The Baker haters are gonna love this

After giving up 31 points to FIU and having a defense that produced zero sacks that game, I heard the NFL came calling too. Baker is soooo on the rise. Everyone wants to know how he gets his kids to blitz so well from 18 yards out.

Lu, you said EXACTLY what I was going to say. When I read LCE's critique of Baker my first thought was that's exactly what we were saying about Manny after year one as DC. Interested in seeing how Baker's year two goes.

Guy's a bum, has no business in that position. Unfortunately, Manny's ego won't let him hire someone who won't implement his same ****ty scheme.

imo Baker could have gone after last season but Manny had bigger fish to fry. Enos was the bigger problem and had to ****** GO! I don't think you can replace both coordinators in the first year without making yourself look bad. So, I'm looking for Baker to be replaced in the next couple of years unless he suddenly gets a lot better. I get that a defense can get gassed if the offense just plain sucks but.. Miami was 78th in first quarter points allowed against a ****** schedule. That is not good.

Also, the idea that the defense was good because the schedule was weak makes no sense. First of all, every single team in the country pads their stats against weaker opponents. Secondly, the defense had some of their best games against the best teams they played. Virginia and Florida were the two best teams they played and they did a great job against both of them. If anything, they got lackadaisical and sloppy against bad teams. Only one team surpassed 400 yards against them but they just gave up too many drives against crappy teams like Duke, FIU and Georgia Tech. Although by the end of the season I think the Defense was just tired of it and kind of called it a season.

I dont mind the stunts, it's those long developing blitzes that the QB's seem to pick up from about 15 yards away
Naw, we stunt entirely too much. We even stunt on downs and distances that call for a run play. And when the run comes, we have stunted ourselves right out of gap integrity. If u watch the film from last season, you will see that most of the long runs we gave up were due to our stunts.

Look at that guy sprinting from 15 yards out, I wonder what he could possibly be up to.

I’m a fan of baker, aside from Manny, he’s the best d coordinator that we’ve had here in a long time. However, in terms of head coaching material, I think Banda has more potential in that department.

I though much of the same until I saw the NCAA stats for time of possession. Miami came in at exactly 30 minutes (Lashlee's SMU team was lower 28 minutes). Thirty minutes is not enough to physically tired them out. I feel they were more mentally gassed, 78th in first quarter points, playing from behind every game. You could see it wore on them.

I think we might be saying the same thing? I'm thinking the 'offense sucks" caused the defense to not do as well as they should have isn't a valid excuse for the defense. We can't use the 'spent the whole game on the field' excuse when we're giving up tons of points in the first quarter. First quarter and 4th quarter Miami ranks in the 70's for points allowed. 2nd and 3rd quarter Miami was ranked top 10. I'll give them gassed in the 4th because of the offense but there's no excuse for the 1st quarter. Seems like good adjustments but bad initial plans.

I really can't stand the "offense sucks so it's okay for our defense to give up scores" logic.

Good defenses step up to the plate.
There's no rule that says your defense HAS to give up scores if your offense is having a bad day.

Offensive struggles never stopped our great defenses from pitching shut-outs (or low scoring games).
Even as recently as the Shannon years, our defense would be on the field all **** day and stand-up to the challenge better than these Diaz/Baker era units. Pretty sure we beat somebody (USF?) with a score of 6-3 one season...with a much less talented roster than we've had lately.
