Something I'd like to see the offense do more this year

As I mentioned in another thread, I anticipate that, offensively, we'll heavily rely on Kaaya progressing to his next level, which means lots of 3WR and 4WR looks. From the run game, even out of those sets, I'd really like to see more use of this:

In other words, the inside zone run game. I think Yearby is perfectly suited as a "short-area burst" type back to make the most of it. His cutback ability is obviously elite. His vision is excellent. And, he's put on the necessary weight to withstand some punishment.

*If anyone can edit that gif to just appear on the post, that'd be helpful. I can't seem to get it to work from my current comp.

Lu, you think this years Oline will be effective enough at the point of attack to run a play effectively?

This is my concern, as well. My fear is that we will be forced to go with Gus more than I'd like because of holes in the O line depth.

Question. Do you think that play will be as effective without the threat of the run from Kaaya?

That backside OLB has the threat of the QB running and he can't crash hard leaving that cutback open for Mason.

I was going to ask/say the same thing. Once Kc McDermott gets healthy, him, darling and Linder I trust. Danny I. can hold his own. After that, I'm very skeptical. I don't like that freshmen Gauither and St. Louis are most likely going to have to jump in and be contributors.

but Gus is horrible if he has to stop and start in the backfield, which presumably would happen alot with a ****** OL

Yeah, Edwards is a downhill runner all the way, he's not Fred Astaire. That's not his game

Regarding the questionable Oline, I think one way to mitigate that is to go more no-huddle, up-tempo and basically let Kaaya run the show, controlling things and with an emphasis on getting the ball out of his hands quickly

I used the words "concern" and "fear" in my post. I think we're on the same page here.

Kayaa is not a threat to run at all. He's the slowest starting QB we've ever had here. He and Gino would be neck and neck. You don't ask a guy like that to run a read zone offense, imo.

Let me clarify: it's not about the play I linked, which involves the QB running as an option. It's about the blocking scheme in it. Watch the OL.

Gus' best play is actually outside zone. Despite the misconceptions about him being a 'big back,' he's really just a 'big athlete' who does his best work in a one cut scenario.

Yes, I actually think this year's OL is very well-suited for inside and outside zone plays. I'm more concerned about their strength and experience with the power run plays for which I usually encourage. I trust guys like McDermott (if he ends up inside at LG) and Linder to be able to work together with the combo blocks necessary in an inside zone scheme. I think Isidora is actually better suited as a "chip and get to the second level" guy than he is as a power run guy.

We'll see what Coley has in mind, but one thing I've been weary of during his tenure is his 'grab bag' type of playcalling, as well as curious playcalls pursuant to the skill sets of his units. I understand Duke was a fantastic zone runner, but I thought our OL was often best suited for power run plays last year and the year prior.

I would just like to say, "thank god threads like this are finally back." It was a long offseason. Good stuff Lu.

Agree with you here brother. Finally some threads with a little substance. I understand everyone hates the current state of the program, but the constant moaning is boring af.

The OL is a huge ? but if this mitigates their weaknesses I'm all fo it, it would go with the philosophy, think players then plays.

We often start every year being worried about the OL or a specific player on the OL...but it seems like every year someone unexpectedly steps up and perform better than we expected. Linder, was that guy last year; I think Sonny might be the guy this year...but we'll just have to wait and see. Great post Lu

This is far different than last year. Last year we had a potential 1st rounder in E. Flowers at LT, a guy drafted In Felciano at LG, a 3 year starter at C in McDermott. There were a lot of starts on that Line, this year not so much.

Football talk! Wooo! Check out the Article for some more on the personnel/formation packages that Lu mentioned. Note that on the twins Stack/Slant formations, the Y player can very well be a flexible TE type player (Njoku/Herndon/maybe even Dobard?) and the H player can be occupied by blocking/receiving threat (Dobard/Herndon). Very cool stuff. <3 Malzahn.

We can run all blocking schemes out of this stuff!

pretty sure that was a COACH D moment there...leaving one guy on the right side for 4 folks to block and the RB took the wrong angle..but hey Im with you!! all for opening up...and would Kaaya read that like that QB did..

Playing a freshman OL is more and more common. I watch SEC games and see Freshman lineman playing a lot. We played Flowers as a Freshman. Nick Linder was darn good last year. If one of those guys can step up to the level Linder was we should be fine.
