Syracuse WR Trebor Pena enters Portal

No doubt Pena would be a great addition, but are we just riding with what we have on the outside at this point? I think most assumed we’d add a starting caliber body there

How did the narrative here become an All ACC WR not being good enough for us? Do you guys think that J Smith or Ryan Williams are entering the portal?

Pena is immediately the best receiving option on the team. If the money is right, you absolutely take him.
I think the actual argument is that we want an outside WR, because that is the main need of the WR unit right now. Slot they love Toney, Idk why Trader couldn't be our starting slot, and Lofton will be split out plenty as well.

I think if Pena is the only WR in portal that is really good, I imagine we'll just go for him. Imbut the preference is getting a top outside WR.

This has happened the last couple seasons, the spring portal isnt really where you want to bank on getting impact players unless you back channeled someone heavy. I hope everyone remembers "the wave" reporters were talking about before that never happened. You better do your damage in that first portal window because the 2nd usually isnt as fruitful.
too think you n i have said this for over two years and ppl in miamis recruiting department havent caught on yet is crazy.

they thumb their nose up to some oslid wrs in the first portal. They did go all out on the top guys but i dont know how serious they could have been when they didnt have a qb in place...same sh*t happened last year with getting cam late.

Though they rebounded with getting sam brown in spring who was "ok".

I feel like you over pay in spring portal because when a big dog comes in they set their price more so becuase everyone is scrambling after them to fix their post spring holes.

Brown was pretty good on paper and honestly he didn't put up terrible numbers. He cost himself more than us with a few drops and denying himself a couple TDs by not husting to the endzone and giving those TDs to Fletcher ultimately. But at the time I think he was the top portal WR.

How much of that is a lack of urgency towards premium WR in the winter portal vs not having QB settled until spring portal?

We couldn't leverage Ward or Beck in either 1st portal window the last two seasons which led to a ton of question marks about who would be throwing these guys the ball. Throwing out a "trust me bro" doesn't mean jack to these kids.

If we had Ward or Beck locked up late December, our WR hauls would probably look vastly different. With that said, I do agree that our portal strategy primarily revolves around us tripping over our own d*mn feet half the time.

There just aren't any of those options in the portal at the moment

Correct, but rumors were someone would be entering. At this point, I will assume that’s not happening anymore or was never. Thought staff would have more of a plan there.

The staff can only do so much in that scenario, and it's never a whiff if they can't get Wr's to enter the portal. I'm not giving up on Mario quite yet because every time we start to doubt him, he proves us all wrong. I still think this roster (on paper) will be in very good shape by the time fall camp comes around

Was not having a qb a real problem? Singleton went to auburn and nobody knows who their qb will be. A&M has no passing game and landed guys. Don’t know why any wr would want to go to uga but they landed guys

who is auburn qb? They still got singleton

He's a poor man X.
X was a running back in the slot with good wiggle.

Pena is a slighter version of him with marginally better sped, but he runs routes very similarly.

This might be a case of taking him to bolster the WR corps if he comes on board, but I understand the numbers game, but he's an slightly above average CFB WR.

Like @DMoney is saying, lets see what happens, and if nothing happens then were rolling with youth at WR and a strong run game with play action style. We'll be fine either way. Just need to have a WR1 just to blast down there, stack the DB and get 7 on a go route.
I've been trying to compare and it's not super easy. The two offenses were structured a little differently (Though similar concepts pop up). That and Cam's love of extending plays combined with X's IQ (scramble drill) allowed X to catch on the move/in space a lot more than Pena, same with Tank Dell at Houston. I watched most of Pena's catches from last season and it was like 60-70% hook/curl/spacing with not a lot of run after catch potential. He does make a ton of strong-hands catches like X and can get open in a phone booth like X. Pena's got recorded athletic indicators that would lead you to believe he'd be at lease 1-2 tenths faster in the 40 than X which is not insignificant. I think a player that can replicate what you got from X (More so the version when TVD was QB) and also be more explosive is an exciting prospect.

Jackson Arnold signed with Auburn on December 14th. Eric Singleton signed with Auburn on December 23rd.

Arnold is still pretty unproven but he was a 5 star QB coming out of high school so still carries some clout. A lot more than Emory Williams did that's for sure.

Had Auburn not had Jackson Arnold would Singleton have still picked them?

Remember, this is free agency. Lots of things at play and several moving parts. Let the process play out. Miami is intent on landing an impactful WR, and they will either succeed or fail. We know what the goal is.
In your opinion do you think we end up succeeding or fail ? Lol

There is a reason D$ and others keep hinting at big time WR. If and that’s a big IF he hits the portal then i suspect it’ll be a domino effect with others that are public and not.

The staff is working. Let’s see if their plan works.

I don't disagree with that analysis. The speed thing, I just don't see it on film is all, X was short burst quickness with no long speed, Pena is somewhat comparable, but thinner.
I saw switch route, (i.e., ran sail from the slot and the corner form the slot) and it's similar.

I mean this guy will be competing with Ray Ray and Toney, my personnel thoughts are, he better not be asking for much and I don't wanna make the other two uncomfortable and leave.

Right now our starting 3 with JoJo, Toney/rayray, and CJ Daniels. I think Lofton is gonna break out.

Nothing is scary there, but we're gonna be running a 55/45 run vs pass, more under and play action then last year, ( all assumptions based on personnel) typically in that style of offense the slot isn't as valuable as your deep X and Z receivers, and going back to Lofton, he going to get a lot of looks as well in the passing game.

Use it for depth is the hope.
