Teams losing fans.

Notice that all are professional teams. Several factors I've noticed.
1. From the listing the areas with poor economies seem hit hard.
2. I think John Q. Public is fed up with politics and sports. Why I think our moderators should stop the political discussions here. There are other forums for that or add a political forum here separate from Hurricane sports. They have become the most vicious attack wise.
3. Lack of loyalty of the athletes, especially in basketball where players like Lebron builds a team around himself where ever he wants to go. Also baseball, I cannot picture a Mickey Mantle as anything but a New York Yankee.
4. I hope the college portal does not become like free agency and hurt college sports even though we benefited from it I am not in favor of it.

College sports are hurt by some "schools" being allowed to cheat in recruiting, and every other area possible. The portal, while bothersome, isn't nearly the problem buying recruits is. If anything, it helps level the playing field.
College football is beginning to resemble the NFL. The only difference is in CFB you have TWO teams that cheat like crazy and win every year, whereas the NFL has ONE team that cheats like crazy and wins every year. No one else has much of a chance to be anything but an also-ran. It's boring as ****. No wonder no one watches these two farces anymore. The game has been ruined except for some rednecks in the Deep South and a bunch of drunken Irishmen. and rich Ivy Leaguers in New England.

Notice that all are professional teams. Several factors I've noticed.
1. From the listing the areas with poor economies seem hit hard. Of course, valid point. I'll add the decrease to less expendable income, middle class having to burden a larger tax share after corporate/wealthy welfare socialism tax cuts.
2. I think John Q. Public is fed up with politics and sports. Why I think our moderators should stop the political discussions here. There are other forums for that or add a political forum here separate from Hurricane sports. They have become the most vicious attack wise. True but impossible to separate race and politics from sports. Can't express yourself unless being labeled un-American by one side.
3. Lack of loyalty of the athletes, especially in basketball where players like Lebron builds a team around himself where ever he wants to go. Also baseball, I cannot picture a Mickey Mantle as anything but a New York Yankee. Your Mikey Mantle came from era that was not great and nostalgic to all and I have zero respect for accomplishments (not the person) pre-integration. Bet you'll have a problem with your employer prohibiting you from working at another place. Give me 10 mil less and guarantee me a super bowl and I'll turn it down for 10 mil more. I'm a business man and profits reign supreme.
4. I hope the college portal does not become like free agency and hurt college sports even though we benefited from it I am not in favor of it. I can see a restriction of how many any one school can pickup, but hard for me to side with a corrupt and oppressive organizations like the NCAA and Institutions that already fund and violate the rules. A kid on a full ride Academic Scholarship can change schools with no restrictions. So can coaches. Athletes not only bring in more money for the schools, but earn it will all the training, practice, off season work and public service hours as well. Maybe in the pass there was a valid argument for scholarship equals education costs, but the financial boom and facilities spending has invalidated that argument.

Teams are going to have to make it more than just the game to keep butts in seats. Some teams are doing more than others. For example, Liv was a cool idea but it could be so much better. I’d like to see a 5-6 course meal by a celebrity chef offered at Liv. Actually have waiters serve you a gourmet meal at your seat. Then it makes more sense to blow an extra $150-200 per person. That’s how you make preseason or tune up games more interesting to the masses with disposable income.

1. Tickets are expensive. I have 2 kids and I'm not sure they have the attention span to sit through the whole thing.
2. Traffic. Its not fun getting in/out.
3. I have a nice tv at home that I can pause to get a drink, snack, or take a leak without missing a single thing.
4. I would gladly pay $100 for streamed Canes games with multiple camera angles, stats, etc.

THIS!!

All without paying for parking; paying 10X the actual price for drinks & snacks; selective controlled entry& seating; no waiting in line for the urinals; and no one popping up & blocking my view at inopportune times; all in the most comfortable chair in the house.

It's like having a specially designed skybox without the exorbitant price

#1 has some minor relevance as to the size of the impact, but #2 is an idiotic reason, and #3/#4 are ridiculous and been fairly disproven.

There are 2 factors, and 2 factors alone that make up the cause:

1. Live attendance (tickets, food, parking, etc.) has become exceedingly expensive and a hassle that increasing numbers do not want to put up with (traffic, limits on tailgating, weather, costs, etc.).
2. Home viewing has become better and better (huge screen HDTV, more availability of games via Sunday Ticket and other cable channels or premium packages, etc.).

It's totally the expense, and the fact that simply viewing at home is so good.

