Shodell on the morning podcast show

I believe some of this but practice being a country club? I 100% doubt and don’t believe that at all! It would have been more believable if the rumor was practice was hard and exhausting and it may have wore some guys out physically and made them play more tight.

We can have a lot of gripes about Mario. Practice intensity I don’t think is one of them.

Well - fair point on my broadness.

Samson is already in a rotation with McCoy, so it’s easy for him to sit. You may be right that there is punishment.

My comment is based on how Jacolby Jorge was allowed to play after committing personal foul penalties over and over and over again.

I did paint a broad stroke based on that one example because that is the example that was out there for everyone to see.

But you could be right in terms of how he handles things behind the scenes.
I literally have no idea.
The country club practice thing makes my head spin more. When I played, we had a week that was lackadaisical. Coaches knew it. Called us out. Made us run. Made us do push ups. Etc. I remember laughing in the coaches’ faces. We lost that next game. There was nothing the coaches could’ve said or done to us to change our attitude that week. It was all on us. Now in fairness, this was a loooong time ago and was high school, but the point is that (in my case anyway) something’s are out of a coach’s control

I don’t like the “pound in their ****” in the A-gaps approach we have this year. Easy to defend with just creating traffic and a pileup.

During the UF game, I posted that they got their *** kicked but wrote the chapter on defending our run game this year.

FSU wrote the Master Class on defending the run and UL pulled the Gators pass defense and FSU run game defense together.

We have the personnel to adjust (all three RB’s are good at reading blocks and working an edge), and the OL is good enough to run pinch-and-pull with a TE. They did it successfully vs both UF and FSU.
No one on the OL is getting to the second level on Duo. Brockermeyer is terrible at it. Our best run of the night (Lyle's 12 yarder) was on duo, and could have been a much bigger gain had someone gotten a block on the second level.

We still tried a lot of pulling against UL. We have to execute better when pulling. I saw a couple of instances of pullers blocking a guy who was already blocked or when we had multiple pullers both of them blocking the same guy, which isn't ideal. I don't see the upside in moving OL around when we end up pulling for runs (Cooper twice at LG against FSU, and Bell at LG & Samson at LT for one play against UL). Seems like we are just giving away that we are running and pulling, because an OL is lined up where he usually isn't.

Beck also has to start pulling the ball on read-options occasionally, like he did against USF. First run of the game we had 2 pullers and the LB who was reading Beck still was able to make the tackle on Fletcher. Beck should also try ripping a slant on an RPO occasionally. A little goes a long way in slowing down the LBers coming downhill.

Pretty clear that Beck knew that he had the spotlight to himself Friday night and looked at it as his Heisman showcase. Murray breakdown convinced me of this.
As far as the Mario stuff, I don't see why that's a bad thing. We don't have Cam. Our defense is thin, especially on the DL. And if he played like this against Syracuse we would've won the ACC and made the playoff.
I don't believe the country club thing for 1 second.

Country club is probably the wrong term, but if you believe they slowed the offense down over concern for depth defensively, why wouldn’t you believe they ratcheted down physicality during the bye week to facilitate some recovery.

One is very consistent with the other.

Probably bull****, except the "play offense like a limp ****ed coward" turtling since 4th Q Tally.

That parts irrefutable.

We ran the ball like 7x in the first half on Friday. I thought they abandoned it way too soon. We were down 14-0 with 50 minutes left.

I agree.... I am more concerned about his 'older Bobby Bowden' look of dementia on the sidelines... he has that "what just happened, bubba" look running around on the sidelines...
early CTE??

+ I agree that the traffic jam doesn’t allow for duo to be deployed.
+ Agree that pulling IQ should be worked on, but that comes from practicing and using it in games against different looks.
+ I actually like this solution of the RPO game to the field side. Punish the defense for mugging the line. If you get them to back off just a bit, it can give our big boys a chance to Duo and move people.

He said he has a great source who told him the following:

Practice was a country club the two weeks before Louisville. No intensity.

Mario has told Dawson to play conservative so that we have long offensive drives. Mario has told Dawson this bc we need to help the defense so they can rest due to lack of depth. Mario didn’t want a Cam Ward offense where the defense gets no rest bc we are scoring so quickly.

Also told him Beck is freelancing trying to play his way into the NFL. He’s not following the gameplan. Sounded like he’s been told Beck is starting the selfish, uncoachable crap he did at UGA. Not great….

Don’t shoot the messenger

This is dumb, we went down 14-0 really quick... It could have been the OG game plan, but to pretend that OG game plan doesn't go out the window as soon as you go down 14 pts is just stupid talk by people who don't know football.

Same TOP as a year ago, only 5 less snaps per game.
So you’re comparing TOP and snaps from one year where the offense was explosive and quick score with a defense that can’t get off the field to the next year where the defense gets off the field and the offense is ball control / conservative ? See how that can skew things ? In 2024 we averaged 1.32 more ypp than this year.

Offensive snaps. I’m aware one offense is better than the other buddy. I’m saying they went slow last year too.

Don’t

I believe some of that but doubt the country club rumor.

The offense is obvious. I actually think protecting your depth on D, especially #3 and #4 is wise because we'll need them and it's a long season. It's not a terrible strategy but Mario doesn't know when to turn it off when the team needs to just go out and score points.

I doubt the Beck rumors are fully true because being uncoachable is a sure fire way not to get drafted, regardless of what you show on the field. If Kirby smart and Mario are both telling NFL scouts that Carson is uncoachable, he's not getting a high draft grade. But I definitely know Carson wants to reverse the narrative around him and get back into the early first round conversation so he's taking shots he shouldn't be taking..we can see that

You put A LOT of words in Matt's mouth. No, I'm not his daddy, his GF, his BF, his b!thch, his cuck or anything. However, if you're going to cite the dude, at least put in some wording like "this is how I heard it" or "he said something like..." because you inserted a ton of your own interpretations, some of which I agree with, some I don't. Your first comment - fair. Second comment - Matt never said Mario told Dawson to play conservative. Matt never said who said it. Is it safe to assume it was Mario that Matt was referencing? Sure. But that's not what Matt said. Matt implied that the plan was to play complimentary football in order to allow the defense to rest a bit between series. You sort of explained that in your next sentence about the Cam Ward offense.
The last part about Beck....that's the reason I replied. Matt made a point to say that he only heard comments from one source about Beck and that he didn't really want to share them....and then he sort of talked about it...and it led to your comments about not following the gameplan and starting the selfish, uncoachable crap he did at UGa. You MAY be correct. You also may not be correct. I'm not shooting the messenger, but I am asking that if the messenger wants to pass the message along, make sure that what's being communicated is factually true to the contention being made. I'm not Carson's daddy, GF, BF, B or cuck either. Just a fan. A sad fan....

Carry on.
This is 100% correct. OP really took some lilberties with his commentary. He NEVER used the words Country Club or ever said anything like that. He said practice was flat. Lacking energy.
