high a level of intelligence and intellectual ability as one who tests out very well.

In that sense, testing, whether the standardized aptitude tests like the SAT, or the tests given in school coursework, might discriminate. I suppose there are procedures, such as untimed tests, available now, to discern at the real underlying aptitude. So, I wonder if kids like Frank Gore, with real identified learning disabilities, will end up being excluded.

I can't remember the last time we lost a kid who committed to Stanford. I think we competed for a few over the years, but not many. The interresting thing is, I think Stanford does take some California Jucos.

But you'll never persuade every kid to stay in south Florida. Believe it or not, some kids just want to get away.

I imagine that most of those schools you mention are accredited...Champagnat isn't. It's a shame because it is committing a fraud on the parents who send their kids there. If you look at the list of most of the organizations supposedly "accrediting" Champagnat they certify stuff like kindergarten and child-care, etc. Now, they seem to be making money by bringing in marginal students who want to get eligible for college football. What a racket this all is.

Where does this come from? Something official put out by the university? I don't believe it. Schools often have some flexibility because some don't test well, have a disability like dyslexia which makes it difficult to do well on an ACT or SAT, etc.
