Stat that’s a sign of the times

Why? Always take the sure money. 5 star QBs are getting around 2/8. Nothing wrong with getting $2M to improve your game. Plus you burn a year of eligibility.
I think there is a middle ground here. There is an argument to take the best of both worlds with a second tier P4 team that still has money to spend but you would be their unquestioned #1 guy right away.

Stay away from the teams that have money to burn because they will happily pay somebody more if they think it will get them over the hump.

That is assuming the unrestricted movement that we are currently seeing doesn't change.

If my son was a 5 star Qb I'd send him to a smaller school where he could start instantly and get reps and then transfer back to a power 4 school
No you wouldn’t. The only way you would is if you had a HUGE trust fund for him.

There would be absolutely no reason for him to miss out on a huge payday other than some vague, nebulous, holier than thou, trying to win a hypothetical argument that wouldn’t stand up in reality

I know grabbing portal qb's seems to be a logical strategy now, but it seems like paying top dollar for a portal qb every year hamstrings our ability to earmark enough funds to fill the other necessary holes at other positions of need. We desperately need a hs qb to hit so we can afford to sign true difference makers at spots like Wr, linebacker, and DT.

This is a myth. There is no discount keeping your own players relative to signing one from the portal. You pay the market rate to get them on campus and if they are any good you will have to pay the market rate every year to keep them.

Mario won’t renegotiate, said while simultaneously upping bags to keep the roster intact

Feels like we are getting closer to the right balance here

Nickel and Coleman are both very talented and won’t break the bank. Doesn’t seem to be any bag games or drama with them

Next year maybe someone like Sorsby is available to us for much less than Beck is commanding or Nickel/Coleman hit the ground running and we don’t need to portal again

You'd still have to pay that kid to retain him. Without a CBA and underclass contracts there is no way to get a stud QB on a discount
So, next year if Nickel or Coleman wins the job are we paying either 4 million ? Even having one year to pocket whatever the difference may be helps us allocate to other areas of need

Where do you get this? You say it over and over again. The only thing I can find is him talking in regards to hold outs for participating in Spring ball when asked about the Nico situation.

Came here to post exactly this. If Nickel is the QB of the future we (and everyone else) thinks he is, we'll still be paying Ward/Beck money to keep him around.

We are officially in the Salary Cap Era of CFB.
Yes…..With no actual salary cap, lol. If someone “in charge”, don’t do something fast, this thing is gonna get waaayyy crazier than it is right now.

I most definitely would and while they obviously can't pay what the ohio states of the world can pay its not like he'd be making pennies. Boise State, Washington State, etc could offer a nice nil package to a 5 star Qb if they really wanted to and offer him instant playing time.

No you wouldn’t.

That tells me you’re either extremely wealthy and a very healthy fund set up for him

Or

You don’t have kids and you’re speaking out of your ***. Or if you have kids they won’t play P4 football

He said he won't allow a player to hold the program hostage... which he allowed before and was rumored here to again with a certain RB to up the 💰

Keeping your roster is all part of the process. Need to pay today's price one way or another.

That's an interesting strategy.

IF athlete is a no name/low star, then the smaller school could be the better route to get tape and make a name.

IF athlete is a 5 star, tough to see how going lower route is better economically and development-wise than a major elite program.

The opportunity lost cost on not having that NIL money and investing it is brutal.

And so rages the debate...

who gets "more"...

Boise State's QB1?

Bama's 5* QB2?

If history is a guide, working hard and patience appears to be more lucrative as Bama's QB2.

Why?

Because Bama's QB2 with limited tape appears to get same portal opportunities as Boise State's QB1.

Thoughts???

Bama’s 5* QB2 was probably a top recruit while Boise State’s QB1 more than likely was not. The Bama QB2 is still considered having elite potential, which might mean more what Boise State’s QB1 offers, unless Boise State’s QB1 has elite traits and statistics.
