Miami finished six straight years unranked with Shannon and Golden. Richt's first year we finished 20th. This year we finished 13th.

Golden's last recruiting class ranked 27th. Richt's interim class finished 22nd. His first full class was 12th. This class is currently 6th, a sliver behind Bama.

The trends are easy to read. We are on the path to being Miami again. And when we're Miami, there isn't a more complete team in the nation.

Unless the Bama team plane crashes or their bus crashes before a game, the next two titles belong pretty much to Bama. Their isn't a rooster out there that can compare to what they have already and what they will bring in. If someone, like us, is lucky with a QB who can be a wild card like Deshaun Watson, then one could compete with Bama with a puncher's chance.

I agree that Richt is righting the ship and the future is very bright, but Bama..... cot dam......

I think the problem is everyone's seeing that Smart took the team Richt built to the national title game, without properly looking at it deeper.

UGA got to avoid Bama in the SEC title game.

UGA got lucky with injuries.

UGA had a senior laden team (31).

Richt got this team just as close as Kirby did to winning a national title in 2012/2013 where they were 5 yards from beating Bama in the SEC title game. Everyone knew that whomever won that game was going to annihilate an overrated Notre Dame team that year.

My only two gripes with Richt this year is how vanilla the offense is - knowing full well we had a poor man's Jalen Hurts behind center and what our D-line depth looks like at this present moment.

But Richt walked into a crap situation with this team and in year 2 won the division, got us to 10 wins and the Orange Bowl. Smart clearly walked into the short-term better situation.

In year 3, I wouldn't be surprised if Miami has the better year than UGA.

The main differences in Miami and Georgia for 2017... their key juniors returned after 2016. Ours left. They didn’t have 1 starter get hurt all year (except Eason and it made them better). We lost Walton, had Richards limited all year, lost D Jackson, lost Herndon, and had Willis ineligible. Their freshman QB was an EE. Ours enrolled in summer 2. They had 31 seniors. We had 9. They played at 84 scholarship players. We played at 72-74

People need to get Alabaga out of their heads. That’s a freak of nature going on up there right now. Eventually, Sabag will die or quit, and things will even back out.

We are infinitely better off now than we were a couple years ago. Get me a dynamic QB similar to what Clemson had with Watson, and that’s when we really turn the corner as a program. If we don’t get that QB it’ll be a longer journey back to the top.

Watson is the single moment that turned Clemson from a top 15 team into an upper echelon program. They successfully built off the momentum that Watson brought to their program.

They showed what a senior-laden team loaded with Rick’s recruits could do. You’re right that that was a main difference.

Another difference is that Spermy Fart took over for UGA’s best HC ever and Rick took over for a blight on society.

This. COT DAM is right

My balls just got wet reading this, however, watching last nights game, short of Willis and maybe Silvera after a full year in a college strength training program, I don't see any other DTs currently on our roster that would be in either team's 3-deep. Can we get to the playoffs without that element? If so, is our medium-term identity going to be a high-octane offense mixed with a bends-but-gets-turnovers defense?

Did you not watch OU play?

When Richt was at Georgia, he had to go up against Urban Meyer's Florida and a decent Tennessee team. The fact that both Florida and Tennessee fired their coaches this year (and the fact that we have a thread called "Gator Tears") indicates what kind of year it was for those two teams.

Goes without saying.... it's a lot easier to win when your two biggest division rivals are having historically ****** seasons.

So in other words, Georgia was never really tested until they played Auburn... and they split that series 50/50.

While I'm much happier with how our OL depth is progressing, I don't think we'll have the necessary road grating OL to impose our will on defense in the medium-term. Plus, I'm not sure how well that game plan would work against a Clemson D that reminded us that we are not a top tier team.

There was a crazy stat mentioned last night by one of the commentators. Georgia had no starters injured all season. I mean, how fvckin absurd is that? Georgia missed their only opportunity at a ship, it's only down from here for Fart et. al.

Trends look good, but it's also a small data set. There is major risk of regression next year. We struggled against a lot of middling ACC teams, lost to a ****, etc. A couple bounces go to the wrong way (FSU, the GT miracle) and we only win 8 games. Next year is key. We'll see if Richt can build and take this to the next level. It's not even the win total necessarily. We could win the same amount of games, but still be a much better team. You know a squad that is bordering on elite when you see it. This year, I saw a scrappy, opportunistic squad with a dud of an offense, helmed by a mediocre QB. Next year, we should be substantially better. Let's see what happens. I remain convinced that to make the jump, Richt is going to have to hire some offensive coaching help.

If a Dynamic QB emerges next year (DL worries me as well), there is no reason we shouldn't be a playoff team

Tennessee hasn’t been decent since 07.

Meyer lost 3 games in 2010.

How many SEC titles did Richt play for since 2011? Two?

I'm convinced that only Miami can stop the Bama juggernaut. We're not there yet, but it's going to have to be us. I don't see anyone else on their level over the next few years including UGA and Clemson. Maybe OSU (hurts to say that).

This. Until Saban retires, forget about national titles. Pipe dream. Heck, can we even get past Clemson?
