The pass rush...

is making it extremely difficult on our secondary. Having no difference maker off the edge forces our DB's to cover for a longer amount of time. So we blitz, and when you blitz to create pressure you also create bigger windows for QB's to throw into. Good QB's like the one's we'll face in ACC play will find them.

I'm only pointing this out because the secondary has taken the brunt of the "our biggest concern is" comments and I don't agree with it.

Our dline has created pressure all season… we’re not blitzing bc the dline doesn’t have a difference maker “off the edge” that’s a made up narrative.

I don’t know if that guy is in the roster. I think our fans have hyped our DL like crazy.

We got a lot of bodies but not the elite that we are all looking for. Do we have any top 3 round NFL DL? I don’t think so

Let’s find out
Agreed...I was hoping Kelly could make a big leap and be that guy but we haven't seen it yet. I think Bain needs to lose 10-12 pounds to get a step faster to close in on some of those sacks he's just missing.

The de’s dropping is why Guidrys defense is so confusing. There’s no perfect scheme but his is as good as you’ll find to defend todays offenses. My only knock is too much soft coverage in the secondary. Btw our pass rush isn’t as much of an issue as people think, teams are just getting rid of the ball in the quick game not allowing guys to get home. I expect more physical coverage going forward.
I wonder what Guidrys personal calculus is. Obviously he changes things up depending on the opponent.

Against Drake Maye and Jordan Travis I wonder if he's going to be dropping the ends into coverage and blitzing alot. Those QBs can dissect the secondary so I wonder if he'll prioritize pressure or keeping the QB contained and maximizing bodies in coverage.

Possibly a different game plan yesterday knowing the field conditions would be tough for tight man to man.

Their biggest pass play has nothing to do with secondary. We got caught covering a shifty RB out of the back field with a defensive end.
Which isn’t the first time. I hate that ****

Missing multiple top end starters, in a road game against an overmatched opponent in less than optimal weather conditions. Of course Guidry isn't going to send the house and try to make Temple one dimensional. People forget that Miami had Weigman running for his life a couple of weeks ago, it's not like this team can't get after it, just that Guidry isn't reckless with it like Diaz was.

People need to understand that this D has been **** good in non conference play, if you were to actually watch film. Yes, there have been breakdowns, breakdowns that happen more often without Kam on the backend, but outside of those, this D has tackled well, created pressure when required and also created turnovers. Of course someone is going to be able to take advantage of an alignment or playcall, it's modern football. Even the most talented defenses of the last decade have had nights where they were shredded, even against mediocre teams.

It’s a long season and I’m hoping that our CBs come into their own but they have had some rough goes at it defending WRs thus far. Then as @djnellz stated, we in particular have issues covering WRs that can stretch the field.

Defense stepped and played lights out when it mattered/ it was needed against TaMu. CB covered well and held their stud WRs in check for the most part. Guidry and the DL created havoc for their Qb sending blitzes and missles from all angles. Yeah that was before the injuries but those guys will be back soon. I ain’t worried…

Atm WR is likely the best we will play. Didn’t like Temples Anderson getting as many but 46 came on one bust.

The fake Miami had a WR catch 8/80 on us as well. I agree that Stewart is the best we will face this year, but that doesn’t mean we won’t face some capable WRs. I think in most cases Guidry will have it covered but that doesn’t mean that early on it’s not something to keep an eye on. More so, it underscores how we need to pick it up with CB recruiting in the HS ranks, not to mention I’d imagine we hit that position hard in the portal as well again.

They are both weaknesses. The issue here is that the lack of a consistent pass rush compounds the issues in the secondary.

Not a big fan of our philosophy on the back end of our defense. A lot of soft coverage and spot dropping...leaves large open windows in the zones.
CB's playing a ton of off coverage, giving up easy throws.
The commentator yesterday even said something about it and mentioned that Cristobal apparently wanted to see us challenge receivers more at the line.

I even remember seeing a few disgruntled faces on the sidelines after our CB gave up an easy 9 yard hitch route on 3rd down playing off coverage.
Spot dropping?? Earlier in the year we were pattern matching. Why the shift?

I’m not a defensive guru but yesterdays plan looked different to me than what we’ve seen most of the year

Things were way too easy for Warner where I’ve not seen that in the first few games
This! I've seen Guidry mix in soft zones from time to time but nowhere near the extent he was calling it yesterday. I believe it had a lot to do with the weather conditions. Also I could have sworn that Guidry was employing pattern matching earlier in the year. Why start spot dropping? Was that for the same reason?

Got it, our DEs and CBs are mediocre. Guarantee we get pressure in games we need it.
Mediocre might be too harsh, but we don't have a lockdown CB and we don't have a DE capable of getting to the QB often. But hopefully we get Mesidor, Deen and Kelly back soon. I think Kelly can eventually be that type of DE. We do really need to step up CB recruiting.

Guidry is doing a great job with the personnel he has.

Well, you're agreeing on something that's not true! We need good college players to win in college. Jus cuz Yu or the poster Yu agreed with doesn't mean we don't have that you or the poster is not in the NFL or scouts.
