The pass rush...

Mesidor is a dude. You might as well say Jared Verse isn't any good either because their numbers were identical last season.
If messidor was 6’6 he’s a 1st rounder like verse is talked up to be. He is certainly a dude but he’s a tweener. He does many things very well but isn’t elite at anything in my opinion.

He can maybe catch on as a backup but he’s not an nfl starter talent. He’s also on the fragile side. The Ravens would be a good spot.
Agreed. I mean't to add the word "starter". He can definitely stick around in the league as a backup to a dual threat NFL qb.

Our starting front four has played 1.5 games so far this year. Mesidor is the most experienced and accomplished pass rusher on the roster. Most of the rush against Temple came from the inside with Gore and Taylor doing the heavy lifting. There was very little blitzing against Temple because statistically, their quarterback is a far better player while being blitzed than just facing four. Remember, their whole offense is predicated on getting the ball out quickly and quarterbacks who can diagnose the blitz tend to have a lot of success in those types of offenses.

Now, I would have preferred they played a little more aggressive on the back end and there were a couple miscommunications in the first half against Temple which got them gouged for big plays. They seemed to clean up a lot of that in the second half and pretty much shut their offense completely down.

There are a few points we need to realize before we overly critique what the defense did. First, safety isn't exactly a great depth position for us and having Kinchens out not only limits what types of coverage you run, it also greatly increases the odds for communications breakdowns because he's the guy giving orders out there. Secondly, our cornerback room is full of guys who can do somethings really well and others not so well so we're constantly mixing and matching who we're playing based on what the opponent's strengths are. We have to play coverage in a way that doesn't expose some limitations in the secondary. Last year we played a ton of press coverage and got whipped. A lot. we were also a top ten team in sacks but you wouldn't have known it because our defense sucked and got roasted by everyone. Personally, I prefer Lance Giudry's approach of altering his defense depending on opponent and situation. He hasn't needed to empty the bag of tricks against most of these teams. Let's face it, they've allowed 17 total points to Ohio, BCC and Temple and none of those games was ever slightly in doubt. You definitely call a game differently when you're in complete control of it than you would in a nail biter. I guess we can nit-pick some of the coverage breakdowns against Temple but we also have to acknowledge the adjustments in the second half.

Right now, given the talent inherited and the significant time starting players have missed with injuries, I don't think anyone can have a legit gripe with the defense so far. That's understanding the level of competition is going to increase and expecting similar results against the better offenses on our schedule is not realistic.

I posted in the FSU / Clemson thread you must keep Travis in the pocket or force him out left towards the sideline. That’s the key. Cut the field in half and force throws across his body. Clemson did that in the second half and they scored zero points until OT. If you sit back JT will eat you up running and passing. Pressure is a must.
I said something similar in another thread! Keep Travis in the pocket and we limit the damage he can do!

Do the same stats at the same level not equal the same thing. At the college level the production is what matters as far as right now is concerned.

The pass rush gets pressure on the QB just about every time he goes back to throw. Yes there is a lot of room for improvement but our pass rush is way more effective against other teams than they’re pass rush is against our Offense.

The death of the pass defense has been greatly exaggerated

We're #3 in the rush defense rankings as well. I think some of the criticisms of the defense has been overstated a bit. Everybody accumulates yards nowadays, and it feels like fewer and fewer defenses play aggressive man schemes and are more content to let teams dink and dunk their way into the red zone where they either force turnovers in the compressed space or hold teams to 3 points. But you just can't give up big chunk plays and explosive tds and survive now

Perfect. SDE with Bain/Mesidor (if healthy) should be able to do that- force gim left.

You can’t help yourself, can you?
Why is there a problem with pointing out both good and bad on this board?

We are 4-0, rolling, winning handily, but there is opportunity for improvement in multiple areas. Not sure why we cannot take a break from Deion and being Buffhurt to discuss some of the things that could catch us against better teams on the upcoming schedule.

Sorry if it’s been posted

For as bad as our teams were the last 10 years. We've been spoiled at Defensive End. J-Jackson, Garvin, GR, Phillips, Roche have all played NFL Snaps.

Harvey and Chantz were consensus 4 stars and are now upperclassmen who haven't progressed the same way. Mesidor and Kelly have been hurt so it's not fair to grade them at this point.

The last two weeks our most disruptive player off the edge has been Bain. Speaks to his immense skill level but it's not a good look for the more experienced guys.

I didn’t say there is a problem with pointing out our weaknesses. It’s a good point for discussion. There are varying opinions and interpretations based on certain posters’ experience and knowledge. It’s a useful thread whether one agrees with OP’s premise or not, because it engenders discussion of our defensive strategies.

That wasn’t the gist of my response to you.

I am 1000% convinced that many people only understand the sack statistic and nothing else

We also blitz but not in a way where we are constantly bringing 6,7 guys

We are still pressuring with 4 and 5 mostly and confusing the QB because Guidry realizes what we lack

It’s called fkn coaching
