Take the ball or kick off in the swamp?

Definitely leaning to get ball. We are better than them at every position with the ball. Top qb, top rb, wr(3, and not one team matches there past production, te, and a smash mouth offensive line.

If we do not return the opening kick, then smash it down their throats!
Just saying that iconic Devin Hester kick return can’t happen if you don’t get the ball first…

But again I totally get the other side too. It could be that I’m a control freak and am ready to bodyslam my couch already and I just want to embarrass them but maybe that’s a “me” thing

Something for sure demoralizing about a crowd being hype, getting the ball, and going 3 and out at home too

Take the ball. Score early, quiet the crowd, get a stop/turnover, rinse, repeat.

45-13 Canes.

He knows that. We’re going to have to do the opposite of his opposite. Maybe even the opposite of that.

I would go D first....
D is usually hyped up and ready to play before the O.
O has too many nuances that can be affected by new season jitters
Agreed. First game, first drive, hyped up situation, important rivalry game. That's a lot of jitters, and the offense typically requires more fine tuned operation to be successful. Given our front 7 advantage on D, they can set the tone and turn those Gators jitters into downright fear.

Listen to me. Sky/pooch kick and make them fair catch the opening kickoff of the season. This will take the air out of the stadium and get their fans all hot and bothered.

If we win the toss, as Warren Sapp would say
We will play defense
True story, he told Refs after winning coin toss, we’ll play defense instead of deferring. We kicked offf at the start of the game and at start second half to Washington.
Yup. I remember that game. It’s when the 58 game home win streak got snapped. Washington got the ball to start both halves because our captain didn’t understand the rules

I feel like this answer is really overrated lol it a a double edged sword. Cause you can come out at half and go 3 and out as well. I’d rather get the ball first and set the tone and have UF show their adjustments to us. If we stop them out of half we should roll
Would you want the ball 2nd in overtime in college, or first? If you get the ball 2nd in OT you have more information to go off of. And in the 3rd OT when you must go for 2pt conversion you know exactly what you need to respond with to end the game with a win. Now this is different from kick/receive because the possessions are guaranteed. So if possession are guaranteed more info is better. Thats what makes playing Defense first in college better. In the NFL we can see how this was different, because possessions were not guaranteed. Now that is a lot clearer than choosing to kick or receive to start a game cause ultimately we are talking like a 1% difference in statistical outcomes.

However logically there just is not really much debate that starting a half with the ball leads to more possessions on offense than your opponent in that half. No matter the result of your possession you basically always end the half with as many or more possessions than your opponent, unless you lose an onside kick essentially. And more possessions means more scoring opportunities. More scoring opportunities is more important in the 2nd half when you have more information and less time to reach your intended outcome. And this isn’t just important for when you are losing, it’s also important for when you are winning. The more information your opponent has (like say down 14 after half) the more aggressive they can be to get points. if they have more opportunities, it’s just better odds they come back.

You can’t predict whether you will come out and score on offense or whether you will stop them on defense. That’s why that shouldn’t even be factored in. What you CAN predict is you will have equal to or more possessions in the half you receive the ball, and equal to or less possessions than your opponent in the half when you kick. And you can also just generally say the less time and more information available, the more critical having more possessions is.

Always start with the D.

The D makes everything else happen.

The D is what keeps teams in line.

The D is how you keep a loud mouth crowd quiet.

The D gives opposing Coaches nightmares.

Give them the D!
