Attention to details. Awareness.
Late in the game, OSU faked a punt and got a first down to keep a drive alive.
But wait…1/2 second before the snap Smart saw OSU lined up for a fake, went a little nuts and called timeout Just in time,
No first down. OSU punted for real and Ga. Got the ball back.

The art of game management is no small thing.

Luckily we've got one of the best in the business

Mario would probably Have caught that too but he would have already wasted all of his timeouts so he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it…

Smart is a POS using the Bammer formula, stacking 4-5 star talent on the three deep.

He’s never been thought of as a “smart” football coach. The examples you referenced are things any coach would’ve done. There is nothing particularly innovative, or intelligent that he does that differentiates him from any other coach. He just recruits a shlt ton of talent.

The site is just full of people that want to blow the coach du jour.

But recruiting a s*** ton of talent is a pretty good strength, no? Doesn’t deserve to be demeaned.
Richt recruited well at Georgia but never came very close to winning a NC.
If using the Bammer formula guarantees wins, why haven’t SarkesIan or Kiffen reached the playoffs?
I just look at results. You are what your record says you are, a famous man once said.

What Dykes has done this year is an example of very smart coaching.

I agree on Smart making a good decision and while not as down on him as some, I do think he’s solid at best as a hc but always been a very good defensive coach.

That said: their ridiculous talent level and factory like development process he copied from Saban and the utilization/promotion of the Georgia coca-cola/mega church bag network is where his clearly biggest skill resides.

It’s why some of us can have real faith in Mario despite the numerous on field issues in year 1: he is going to dramatically raise the talent floor to the extent that a mediocre game day coach could get their way into the playoff in a couple years.

The kid that knocked Harrison Jr out the game was a 3* ranked in the 500-600s in his class. Amazing what happens when you surround a kid like that with upper tier/elite talent....that kid was a missile and lit up Harrison Jr, with mostly straight up balls to the walls effort.

Only thing smart about Smart is his last name.

What a lot of people don't want to discuss is that due to Georgia having a ton of analysts and support staff, they told him that they were susceptible to the fake in that look. That's when having support staff comes in handy. It's obvious that they were setting that up and Kirby acted. Organization wins games, and that was a classic example of that. That's what Mario is trying to do, I can only hope that the boosters puts the needed financial muscle into the program to where they can do the same in the future.

Richt recruited well, but there were things Mark was not fully comfortable with, and as Bama rose up, you saw the rules change. There's a difference between taking care of a guy and straight up buying entire families and overwhelming your opposition with resources. Kirby brought the Nick Saban method to UGA and you see the difference from even Richt's best teams.

Came here to post this.

Sometimes being smart is one thing, but surrounding urself w/ a bunch of smart ppl is another. Kirby learned from Nick; u don’t always have to be the smartest or the best, but u should surround urself w/ such.

They continued to say it was seen from up stairs & alerted Smart to call a time out to adjust. To be a successful CFB team, u need an entire infrastructure. We’ve been sorely lacking in that dept.

Obviously there can be a difference between football intelligence and actual intelligence (although I think football acumen is at minimum an underrated sign of general aptitude) but what college coach would you guys deem as the actual "smartest"?

I used to always think David Shaw was a candidate and Mike Leach (RIP) was probably in the conversation.

I think this is one way how the game has really changed since we were good. The amount of infrastructure you need now is much more. You cant mom and pop it like we used to and win.

*development. It’s amazing how kids can preform when you develop them properly.

If only Richt and company had seen that FSU overload on the left side of the line near the end zone when FSU was able to penetrate and block our kick and win the game.

Would have loved to see a fake kick and run to the undermanned right side for a touchdown by us.

Oh well, so much for optimistic hindsight speculation.