I will keep going to games, as I want to support the team, and I enjoy the social aspect of tailgating - but let's be honest here, from a pure viewing experience, comfort and perhaps most importantly convenience standpoint, you could give me a suite on the 50 yard line at Hard Rock and it still wouldn't be as nice as viewing at home. You can do other things all day, all the way up until 3:29 for that 3:30PM kickoff, then plop down while wearing whatever, drink/eat whatever you want, then turn TV off after and immediately do something else if you want.

Leisure time companies are dropping their efforts to attract lower income clientele in exchange for maximizing their dollars from the wealthy. If you look around the sports world, arenas and stadiums are downsizing in capacity but going overboard with amenities. Look what Stephen Ross did with Hard Rock stadium. he literally eliminated almost 10,000 seats (from the cheapest sections) so he could up the amenities and charge more for the remaining 65,000 seats. One of the main reasons UM wanted out of the Orange Bowl was the lack of luxury suites. The overall atmosphere at the stadium is 100% better than it was but it also costs me a **** of a lot more for tickets, parking and concessions.

I've got lots of friends in the boating industry and it's the same there too. Instead of focusing on popping out a bunch of 20 footers and selling them for a reasonable price, they make 1 35 footer, load it to the gills and sell it for half a million. There's not as much disposable income in the middle class as there used to be so companies have to cater to the wealthy if they want to make money.

What's going to "kill" college football is lack of parity & uneven playing field.

Fans outside of the old South are getting real sick & tired of Bama vs Clemson every **** year.

The NCAA better wake up & start letting some other teams eat, cause eventually the TV ratings along with the ticket sales will drop drastically if fans around the country believe this thing is just a 2 team invitational every year.

People will stop watching if they think they're going to see the same thing over & over again. The powers that be need to realize the rest of the nation has had enough of Bama & Clemson, time to let some new programs into the cabal.

OP is confusing fans with attendance. Attendance is down across the board for a number of reasons, many which were already discussed here.

That being said, those who have a better viewing experience watching a game on TV over Hard Rock Stadium just aren’t doing it right. If it’s a financial decision, I can understand that, otherwise y’all clearly never been to my tailgate or my section.

I agree, I should've said attendees not fans. The excuse about watching on TV is only valid if it is too costly or inconvenient to attend because I DVR every game that is broadcast of our Canes (All Cane Sports) that are telecast and enjoy watching after and even for years after. When my kids were young the U had an end zone pass for 100 dollars a year and got 2 adults and 3 children admission. The end zone was and still is the wildest seats in the stadium. Of course in the old OB you had access to other seats unless it was a hyped game so we would try different views throughout the OB. Now that my children are grown it is reminiscent to go together, being a bonding moment of joy. I still believe that loyalty being remiss is a big factor, especially in the NBA. Was the Heat happy when James left? Did attendance drop like a rock, what will happen in Toronto since they slowly built a team and will be one and done. How important is it that our ex players are so fond and loyal to the U even though they bounce from team to team for the big bucks. I am sure many here follow our alum and watch them play as Ex-Canes, not Ravens or such. Loyalty is a factor for many. I like the idea that Ray Lewis stayed his career with the Ravens, shows character.

Fitzgerald from Northwestern nails it IMO...

I agree, this is a big part of it.

But the conversation needs to be completely reframed imo. Technology, specifically smart phones and tablets, are not going away. It's counterproductive to vilify it the way Pat Fitzgerald, as well as most other commentators that share his viewpoint, do. Smart phones are incredible innovations that have improved the global standard of living. We are early on in their history and are therefore still figuring out how to use them. I think people in 20 or 30 years will use them differently than we do today - but not less.

He would've made a more compelling point had he talked about building good habits around how and when to use your smartphone, how old industries (like live sports) can adapt given today's usage patterns, etc. Abstinence - be it in terms of ***, drugs, or smart phones - is rarely the right solution.

Enact a college entry draft based on a schools previous years record?
Have a cap on what a school pays incoming players?
Have a salary cap on the coaching staff?

When I was younger I wouldn't miss a game at the OB (23 season tickets) and at JRS attended numerous Canes games. But the spouse has health issues and JRS being so far away has changed it for us. But there's nothing like being there... however, all those factors you bring up are valid. Now with 65" high definition TVs and the comforts of home it's another thing. My first large screen TV (50") was in 2000, a projection and it was not high def and the viewing angle was an issue. Also I remember going to the games drinking beer like a fish and being in the **** line forever, then hearing a roar and saying fvck I missed what happened. Plus parking headaches, the prices, the azzholes looking for a fight, drunks, farting fans, puking fans, the heat, the rain, the long drive to JRS, etc, etc. well it's something to consider.
Do whatever works for you but for Gods sake don't miss a Canes game... ever!
