Miami-Dade mayor: I won't block school system owning David Beckham stadium | Naked Politics

Miami-Dade mayor: I won't block school system owning David Beckham stadium Doug_hanks

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez has reportedly told David Beckham's representatives that he will not object to Miami partnering with the school system to build a soccer stadium, despite the obvious political play his camp sees for the mayor's 2016 opponent: Raquel Regalado, a school board member and daughter of Miami's mayor.

In a private meeting with soccer negotiators Monday, Gimenez was told of the potential deal, which would have Miami-Dade's school system own the stadium. Until then, the plan was for Miami-Dade itself to own the stadium in order to spare Beckham from having to pay property taxes.

In the meeting, according to sources on both sides, Gimenez reportedly expressed his amazement at the switch and said that he thought the politics involved were pretty clear, since Regalado's father,Tomás Regalado, is mayor of the city negotiating with Beckham.

But Gimenez also reportedly said he could "live with" the deal, according to one source, and would not try to scuttle it. The mayor reportedly stated his interest was in bringing professional soccer to Miami-Dade, and would not insist on a central role for the county in delivering it.

The school system's entry into the plan would reduce Gimenez to a much more minor role in the soccer talks, while potentially thrusting Regalado into the spotlight as the school board member whose district includes Marlins Park. Raquel Regalado and Gimenez are running against each other in the 2016 county mayoral race. Raquel Regalado declined to comment.

Tensions have always been high between the mayor's office and the school system, which has tangled with Miami-Dade on property appeals and the land deal to bring a mega-mall to northwest Miami-Dade. Injecting soccer into the mix is sure to increase the frostiness. As of Wednesday morning -- after The Miami Herald first published the news -- Gimenez reportedly had not yet spoken to Alberto Carvalho, the school system's superintendent.

Michael Hernández, Gimenez's spokesman, said in a statement: "Mayor Gimenez has always supported and will continue to support bringing Major League Soccer to Miami-Dade County. He would be supportive of any arrangement that would result in an MLS franchise playing in our community, but he continues to believe that a stadium should be built with private and not taxpayer dollars."

The potential deal would have Beckham's group pay to build the stadium under the school system's ownership. The school system is reportedly offering to promote Beckham's games with its students, and contemplating the use of field trips, team uniforms and classroom presentations to boost soccer prospect's among the county's youngest residents. The school would also have use of the stadium for major events, such as graduations and popular football games.

Behind the scenes, Gimenez had quietly been in favor of a privately owned stadium site in Overtown but was also supportive of the location next to Marlins Park when that became the preferred choice for Mayor Tomás Regalado. The Beckham group had resisted the location, which is more inland than the initial sites they were pushing in downtown Miami when the soccer push first began in early 2014.

Marlins Park went up where the old Orange Bowl football stadium used to stand, and the beloved name is the preferred name for the area now that it is being targeted for a soccer facility, too. The plan is for Miami voters to approve the soccer deal during a city referendum in March.

Gimenez and county commissioners, who last year voted against giving Beckham land at Port Miami for a stadium, would still have a role in the deal. A portion of the planned soccer-stadium footprint is county owned, though the bulk of the property belongs to the city and private owners.

Bruno Barreiro, the county commissioner whose district includes Marlins Park, said he was told of the school system's planned involvement this week. He said he supported the plan if it would bring soccer to Miami.

"If that's what the city wants, they're the ones negotiating with their property," he said. "I have no problem."

Remember there is no plan (other then apathy) for our school in terms of a long term solution.

One of the most historic, if not most historic, football sites in the country, and now boys play with sticks and balls to be joined by girly boys in shorts running around being drama queens. May Joe Robbie, all Miami politicians, Donna the whale, the BOT, and The Orange Bowl Game Committee all rot in that place nobody wants to go. This entire thing is a crime. Heck, if I owned the NY Jets I would have wanted to buy the OB to keep the site of their ONLY Super Bowl victory.

Add 10,000 seats. That is all we'll need. I think for most of our games, even 35,000 would be sufficient. It might actually create some artificial demand for game day since tickets would be harder to come by.

Maybe, since Dade County Schools will now own the stadium, the plan is for them to acquire UM after UHEALTH bankrupts it. Then, as part of the Miami Dade College system(you know MDJC) the Canes can play at new stadium. By then Al should have attendance DOWN to an appropriate level.

I am sure that is true, but have you ever been picked up off your feet and planted into the ground by a 300 lbs soccer player? Come on, girls play it, and not dressed in Victoria Secret clothing. Basketball is physical too. But in both cases we are talking tons of running with some pushing, shoving and occasional tripping. Are there high level skills required, sure. Old school book reading is physical too -- all that page turning. Okay, I am being a smart ***, but get real. There is more contact in the celebration after a TD in football than a whole game of soccer. Base ball is physical too but the collisions are not the actually object of the game, they are incidental. like soccer. Nobody talks about banning soccer, basketball, or baseball because they are too violent. Now maybe Irish Hurling and we could talk. That looks nasty.

Perfect solution: Sell tickets for SunLife (65K) and actually play the games in the soccer stadium. It's a win-win.

We already got a "new" stadium. I for one am not in favor of UM having to shell out a penny more after they already haphazardly threw hundreds of millions into Sun Life. Even that money could have been directed at more appropriate avenues. I hear there is a failing hospital in Homestead that we could have taken over. It's all about the U....Health!

Even the back drop during post game interviews has "UHealth" on it

Every other school just has their team's logo

Our school's commercial during televised games is no longer even about the Unviersity itself...it's a UHealth commercial

UM is trying to force UHealth down everyone's throat...it's all these Shalala buttf*cks care about

Going all-in on your medical school and health fields/hospital system is the easiest way to legitimize your university and gain national "prestige". It's also the easiest way to hemorrhage money if you efff up. If only they could see the overall cost/benefit of a dominant football program.

Cincinnati is starting a new soccer team, FC Cincinnati. That team will play in Nippert Stadium ... Where the UC Bearcats play football. That's a 40K seat stadium. The goal of FC Cincinnati is to be a MLS franchise ...

My point of that:

I really don't understand why they can't just build a 40K seat stadium for this soccer team, and UM contribute the cost for the additional 10K seats.

Adding that cost to a buyout amount from the Sun-Life lease would still be below the cost to acquire a new site and build their own from scratch. And the Sun-Life buyout could be reduced by playing 1-2 games there every season ...

Can someone with real knowledge on the topic explain this to me?

Seriously, is combining the incremental cost to increase the seating by 10K with the lease buyout more expensive than continuing the lease?

And as I understand it, UM doesn't make money at Sun-Life, so they could continue that arrangement for the initial years at the new venue through the existing lease expiration with Sun-Life, and then share in revenue when that's over.

Assuming my understanding is accurate, they have a smaller home stadium, no increased expenses, and eventually get to a revenue sharing point. Plus, still keep access to Sun-Life for certain games.

Anybody with real insight care to share why this can't be done, or what I'm missing?

They don't want to see it. A lot of these elitist BoT buttholes see sports in general as "silly" or "unimportant".

They are currently hemorrhaging money with UMH...it consistently operates in the red, not to mention that we overpaid for it by hundreds of millions.

You just got trolled, everyone knows soccer is for field fairies to prance around, fake injuries, and be revived with magic spray water.

Crap. I guess I am just bored waiting for Golden to finally get the heck out of here.
