Stat that’s a sign of the times

Next year it’ll flip back to home grown QBs
Next year probably mostly non portal guys, but the following year seems like it'll likely go back to mostly portal guys.

Definitely 2026:
Drew Allar - Home Grown 5 star (32 Composite)
Cade Klubnik - Home Grown 5 star (6 Composite)
Garret Nussmeier - Home Grown 4 Star (84 Composite)
Carson Beck - Portal from UGA (254 Composite)
Miller Moss - Portal from USC (76 Composite)

Possibly 2026, More likely 2027:
Arch Manning - Home Grown 5 star (1 Composite)
Sam Leavitt - Portal from MSU (311 Composite)
LaNorris Sellers - Home Grown 4 Star (256 Composite)
John Mateer - Portal from WSU (1,766 Composite)
Nico Iamaleava - Portal from UTenn (3 Composite)
Dante Moore - Portal from UCLA (4 Composite)
Aidan Chiles - Portal from OSU (168 Composite)

2027 At the Earliest:
DJ Lagway - Home Grown 5 star (7 Composite)
Jackson Arnold - Portal from OU (8 Composite)
.....

But see the trend, with the home grown guy, it basically better be a 5 star that plays ASAP. Manning is pretty unique case. Most 5star prospects aren't doing what he did sitting 2 seasons. Most of these other 5 star Qbs end up playing year 1 or at worst go into year 1 with like a senior with expectations they're the dude year 2. This is why I have always said there is almost no point in getting mid to really high 4star Qbs. Go all in for the 5 star prospect, or hit the portal for the starter. Now yes Ideally you get a 2-yr guys out of the portal. But Regardless yearly we need to be taking high 3star/low 4star type talents that will be okay sitting 2 years as depth/development. Otherwise you'll have no depth.
Just either we get 1 of those guys and 1 5star Qb, or 1 of those guys and 1 portal Qb. That's just how it should be for the most important postion. We need to take 2 QBs yearly no matter what with 105 roster spots.

QB is probably the one position where you'll always have portal activity, due to the high profile importance of the position, and only one plays (unless you're GT and put in one QB for running and one for passing, and our multimillion dollar football factory can't figure it out, but I digress)

You'll always have QBs portaling who either don't mesh with their current system or get passed on the depth chart... and you also have QBs who are late bloomers that the big schools can just pluck with cash after a smaller school does all the dirty work in recruitment/development

If my son was a 5 star Qb I'd send him to a smaller school where he could start instantly and get reps and then transfer back to a power 4 school

Why? Always take the sure money. 5 star QBs are getting around 2/8. Nothing wrong with getting $2M to improve your game. Plus you burn a year of eligibility.

I know grabbing portal qb's seems to be a logical strategy now, but it seems like paying top dollar for a portal qb every year hamstrings our ability to earmark enough funds to fill the other necessary holes at other positions of need. We desperately need a hs qb to hit so we can afford to sign true difference makers at spots like Wr, linebacker, and DT.

IF Miami had a "HS QB hit in the program", our Canes are still paying portal money to retain said HS QB who hit in the program.

Math is math.

Came here to post exactly this. If Nickel is the QB of the future we (and everyone else) thinks he is, we'll still be paying Ward/Beck money to keep him around.

We are officially in the Salary Cap Era of CFB.

PRESENTLY without the salary cap.

The beast will eat itself alive.

People villify Modell to this day (who have no clue how business actually works), but his acumen and level headed take on reality by moving the Brown to Baltimore forced the NFL to get a grip and change several policies that enabled the growth and "fairness of franchises" that you see today.

Right now, college football is in the pre-1995 NFL era and barrelling towards a cliff.

You'd still have to pay that kid to retain him. Without a CBA and underclass contracts there is no way to get a stud QB on a discount
