The good old days at UM - 1992

6 home games, 5 away games. Hurricane Andrew year.

Ranked Iowa away - 24-7 win
Ranked Pedo St away - 17-14 win
Ranked Syracuse away - 16-10 win (in November)

Ranked F$U rivalry at home - 19-16 win
Arizona disaster at home - 8-7 win

And 4 of the 5 games listed above came in our first 5 games over a 5 week span. Brutal way to open the season post-Andrew.

The other 6 games, we scored between 35 and 63 points per game.
I was fortunate to be at the PSU and Syracuse games. I was an away-game guy back then.

Statistically, we were good on O.
12th in total offense and 9th in total offense.

Tough schedule agree, especially under those circumstances... although Iowa and Penn state didn't finish out the year too well.
Not many know this but Arizona had the #1 scoring D that year. Bama was #2 (1st in total D), FSU #13 and Syracuse in the top-25.
So, we weren't going against slouches.

Maybe the Walsh/Erikson years spoiled me.
Those 4 years when we had either of those guys starting, we scored 20, or less, just once.
They scored on everybody.
In Vinnie's two years, we were held under 20 only twice (once per)...and we know what those two games were.
You have to go back to the Bernie years where we were held to less than 20 more than once.

I've often wondered about the 1985 season, what the AP and UPI voters would have done. Very possibly a split national championship.

On the Coaches/UPI side, Miami was #4. But Pedo State was #1 and Oklahoma was #2, so it was a perfect situation for "winner gets my vote" coaches to make Oklahoma the champs.

On the Writers/AP side, Miami was #2 and Oklahoma was #3. BUT, and this is key, Miami had beaten Oklahoma head-to-head during the year. And Miami's sole loss was to Florida in the first week of the season. Florida was #5 in the pre-season, they were #6 going into the bowls, and they were #5 after the bowls. HOWEVER, since Florida was on probation, they could not be SEC champs, they could not be ranked in UPI, and they could not go to a bowl game. What they COULD point to was the AP ranking, and they were essentially a Top 5 team.

So it would have been interesting to see what AP did. Do you reward Oklahoma (#3 pre-bowl) for beating #1 in the bowl? Or do you reward Miami (#2 pre-bowl) for beating Oklahoma head-to-head, even though Miami lost in Week 1 to a Top 5 (but on probation) team?

Fortunately for the AP voters, Miami lost and they didn't have to face this conundrum.

0:35- 3:50
Probably would have been a split.
Miami AP, OU, undeservedly, Coaches.

It wasn't to be.
At least we didn't have T-shirts made up that said Miami Hurricanes 27- National Champions 14...
like some other sappy team did 2 years prior.

And then 4 years later, there was the "F$U 24 - National Champions 10" t-shirt...

Wide Right II was as an absolute war. You young thundercats need to put down the video game control for a second and watch what it was like when this rivalry was tops in the sport.

I just watched this inwas 4 years old when they played lol man what a game! 236 pound oline man! Mario out there! Lamar Thomas was special. My favorite moment was the Pat Riley Sack and then Barrow laying out the WR on the wr screen! And of the course the announcer Wide Right!

Not sure about that but all those polos and coats from the 90’s are pretty amazing. My fave is still my Nike “puffy coat” with the giant U IMG_1456.jpeg

That hit by Barrow on Vanover… this is one of the few plays I enjoy watching the replay just as much as I did being there.

*Keith Jackson & Bob Griese
*Barrow just gets up like on to the next
*Then they do the telestrator diagram
*Crowd is going ape ****
*Cameos by Dexter Siegler, Terris Harris, Darrin Harris, Patrick Riley, Darren Krien
*The Rohan Marley salute
*Then Barrow realizes and gets pumped, then crowd goes even more ape ****

Yeah they controlled our OLine. UM looked a step behind and a step slow that entire game. Under prepared IMO for a very prepared opponent.
What I remembered of that team's offense, every time we played a rag tag teams, we would 50 on them, when we played a prime-time team, the defense had to play out of their minds. That was late into Erickson's tenure, and you could see our roster was being diluted of top talent.
