Can't look at his tenure as a DC here as a whole. Can't have a reasonable conversation about a deficiency in his scheme without offending your coach worship sensibilities. Got it.

My opinion on this Diaz scheme thing, he is fine. He coached in the Big 12, SEC and ACC. His scheme is fine, no scheme is unbeatable, back in the day Saban was lock down, then i seen it get lit up consistently. The only way for your scheme now a days to be great is to have a overpowering DL like Clemson had some years ago and even then they got lit up a few times.
I like Diaz defense because all i care about is turnovers and critical stops until we have just talent everywhere to matchup with any and everyone its the best option. Diaz has never really had a great offense to coach with under Richt and most of the times had to be holding on while the offense goes 3 and out back2back2back. Maybe this year will be different. I was at all the games when we went to the ACCCG and many of those games the D kept causing turnovers( Syracuse for example we have 4 picks and yet it was close) and stopping teams and our O did nothing so i know he can call plays, something i don't think Baker was good at all.
My bigger issue with our defense was the position coaching from a fundamental standpoint. Our technique and basics from our players have been atrocious for years and am hoping the changes make that difference. I know what Diaz is gonna do from a schematic standpoint and its good enough to win games. Do we have the players and do we have them coached up individually is my question. And also do we have an offense finally that Diaz can play complementary football with.

I’m too old and my memory has faded, but I recall some smallish receiver at Wake that caught eleventeen balls on us many moons ago (maybe when Alfredo was here). Drove me nuts how every catch was a first down or running free over the middle. Would LOVE it if him and Brashard did the same ish to other teams!

Based on them being talented with a good DB coach. Far less talented teams with far less talened DB’s with far worse coaches have good secondarys.

What do you consider the bar for good defense regarding Comp%?
Since 2017 our W/L record is 31-19 out of 50 total games.
We've had 13 Games (13/50 = 25%) where our Defense has allowed 65% or greater Comp%. We lost 7 of them.
We've had 22 Games (22/50 = 44%) where our Defense has allowed 55% or less Comp%. We lost 8 of them.
So in the last 4 years 36% of our losses come when our defense allows >65% comp%, while 42% have come when the defense allows <55% Comp%.
So you're really getting bent out shape over something pretty small especially considering we are talking about practice. Like AI said, not a game...practice...

I said passing efficiency defense. You listed every stat but that.
But let’s look at the numbers overall. You see a general upward trend in most categories under Diaz and a general downward trend in most categories under Baker. It’s like one guy inherited a defense and that was one of the worst in the ACC and immediately made them better. To the point where they were probably the best defense in the nation by year 3. The other guy inherited that defense that was the best in the nation and by his second season, they were all the way back to a middle of the road defense again.
But it’s not all on Baker. There was a three year period where every linebacker they recruited either flopped or got hurt too often. You can’t miss that much at any spot. Also, the rest of the defensive staff left something to be desired. Banda, Rumph and Stroud are no longer on field coaches. Stroud in particular did a good job on teaching individual pass rush technique but the overall play on the line suffered.
When something doesn’t work you change it. When your defense gives up a bunch of yards passing and struggles on third downs, you make a fundamental shift, replacing a linebacker with a hybrid safety and your pass defense and third down defense improve to best in the nation. Same with coaches. Guys who were struggling have been replaced. If you want to be a successful coach, you have to do these types of things.
Besides, I don’t see Diaz keeping the DC role after this season regardless of what happens. Whether it’s Bob Shoop or another big name, someone else will likely be calling the defense next season.
