The money has gotten obscene in college athletics

It’s be easier to argue that education is fair compensation when players have other means of making some cash.

Obviously the boosters at the larger schools will leverage this rule to recruit, but they already are.

I think the likeness thing is overblown since so few players are actually in demand.

Socialist screed aside, what may happen if paying players becomes reality? If athletes are going to be paid, who chooses which players get paid? The fair market? How much? Football players get more than field hockey? Does a "basketball" school pay more for basketball players than a "football" school does? Do women get the same stipend as men? Title IV won't just go away. How many sports teams will be discontinued due to the lack of funding at smaller schools? Olympic sports get the same pay as the money makers? Of course none of this will trickle down to the high school level. It already has but at least it has been shunned and has repercussions (if caught). What happens to penalties if there are no scholarship reductions anymore? Current players pay for past players "crimes" by forfeiture or post season bans? I could go on.

The current system? Corrupt, no question. Is it fair to the players? I think so. They're not forced into anything. They get benefits beyond what any of us regular schulbs got in college. I worked my way through school and then paid back my loans. The cost of school has skyrocketed. If you want to talk about propping up something with tax dollars and policy you should focus there. But that's a discussion for an off-topic thread.

Tio, the revolution happened over 60 years ago, maybe it's time to give the labels a rest? This isn't a conversation about Title IX, fixing the broken system, or your humble brag about how you spent 7 years at FIU getting a double major in Communications and Spanish while working at Pollo Tropical.

College athletics are shaped and organized by the tax statutes that govern them and Universities are pushing back because they know that their gravy train is under attack.

You understand that that Universities enter into joint ventures with for-profit businesses to generate revenue, right? You must understand that the revenue paid to say ESPN or Addidas ends up on their balance sheet, right? You also understand that players can't make money off of their likeness right? You also understand that university employees are getting paid bloated salaries to (mis)manage athletic departments, right? (See Blarke Jarmes).

There is a simple fix to this problem. Drop the charade of student-athletics and let the professional leagues build out academies and minor leagues. The least amount of regulation, oversight, and subsidy. Capitalism at its finest.

See, people have to be realistic about this stuff. Miami fans won't go to an actual game that they could attend for $6. You think they're going to show up and pay for an autograph from a guy whose own position coach doesn't know his name?

Doesn’t matter if they do or don’t. There’s the opportunity for these kids to make some money.

Will people show up for an autograph session? Maybe. I’m much more confident tho that maroone Ford would get the OL together for a commercial for F150s or something.

It’d be cheap from the advertisers perspective... plus, they already have commercials on during games. Having players involved would be a no brainer.

He’s set up games against Notre Dame, LSU, the Turds, Michigan State, Texas a&m and Bama.

Not sure how much more you want him to do.
 
None of this matters. When push comes to shove, the big boys are going to take their ball and their money and make their own rules. The fact that billion dollar programs are operating under the same rules and circumstances as tiny programs who hemorrhage money is a joke. The ~50 or so money makers will leave the NCAA and pay whoever they want whatever they want.

It matters when the Ford dealerships in Birmingham and Austin pay $25,000 per player.
