The Baker haters are gonna love this

Yeah just because he may have ppl looking at him doesn’t make him a good coach. He had way too much dumbfounding moments last year. Maybe it’s the jump in talent that he’s going against idk. At this point, he wouldn’t be a loss
I'm not saying you're wrong, but I will say that there is NO college defense I look at and don't see a ton of dumbfounding moments.

The top teams, with the top defenses still had to have great offensive play to overcome all those dumbfounding defensive lapses. Rarely, even for them that wasn't enough.

I haven't thought of it as dumbfounding coaching myself. I think if it as great moments by the other teams' offense due to their scheme, motion and execution.

Would prefer to have an older, wiser staff on defense.

It's Stroud and a bunch of guys who still watch cartoons on Saturday morning.

I really can't stand the "offense sucks so it's okay for our defense to give up scores" logic.

Good defenses step up to the plate.
There's no rule that says your defense HAS to give up scores if your offense is having a bad day.

Offensive struggles never stopped our great defenses from pitching shut-outs (or low scoring games).
Even as recently as the Shannon years, our defense would be on the field all **** day and stand-up to the challenge better than these Diaz/Baker era units. Pretty sure we beat somebody (USF?) with a score of 6-3 one season...with a much less talented roster than we've had lately.
this is correct, but what does occur when you have kids, when you have a culture that is worn down and when you have poor coaching is that when one side of the ball struggles the other one tends to do so after a while also.

I'd rather have great young coaching minds that are very attack oriented to go along with the local schools type of athletes and their mindsets.

Who recruit great attacking defensive tackles (like Taylor) to go along with our amazing defensive ends. And use that defensive front four to put intense pressure on the QB and running game--- and use the blitz every so often for added scariness for the opposing team.

To add to my fantasy, I'd also like to have 22 NFL ready top 100 draft picks on the defensive 2 deep, of course--- and a young Bill Belechek (sp?) clone to join the staff.

Definitely don't disagree with that.

The defense was better statistically and as a unit when Diaz was the DC. Baker hasn’t yet proven he is an elite DC. Last year Manny had to become more involved especially after the NC 4 and 17. Also Baker is co-DC and doesn’t yet have full reign of the defense.

Also, the idea that the defense was good because the schedule was weak makes no sense. First of all, every single team in the country pads their stats against weaker opponents. Secondly, the defense had some of their best games against the best teams they played. Virginia and Florida were the two best teams they played and they did a great job against both of them. If anything, they got lackadaisical and sloppy against bad teams. Only one team surpassed 400 yards against them but they just gave up too many drives against crappy teams like Duke, FIU and Georgia Tech. Although by the end of the season I think the Defense was just tired of it and kind of called it a season.
Florida’s Offense was 45th in the country in total Offense. Virginia was ranked 81th. Weak arguments. Miami literally only played 2 teams in the regular season in the top 25, Louisville and UNC. Want to watch those tapes again and see how they did?

Obviously, every team pads their stats with garbage opponents; however, we play in the ******* coastal! Miami in any other conference isn’t getting those numbers we get in the Coastal and it’s not close. Stop the nonsense.

Well Louisville was the only team that cracked 400 yards against them the entire season. Although Miami jumped all over them from the start so giving up 400 yards didn’t really impact the game. They also held UNC almost 100 yards below their season average

Bama gave up 48 points to the #64th ranked Auburn offense, 23 points to the 96th ranked South Carolina offense, 28 points to the 72nd ranked Texas A&M offense and 46 to #1 LSU.

How'd they look on film those weeks? Wanna watch the film? How does our **** game compare now?

Give it a rest man.

Perhaps, it didn’t impact the game but disproves the theory that our Defense only struggles when the Offense cant stay on the field. The VT game is the biggest embarrassment of them all how Fuente exposed Baker and forced Diaz to step in for him. Our D vs. UNC was terrible the 1st Quarter and choked in the 4th. Our Offense played good enough to win those games. ****, the D got teabagged by FIU in the 4th too just when we rallied back. No elite D allows that to happen.

This stupidity doesn’t deserve a response. Holy ****..

Pretty sure aub forced some turnovers on the young qb and even had 2 pick to the house..

Why because it doesn't fit with your every day narrative of screaming we're in the coastal man, disregarding what other teams do against similar competition then deciding any response contrary to yours is dumb?

And we turned it over 4 or 5 consecutive possessions to start the VT and FIU games, gave up two TDs via a fake punt and end zone sack to GT and had countless game deciding missed FGs and PATs against multiple opponents last season.

The same crew yells excuses at those things when anyone mentions them.

The jury is still out on Baker...

I'm willing to give him this season & see what he does before I grab the pitchfork.

This season in particular Coaches/coordinators gonna really have to earn their money because of lack of reps in Spring & the circumstances surrounding the season as a whole.

There also won't be any easy OOC games where you can pad stats, we're playing All-ACC offenses this year & none will be pushovers. If Baker can make those adjustments & dial back the unnecessary overly exotic Blitzes & he can catapult this Defense into a top 5-10 status. It just boils down to what the overall philosophy for the season will be.

We'll find out quick with the UAB game, because while they are a good Defensive team, their offense is trash & their QB is a subpar 59% passer who threw 15INT's last year & their OL & run game is weak as well, we should be able to shut them down & bring heavy pressure with our pass rush pretty easily & force turnovers vs them.

The most difficult offensive matchups we'll face will be Clemson, LVille, Wake Forest & GTech.

You must have missed my posts in this thread where I mentioned that the defense had too many lapses against bad teams.
I must have missed where I said the defense was elite.

And another thing I hope we start doing more of is disguising coverage.

We rarely ever show Blitz but drop back, we almost always run exactly what we show in pre-snap coverage & alignment, which leads to us often times being predictable & telegraphing our Blitz packages.

It's like if we gone get creative with the Blitzes at least mix up the sequences & throw offenses off rhythm, if you watch a game you can **** near almost count to a T exactly when & what down we're Blitzing on & who we're sending, we play it very straight forward to the point where if you're an offensive coach up in the booth you can map it out at halftime.

That was one of the things we missed last year, Diaz's (Miami) defenses always made adjustments & came out better prepared in the 2nd half win, lose or draw, Baker's Defense seemed to just keep riding the bike in quicksand.

He's gonna have to improve on that if he wants to succeed here.

Definitely don't disagree with that.
I have never been a huge manny fan but I have seen some good um dc’s get huge points dropped on them. Manny is very good at making adjustments but something is off wifh the preparation because we tend to fall behind early

But but but Baker is one of the best up and coming DCs!

Anyone who believed that **** and defended him in this thread is a clown and knows nothing about football.
