so the smoke begins (Fall Football Conference Updates)

They should have waited a few weeks to see how things continue to play out rather than panicking and pulling the plug. Commish Warren is an attorney and he's got the liberal presidents running scared. How will it look if the SEC is playing games and HIS SON is on the Miss State team? You can't make this stuff up.

Yeah exactly. Or made some phone calls behind the scenes to see if other universities and conferences were on board BEFORE going public with the cancellation.

Just a really bad look for the Big 10. And now you have schools, athletic directors, and coaches in that conference that are in open rebellion.

As someone who doesn't give a **** about that conference.... I'll say it's at least very amusing.

Plus the big ten owns Nebraska’s tv rights
Technically I think they only own the rights to games within the Big 10 or in Nebraska no?
If they play in the SEC it would be on CBS and if they play at ND it would be on NBC which are not affiliated with the BIG.
Or am I missing something?

pretty sure the ohio state president received a phone call from some booster who was like you better get in line playing football otherwise i am not donating millions ever again

This is what i was alluding to earlier. They stand to lose money by not playing but when these big time boosters get ****ed youll see some change quickly.

Now will it mean they play? No because the vote was 12-2

**** no them ******* voted no to play and big 10 commission say nebraska cant play out of conference so OStaint can suck a fat one

So his school president voted against playing, but Ryan Day and Gene Smith are going rogue and looking for games? Makes sense.

OSU has a new "interim" president. Some ultra liberal lady. It does make sense that she and the OSU boosters wouldn't be on the same page out of the gate.

But I'm just speculating. Who knows what the **** is going on.

Lets see if the B10 commissioner blasts them like he did Nebraska. I say no because Taint is one of the big boys in the conference

The Big 10 blew their load too early canceling the season. If you read the comments from the Big 10 university presidents that were made immediately after, it was all about how EVERY conference was going to follow their lead and cancel too. Then they wouldn't have looked so bad in comparison.

But now that every other conference besides the PAC 12 has left them alone at the alter looking like pussies, I'm sure a lot of them are regretting their decision.

If nothing changes, this is going to be a catastrophe for the BIG10 and Pac12. They've basically given themselves the death penalty for a year. That can't be good.

"Wait...we have a Heisman candidate and a potential NC team....hmmm...."

The big ten has the tv rights for all their schools, then they went out and negotiated Tv contracts with fox, which owns the big 10 network, and abc on behalf of all the schools. That revenue is then distributed among the schools. Nebraska would pay a huge penalty if it backed out. They can’t just leave The conference on a whim. My guess is that the vote they took also matters, otherwise why do it? The vote was probably binding in some way according to the conference by laws

“I know Gene and I talked again this morning at length about this and we’re still exploring all of those options,” the head coach said. “This thing’s moving, it’s changing and we are looking at everything, I can promise you that.”

Ohio State players, staff and even parents have made it very clear that they believe the safest place to be during this pandemic is within the football program and its facilities. The Buckeyes believe they have the health and safety measures in place to handle a fall season and Day made it clear during his conversation with the media that he still believes the Scarlet and Gray could manage a football season in 2020.

“There’s just a lot of conversations,” Day said. “We’re trying to explore every option possible, and we owe it to our kids to do that and that’s what we’re doing. I can’t really get into specifics because there’s still a lot of unknowns there but we’re asking all the questions and pushing the envelope as much as we can, making sure that it’s obviously safe to do so. But we’ve got to make sure that we turn over every stone.”

A major obstacle is the Big Ten itself. On Tuesday night, after Nebraska indicated in a statement that the Cornhuskers would continue to look at options, Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren told Yahoo! Sports’ Pete Thamel that teams wouldn't be permitted to play football this fall and still be a member of the conference.

As Smith mentioned, there are also television contracts to consider. If Ohio State was to join the SEC, Big 12 or ACC, even temporarily, that could violate terms with the Big Ten’s TV partners, FOX and ABC/ESPN.

All of this is being discussed and options are being explored by Ohio State.

Who has more power Ohio st or Nebraska? I will bet Ohio st can change things. Michigan Penn st also want to play. They know spring football probably wont happen. $$$$$$$$$$

They Could bring back the Thanksgiving weekend OU-Nebraska game that was traditionally a huge ratings get.

This time it would even be more Huuuuuuuge as the President would say.
I miss the heck out of that game.

Why would you operate under the assumption that they wouldn’t? you’re acting like Nebraska is the only school that’s going to Lose money by not playing. Only idiots are turning down 50 million a year long term to make a few million this year. They aren’t making any money this year by ticket sales or tv revenue. Plus the big ten owns Nebraska’s tv rights
I suspect a few things are going on here in the PAC-12 and Big Ten:

1. Some schools have truly think that they can play in the spring. So for them what does it matter if the kickoff is delayed six month? They'll still get their TV revenue, and hopefully the pandemic will have lessened so that the stadium can be better filled in March versus September. This is probably the majority.

2. Some schools don't like football's priority over athletics. That's a minority, but I remember it being a common refrain on Canespace around 2014 that the school administration would be perfectly happy with 7 - 9 win seasons as long as the money continued to flow. For these schools - if they truly exist - they want the money and are planning on playing in 2021. But it's no huge loss - outside of revenue

3. Some schools are convinced that football has to resume in the fall of 2021, and have enough of a financial cushion that they can wait a year.

4. A few schools may recognize that there is no guarantee that the Big Ten or PAC-12 would agree to start football in the spring or even fall of 2021. There are no metrics at this point that have been agreed upon to allow for that return. Is it 10K cases a day in the US? 5K cases a day? Or is it less than 50 cases a day in the affected city where the colleges are? Or is it zero? Does a vaccine need to be available? Is that enough, or does it have to have 75% effectiveness or greater? There are no agreed upon standards. If you're Nebraska, putting aside the outrage of the fanbase for the postponement of the fall season, do you trust that the Big Ten will not be in the very same situation on August 11, 2021. And can a Nebraska - or other schools - financially absorb two years of no sports?

lol, this was predictable. Too much pressures on the school NOT to play. They will all come back to play.

i think the boosters told the president you don't represent us change course immediately we want to play

Ohio State voted "no."

Now they want to play? Sounds like their AD Gene Smith, as well as the coach and players, and fans and boosters, all want to play. But the liberal lady president doesn't want them to play.

Internal struggle.
Might the school president fire the coach and AD if they came out publicly against the decision?
