Just think of it this way...Butch is the standard. If they can't find guys that compare with or exceed Butch, then he is the fall back option. Not a bad option if after trying to land even bigger fish fail.

That should automatically eliminate the possibility of any Mario scenario unless a Butch/Mario package is on the table.

I know some people here are a bit pessimistic given past experience, but there is no need to assume that this process will turn out a dud- not if Butch is the measure.

I just read that again. It's obvious that UM is throwing a smoke screen out there and toying with people. UM is hiring Butch, but wants to troll some people before they make Butch official. This is similar to a silent commitment from a recruit, if you will.

I hope you're right. Its virtually guaranteed that UM will make a horrible hire if its not Butch.

Butch is our only chance

What is this nonsense about "fit".

It's like the "cloud". The excuse for any coach that fails is that he was not a good "fit".

I can't stand this nebulous bull****.

Charlie Strong is not a championship level head coach. His record at Louisville was suspect and he left the cupboard completely bare for Petrino. Not to mention how poor his recruiting has been at Texas and the on field performance.

Paul and Miller do not need to be on the committee because they have already decided who is being hired. The committee is to placate the former players , give a couple women something to do, and make Blake feel important. The money wants Butch and money gets what is wants. I even think President Frenk wants Butch. His letter after the Duke crybaby crap is something I have never seen -- a UM President defending the football team about anything. I think the old Mexican might want to kick a little butt and who better than Butch. Maybe I am reading way to much into it but it was first time I ever saw it. I almost smashed Foote in the mouth back in the day because all he ever did was attack the team.

This all god **** day. People don't realize what talks, that's $$$. You bring in Butch these are the automatics upon hiring.

1. At least 60k season tickets sold for the 2016 season.

2. A huge increase in donations and Hurricane Club members. (Personally I'd become one again and donate more)

3. The CFB media going nuts.

4. The rest of the CFB world ****ting themselves.

its so ***cing easy that it hurts my brain to see these other also-ran coaches mentioned and chumps like Wario.

these are the only guys that I would be happy about other than the obvious (Butch):

Chip Kelly
Dan Mullen*

*borderline

anyone that says Wario should be shot. even guys like Herman are just too unproven.

The stadium seats 65,000 for the Dolphins, less for UM, so 60,000 season tickets? Try again please.

That committee and the stuff they're leaking is becoming a really funny dance with core fans.

proxy.php

Do you feel like the committee is leaking info on "big names" to hide the fact they're really going after Butch/Mario, or are they leaking info on Butch/Mario to hide the fact they're going after big names???

...I need a scotch.

I think they're leaking names because they don't have a clear approach (outside of the brainstorming phase) yet. I've heard some of the talks they're having - even just between some former golden era (not that Golden) players. Perhaps it's changed in the last week. I think stuff has a tendency to fall on its face unless you create a specific way to measure each candidate. Whether you're talking about football, health care or landscaping. I'm not suggesting they have to be fixed or rigid. But, at least measure out the rationale so this doesn't come down to a former player or some random committee member providing their feelings. Maybe that will happen. That's not really the role of the search firm, though.

For example, as a hypothetical, how does Charlie Strong measure out above Tom Herman? Are they digging into the context of his success at Louisville and how that would translate? I realize there are very smart people on that committee, and it makes me feel a bit better that someone as wildly thorough as Vilma is at least involved. I just find it odd that, if you feel the need to put together an entire gang of perspectives, you don't ask yourself "why?" Do you not feel confident in your AD? Are you openly repeating that this final decision will come down to him because you want a potential scapegoat?

More questions than answers. Sorry.

why is generally the most important question of all in most contexts. on that note, what are the 5-10 most important attributes (in order of importance) that a UM HBC should have? what is the set of criteria that UM should be looking for?

Not looking good for butch.

### After reviewing circumstances that led to Butch Davis’ dismissal at North Carolina, some inside UM have concerns, even though Davis wasn’t implicated by the NCAA.

Though one person on UM’s advisory search committee (Jonathan Vilma) was recruited by Davis, played for him and likes him, the committee excluded a couple of deep-pocketed donors/Board of Trustee members who strongly support Davis.

Davis remains a fallback option; one UM person said athletic director Blake James knows he has Davis if all else fails.

### We reported last week that the UM administration is under the impression that Texas coach Charlie Strong has interest in the Miami job, and Fox’s Bruce Feldman reported Tuesday that Strong (37-15 at Louisville but just 10-13 at Texas) is indeed interested.

An associate of James said UM prefers to hire someone who has had success as a head coach in college (even better if it’s at a major program) or with an NFL team.

Strong, Georgia’s Mark Richt and Greg Schiano would qualify, as would others whose names are swirling in coaching rumors, such as Arizona’s Rich Rodriguez, Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen or North Carolina’s Larry Fedora. And none of us should be surprised if the search firm hired uncovers a successful active coach that nobody has mentioned, but who has interest in coming here.

UM also is expected to consider Mario Cristobal and Rob Chudzinski because of UM ties and other strengths they bring to the table. Colts coach Chuck Pagano would hold some appeal to UM, but he might not be available until January, long after the search concludes.

Lol...article sounds like when Golden would NOT be fired according to those close to James. A couple of weeks later, canned.

I love this. Have we not taken the fall back option for the last three coaches? It will surely be Butch. Any other coach is going to laugh at the idea of working for Flake James and say "thanks but no thanks!" And, boom! we get Butch by default! I'll take it any way I can get it.

I agree. These guys are delusional. I bet we would sell more tickets, but as it stands there are probably only 25-30k season ticket holders. Most people (myself included) scalp tickets each game or just come when they can. Also, donations would increase some yes, but nothing crazy. As for the media, they would take a wait and see approach (as we all should). He is an old man. I will support whoever is the coach (minus Mario or Mike Shula), but Herman, Gundy, Mullen, Miles, etc. are all better candidates.
