Miami's Blake Baker a coordinator to watch per Bruce Feldman
The defensive player caller directed a group that ranked in the Top 10 nationally last season when it came to sacks and tackles for loss.247sports.com
He still needs to redeem himself in my mind after calling that blitz against on UNC 4th and 16
Exactly! Just win. UNC has an elite offense. They’re going to score points but as long as we score more I’m happy.I am happy if we concede less points than UNC.
that's fine, but does that mean pre-veto, bakers playcalling is completely autonomous?Manny is on the headset and has veto power over all plays. That’s how it’s always been. So anything Blake called earlier in the season, manny approved.
So basically you're saying he's a good coach because he does well against crappy team but not against good offense. Got it.I get Baker is everyone's scapegoat but if we are honest, the defense has played pretty good this season except Clemson, Louisville and NC St.
Offense has had some bad games as well.
I also notice, Since NC ST. the D-line attacks the LOS more often.I don’t disagree with what u said about Manny on da headset. But credible peeps on here have said Manny TOOK OVER play calling in the second half of NC State (where we finally shut down the NC State offense that was doing anything they wanted all first half. So if Baker isn’t calling the defense during any part of the game how can we give him credit or blast him? The only thing u can do at that point is relieve him of duties at the end of the year or demote him.
However maybe those usual credible posters were wrong and Baker be da man and he’s had an epic defensive adjustment since getting carved up in multiple games including the first 2-3 quarters of the NC State game
I'm saying the defense has played on the same level as the offense yet only one side of the ball gets all the hate.So basically you're saying he's a good coach because he does well against crappy team but not against good offense. Got it.
It sounds an awful lot like you're talking about the nuances between being a competent coordinator versus a very good/elite coordinator. As for Baker...
I don't hate him at all, I think he's an overall good coordinator, however there's things he does as a play caller I'm not too crazy about either. I think he sells out too much in trying to be too heavy handed in racking up the TFL stats that he leaves glaring holes open in the middle of the field & puts our Safety group at a disadvantage sometimes because they get left with the responsibility to cover **** near 3 different levels of the field & have to make split second decisions on which deep third, flat curl or hole to cover & there always seems to be some confusion about which coverage shells they're all in.
There's some slight adjustments we could make that I think could take us from being a top 15 Defense to be a top 5 Defense, it's just a matter of shifting the philosophy a bit from focusing so hard on just trying to create 3rd & longs, but rather using our strengths in personnel packages that make us stronger in coverage on down & distance & forces offenses to have to actually respect our secondary.
Idk if it's all on Baker being that he's only been here for a season, part of me thinks he kinda has to placate towards the way Diaz wants to run the defense & he is his protege, but even so still if he has autonomy on play calling duties he should really dial back some of the overly exotic Blitzes & let our LB's drop back in coverage more.
We made a judgement on Enos in one year.1 year is way too early to make any judgment call. But last year was nothing noteworthy. Those season ending statistics get greatly skewed by playing some awful competition.
When you're playing a trailing technique you can't turn your head. What was wrong with our DBs in that bowl game against Wisconsin when they could never turn their heads to see the ball?
is this dIAZ or baker.....it applies to bothSo basically you're saying he's a good coach because he does well against crappy team but not against good offense. Got it.
When you're playing off the receiver, flat footed, while the WR is going into his route full speed, you're forced into playing a trailing technique where you have to play for the hands to disrupt the pass. I noticed the last game, the CBs were playing more press coverage where they were "in phase" with the WR and can turn their heads and make a play for the ball.I'm on the fence with him I guess. I'm aware it was his first year but his play calling left a lot to be desired. Opposition's success rate on 3rd and 4th down was very alarming. The way he teachers our corners to play "eyes and hands" is another obvious change from Manny's philosophy in "playing the ball". And yes I put that on Baker instead of Rumph he takes orders from the D.C. and we never seen our corners play the ball that way in Diaz's defensive scheme. I don't know bout y'all but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if he stopped those delayed safety blitzes every few plays.
Enos did ****** against good and bad teams alike. Players or people in general seemed to dislike him as a human being as well.We made a judgement on Enos in one year.
That's not the point. The point is you can make a decision after one year. It depends on how egregious it is.Enos did ****** against good and bad teams alike. Players or people in general seemed to dislike him as a human being as well.

One of the best sports books written. They should make a film or series on it.
The way it was explained... yes, baker has autonomy. Manny takes part in game planning, but that’s not unusual. Who knows how often manny changes the play tho?that's fine, but does that mean pre-veto, bakers playcalling is completely autonomous?
