Statistical Look at OSU Defense

Indiana scored 13 points.

However, they did have the best statistical game that OSU gave up all year. 5.96 a play. Indiana has a better offense than we do, however. But they did have some success down the field. They couldn’t run the ball for ****. If we can keep the ball away from Downs and win some 50/50 balls we might be able to generate explosives. That was the whole point of this….how do we generate enough explosives to beat them? If we think we can do it with 13 points like Indiana, that’d be great too. I don’t think that happens, however. I think we need to push 20 to win. Can we get there? And if we can, how? Nobody else has hit 17.
You think Indiana has a better defense than we do? I don’t.

None of those teams are Taint though. 8-4 was weak against the run, that was easy money. The stats told us they gave up 5 plus a carry against inside zone. Florida? Lulz, solid defense but no. ND would be the closest and they aren’t Taint. Plus we didn’t dominate: sure we ran for 135 but it was at 3.5 per clip.
I'm not here to debate those other teams because this comment is just not relevant to what we're talking about. All I'm saying is if Dawson goes out there trying to outwit and out-scheme Patricia, it will lead us down the road of turnover city. This game can't be a track meet, because OSU just has too many tows. I think playing cute and thinking we can out scheme OSU is a huge mistake. This needs to be a sluggish and sloppy game. We can still keep OSU on their toes by keeping the gameplan simple. However, we win this game by playing smash mouth football and putting the hammer too them in the run game. OSU really doesn't do well when people punch them in the mouth, which is why I think we have a chance. If there is a team that can win the line of scrimmage and physicality game, it's us

I only brought those other teams up because you used them as examples. Where we agree is that it does need to be a slow game but we do have to try and catch them off balance and that will require wit on the part of Dawson. Also, managing down and distance will not require Dawson to get cute but will call for him to be disciplined and take calculated shots. It’s how Indiana beat them. If we run into the teeth of this defense, I think it will be a boring night for our offense.

Could mean nothing but a huge caveat to their defensive stats in my opinion is that they haven’t exactly been severely tested. Holding indiana to 13 was impressive but in the regular season they played 1 top 30 scoring offense (Washington), 4 of their p4 opponents ranked in the 100s and 2 others ranked in the 80. Just something to consider when looking at their defensive stats.

Our offense isn’t great. Y’all keep saying they haven’t been tested but let’s not act like this offense has beeen lighting it up this year

I agree with what you're saying. This game is going to be a slugfest; we all know it. I fully expect this to be a very low-scoring game, which is perfectly fine by me. I'll bet on our line of scrimmage late in the game. I've watched almost every single OSU game in the Ryan Day era, and they are a physical team. However, when teams punch them in the mouth, they don't really respond well

Before A&M we were in the top 20 in scoring I believe. It’s not elite but it’s not bad like you’re insinuating. All I’m saying all this talk of them being a generational defense needs to be taken with a grain of salt

I think this game comes down to our defense. We must win the field position game and force Sayin into making bad decisions. Ideally, we can work with short fields, force a few three and outs, and turn them over. We will need as many possessions as possible.

If Beck plays like Superman that will be great too.

They have at least 4 first rounders. Don’t for a second think they aren’t an elite defense just bc they didn’t play elite offenses all year.

Is there a chance this defense continues to dominate and doesn’t give up 20+ points again? For sure.

But the likelihood is they eventually cede some points. Probably not 35-40 points but college football is a sport made up of mistakes. Some team will get some lucky bounces against them and find a way to put 24+ points.

Let’s hope it’s on Wednesday.

Their defense is good, its overrated. I cant think of a single impressive offensive team they played against. The one part of their defense i dont think is overrated is their pass defense. And that stems from them basically using bear fronts to cover up all the blockers bottling the run game then keeping everything in front of them on 3rd downs. Our way to win this game is to run the ball, over and over again. Right up the middle. Thats where they are supposed to be strong. I have much faith in us running it there. Its what we have done in all the big games we played, except FSU if u call it that. We ran for 180 v UF, 175 v A&M and 134 v ND. Those are the 3 most talented fronts we played. If we are forced to throw the ball, i dont see us moving it alot. I think we eek out 16-10. And yes they are not great at rushing the passer. They had 5 sacks v Indiana, Texas and Michigan. We had 14 in our 3 big games talent v talent.

This game and time of the season is where you need Mario bro style offense.
