Spring Transfer Portal

A hit in my opinion is someone who comes here and contributes at a quality level or turns into a starter. Not every transfer guy will be a Rambo or Jaelan Philips. Parrish had 750 total yards 6TDs last season, I would consider that a hit. A miss to me is someone who either doesn't play or when they do they struggle significantly.
Can’t believe I’m saying this, but a rare W for Mack.

I’ll dumb it down even further - If it improves the roster, it’s a W. If it doesn’t, it’s an L. If you didn’t have that acquisition before, imagine how much worse you’d be. Pretty simple.

Even Ladson ended up better than the alternatives of crybaby Key Smiff and Redding. Is it at the level we ultimately need to be at? No. Is it improvement for now? How would you argue it’s not?

Got it. So if the dude’s not a first team all-American, he’s a JAG.
Yawn… you resort to hyperbole because you have no real retort here. They don’t need to be first team all Americans, if you noticed making the all ACC honorable mention(Mesidor) list was good enough to clear my hurdle of a difference maker. If anything I could respect an argument that my hurdle is set to low but I’m trying to be fair here.

No, because you aren’t considering what they were brought in to do. We had a roster with multiple glaring weaknesses and the guys we brought in were meant to make an impact. Most didn’t do that and it led to us having a 5-7 record.

I wonder how many hits vs misses he has.

Hits
Fransisco Mauigoa
Colbie Young? Not sure if he was a portal guy
Daryl Porter Jr
Davonte Brown
Henry Parrish
Matt Lee
Javion Cohen
Mitchell Agude
Darrell Jackson
Akheem Mesidor

Miss
Logan Sagapalu
Thomas Gore
Antonio Moultrie
Frank Ladson
Terry Roberts

Meh
Jacob litchenstien
Johnathan Dennis
Caleb Johnson
how is Thomas gore or Terry Roberts misses when we haven't played a game yet?

smh c'mon man each post loses credibility

sagapalu still has time to be a solid depth piece (considering what we had when Mario arrived, he was never MEANT to be a star.. but rather a depth piece)

Caleb johnson and frank ladson float the line of being "misses" but again, considering our depth at those positions, really can't blame the staff for taking them at the time

That's just not the case with every transfer guy. Not every portal guy is brought in to become an impact player. Mitchell Agude was a 2.5 Sack guy for UCLA, he came here and had 4 sacks 7 TFL and a ton of QB pressures. None of us were really expecting him to be a Jaelan Philips type of DE. A portal guy doesn't have to become an impact player to be considered a hit in my opinion because so few of them actually do.

You can tell by how they looked in the Spring game and how they played in the spring. Thomas Gore was completely outmatched out there, the chances of him becoming a quality contributor are slim to none. Terry Roberts didn't look good either, numerous people on here have said he looked like a special team guy. Maybe he's still injured but right now he doesn't look like he will contribute and its been that way most of spring.

Portal hits last year were Parrish, Young, Mesidor and Jackson*. All with the bonus of being multi-year guys if not for the Jackson fiasco. 4 solid starters. Toss in Agude who came on, and mystifying why Johnson, 2nd team All-Pac, and Porter (solid at WVU) didn't pan out in '22. How much of the latter lies at Steele & Co.'s feet is tough to determine. The coordination of the back 7 was oft an issue though. Really surprising that Mario's portal OL were busts.

For the team in 22 we were absolutely looking for impact players. We needed big time help at DE because we had no one worth a **** there. That’s what we needed and only Messidor hit that mark. Yea, expecting Agude to be great was a stretch because he wasn’t that guy but we needed him to be. Same goes with Mike, CB, WR and DT. We needed guys that were going to come in start and make the position much better. That 100% didn’t happen at Mike or CB and we whiffed on WR all together. Jackson fit the bill at DT on paper but he was just okay on the field.

Look, we are paying Mario 8MM a year, which is a top 10 rate. His primary strength is recruiting and on the HS side I would say the returns fit the salary but on the portal side it does not. It’s not a disaster but it ain’t great. We are paying Mario 8MM to bring this program back to glory. I have no disillusionment that he may not bring us a chip but I expect us to become at the very least a playoff contender and that requires expectations to be higher. We need to shoot higher, we need expectations to be the quality of a Francis Mauigoa, a Messidor, N Kelly etc not Caleb Johnson, Agude or Denis/Saga

We had what 10+ Portal additions last year, do you think Mario was expecting all of them to come in and become immediate impact players?

Mario doesn’t tamper like USC, Texas & others do. These elite kids already have the contracts negotiated before they even enter their names. Jordan Addison didn’t even try to hide it. Game is rigged. Need to do a better job (see FSU) at end of season (legit) transfers.
Yes he does they just aren’t biting because the bags aren’t big enough and the program isn’t relevant.

If this guy hits the portal we need to press hard would love for him to battle brown and Williams for next year

Gonna be hard to convince a kid like that to transfer here this year. Unfortunately a place like UF would be way more attractive being they have nobody in that room. Would be great though.

I thinkni consider the portal player class to determine miss too. If guy is a redshirt FR he got time to get better

Cisco - best LB
Deen and Mesidor - 2 of top 3 Dlineman/edge guys
Parrish - top RB in 2022
Lee + Cohen - 2 of top 3 o-lineman
DPJ and Brown - top 2 corners
Colbie Young - best WR

Agude was 2nd-best edge in 2022
Darrell Jackson was best DT in 2022

Sure there have been some bad evals, and no he’s not a top 5 portal guy. But C’mon guys. Most positions have a transfer that’s top or near the top. At least make some valid points instead of pi$$ing down your leg for fun.
Can someone explain to me if this is satire or parody.

We aren’t keeping up with Texas or USC schools that have been just as disappointing on the field but clearly have a better NIL program than us.

Our NIL game is overhyped.

We should be back channeling every kid from the Miami area at all positions of need and offering them big money to come home.
Those schools are a much easier sell, I doubt this is all because of NIL. USC won 11 games last year, have a top 5 QB in CFB, and a top 5 offensive mind in CFB. Texas improved from 5 to 8 wins under Sarkisian, has oil money, and their starting QB can do things like this

We won 5 games last year, have a HC who has a bad reputation, and had the worst offense in school's history. Where do you think a kid who was apart of a NC team and whose previous teammates are/going to be 1st round picks is going to go? We'll get our share but the better squads are going to be more attractive to top players at the moment.
