We tend to focus on physical tools with receivers, but in the past few years Miami's best receivers have been the smart guys. Allen Hurns, Phillip Dorsett and Braxton Berrios did everything right off the field and it translated to the field. Now, KJ Osborn and Mike Harley are the two guys we can count on.

Jeremiah Payton may be the next guy to fit in this mold.

Was that him rocking the 84 jersey on punt returns last week?
 
I see you're new to CIS, I'm gonna help you out. Around here all that matters is speed. The fastest guy is always the best guy and if he's not playing it's because the coaches are blind/stupid/biased. You won't go wrong if you apply this logic to all positions. Just pick a physical atribute and rank everyone based on that. For example, all that matters in a QB is arm strength. Good luck.

Agree that FB smarts matters with WRs, But also, Hurns, Berrios and Dorsett were also physical marvels in their own ways. Dorsett was one of the fastest 40s at the combine. Berrios was one of the top short shuttles. And Hurns was a size/length/speed combination that stood out.

There is a requisite level of athleticism, but we had other guys who had those traits. The smart guys are the ones who succeed.

You are seeing a similar thing in the NFL. Cooper Kupp and Tyler Lockett are third and fourth in the league in receiving despite being overlooked as three-star recruit/third round picks. Both guys are students of the game.
 
So we're saying the other guys aren't smart? Yes, brains are important, but so are other things. If it was just about brains, they would draft based on a test and call it a day. Played with some dudes that were as smart as a box of rocks and the best guy on the field. This is a really ill advised thread with an immeasurable attribute. You've finally flown the coop.

I’ll take your smarts and specifically point to work ethic..guys with the strongest work ethic at WR are the most successful. And that’s always been the truth. It’s never enough to just be fast and tall at that position. Same with DBs

Nobody said it was just about brains. You need talent. But we rarely talk about brains at the WR position. We focus on other things.

A couple former NFL scouts have a podcast (Move the Sticks) where they were going over their misses at WR, and they noted that they tended to undervalue things like brains and toughness in their WR evaluations.

That made me look at the Hurricanes and it was clear that the guys with the best mental approach were having the most success. Hurns, Dorsett and Berrios are all exceptional in that category, and KJ Osborn is currently outplaying a depth chart full of four stars.

Not trying to start anything, but I'd like to know who our dumb receivers are ?

Most of the WRs on the team are pretty intelligent young men and yes, that includes JT. Most of them outside of JT have kept their nose clean off the field as well. Pope just made the honor roll.

I dont see the correlation. Not enough to point it out at least.

Youll be hard pressed to find a dumber human being than Antonio Brown and he might be the best WR on the planet when hes on the field. Julio Jones is no Rhodes scholar either.

Antonio Brown is football smart and works like a maniac. That's why he succeeds despite average physical tools. Julio Jones has the mentality of a walk-on along with supreme physical tools, similar to Andre Johnson.

It's not about book smarts, necessarily.
