Our starting front four has played 1.5 games so far this year. Mesidor is the most experienced and accomplished pass rusher on the roster. Most of the rush against Temple came from the inside with Gore and Taylor doing the heavy lifting. There was very little blitzing against Temple because statistically, their quarterback is a far better player while being blitzed than just facing four. Remember, their whole offense is predicated on getting the ball out quickly and quarterbacks who can diagnose the blitz tend to have a lot of success in those types of offenses.
Now, I would have preferred they played a little more aggressive on the back end and there were a couple miscommunications in the first half against Temple which got them gouged for big plays. They seemed to clean up a lot of that in the second half and pretty much shut their offense completely down.
There are a few points we need to realize before we overly critique what the defense did. First, safety isn't exactly a great depth position for us and having Kinchens out not only limits what types of coverage you run, it also greatly increases the odds for communications breakdowns because he's the guy giving orders out there. Secondly, our cornerback room is full of guys who can do somethings really well and others not so well so we're constantly mixing and matching who we're playing based on what the opponent's strengths are. We have to play coverage in a way that doesn't expose some limitations in the secondary. Last year we played a ton of press coverage and got whipped. A lot. we were also a top ten team in sacks but you wouldn't have known it because our defense sucked and got roasted by everyone. Personally, I prefer Lance Giudry's approach of altering his defense depending on opponent and situation. He hasn't needed to empty the bag of tricks against most of these teams. Let's face it, they've allowed 17 total points to Ohio, BCC and Temple and none of those games was ever slightly in doubt. You definitely call a game differently when you're in complete control of it than you would in a nail biter. I guess we can nit-pick some of the coverage breakdowns against Temple but we also have to acknowledge the adjustments in the second half.
Right now, given the talent inherited and the significant time starting players have missed with injuries, I don't think anyone can have a legit gripe with the defense so far. That's understanding the level of competition is going to increase and expecting similar results against the better offenses on our schedule is not realistic.
