The Baker haters are gonna love this

I'm on the fence with him I guess. I'm aware it was his first year but his play calling left a lot to be desired. Opposition's success rate on 3rd and 4th down was very alarming. The way he teachers our corners to play "eyes and hands" is another obvious change from Manny's philosophy in "playing the ball". And yes I put that on Baker instead of Rumph he takes orders from the D.C. and we never seen our corners play the ball that way in Diaz's defensive scheme. I don't know bout y'all but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if he stopped those delayed safety blitzes every few plays.

****, only at Miami do players leave early to be drafted in the 5th round and coaches who go 6-7 are put on watch lists.

:pgdead:

What happened to winning first?

Disappointing article by Bruce. Baker is living off the foundation Diaz created and is getting credit for it. Anyone who paid attention to last season would know our Defense regressed in several areas and was able to hide many of their flaws behind a weak schedule and ****** Offense. Díaz literally stepped in for the clown to fix the Defense at one point. Miami won’t be elite under Baker. The big boys will run circles around him.

iN 1957 LSU had two great college running backs. Jim Taylor and Billy Cannon. Rare a school has 2 that good on same team.Canes did have 3 once. Portis, McGahee and Gore. no I am not old. Just ancient
I remember Cannon at LSU when we played them. Big and fast.

Taylor was the heart and soul of some great Packers championship teams.

Did we ever have the three you mentioned plus Najeh Davenport?

What was wrong with our DBs in that bowl game against Wisconsin when they could never turn their heads to see the ball?

I don't understand how a guy who had to have the head coach literally say he was gonna step in and take control can be on such a list?

the defense had gotten on diaz nerves so bad at just the mid way point of the season that he started to take back control. Then he stupidly gave it back to baker and we started to look like turds again. Tell me you guys didn't watch the same fsu game I did where we looked like 2018 defense again? Then you skip ahead a few games and it's like, oh yeah here's baker back in control

let's take a 15 sack guy in 6 games and send him in to coverage too

how about we just play contain against florida all game, instead of actually getting in the face of their quarterback?

I can't stand the guy so ignore me, but I cannot stand what I watched last season. Rushing 3, safety blitzes that took 7 seconds to hit, dropping gr15 into coverage, all sorts of missed tackles

dude absolutely f'n sucks until proven otherwise.

He's going to be fine.

As some have stated, he may have over schemed early last season. But if I had to bet, this defense won't cost us a game this year.

Exactly. He’s a knock off version of Manny. He’s learned everything he knows from Manny and it’s clear he’s just trying to emulate him, and failing.

Last year was probably our worst defense since that 4 game losing streak in 2016.

Yes! Except Manny had quite a bit more experience when he came to Miami. Baker had a short stint at DC at LaTech but other than that I don’t think he has any other DC experience. That’s not enough experience to be a DC at Miami IMO

You have to call a defense at Louisiana Tech differently than you would at Miami. Baker doesn’t need to out scheme his opponents here. He’s got horses he never had before. I like the basic concepts of Manny’s defense and the theory behind what they do. They just don’t need to overcompensate so much. They don’t need to gamble nearly as much to cause havoc here and I hope Baker has picked up on that.
Well said

"There's some slight adjustments we could make that I think could take us from being a top 15 Defense to be a top 5 Defense, it's just a matter of shifting the philosophy a bit from focusing so hard on just trying to create 3rd & longs, but rather using our strengths in personnel packages that make us stronger in coverage on down & distance & forces offenses to have to actually respect our secondary."

@Liberty City El

This says it all. To me the above is at the crux of my exasperation with Baker. I do understand that most likely the jump in talent and coaching at the P5 level caught him a bit flat footed. Even so it is extremely frustrating to watch him make us vulnerable in the secondary because his primary focus seems to be creating TFLs. If he would just shift his focus from TFLs to holding the opponent to a 3 and out ie. getting off the field, our havoc stats would fall a bit but our defense overall would be stingier and much more efficient.

Baker has one of the best DLs in the country. He doesn't need to blitz so often. The delayed blitzes must go altogether along with that ridiculous 3 man front on 3rd and long. It's interesting to note that Diaz had the exact same type of issues in his first year here but Diaz adjusted in year 2 so there is reason to be optimistic that Baker will follow a similar pattern in his second year with Diaz there to guide him.

Baker is a fraud and will be exposed this season. Even with an elite d line, his name will be torched on here come half way through the season. Many of you fans had given him a pass last year but I know in year two you will be after his head.
