Shaq had a rough outing. Sure, he made some plays, but he wasn't consistent.

Specifically, on the Cuse scoring drive. First, Dungy faked a handoff and kept it, fooled Shaq bad and picked up about 30. A few plays later that went for a TD, Dungy handed off but both Shaq and Jackson got caught looking thinking Dungy was keeping again.

He also tends to shoot the wrong gap way too often, and hasn't been the surest tackler.

As to shooting the gap, it appears that some of it may be scheme, what we are doing with our DL. The way our tackles stunt and DEs crash or get upfield is great for pass rush purposes, but when it is a quick hitting run the DL can get caught out of place and leave OLmen free to get to the 2nd level and engage the LBs. I saw this happen a few times over the last few weeks, where Shaq can't shed the block because the lineman had a clean shot at him.

Maybe that leads to guessing too much and shooting the wrong gap? All I know is all our LBs get sucked inside too easily, and leave huge cutback lanes.

Maybe someone like Coachmacho or LuCane can chime in and tell me if the DL aggression is causing the poor LB play.

DL aggression might contribute to certain problems BUT they all result from the other team's desperate attempts to keep their QB alive. A QB just trying to stay alive has wonderful benefits.-- how many pics did we have? how many TFL did we have? Do you remember Al's DON"T CROSS THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE dline play?

I re-watched the game and I saw him choosing the wrong hole and miss in open space, but I saw all the LB'ers miss what should have been sure tackles. I wish we wouldn't loop Joe Jack on the inside stunt. He's a speed rusher, let him go get it from his DE position.

I don't chart plays or anything like that, but it seems like whenever there is a big run, Joe Jackson stunted. Seems like you saw the same stuff I did.

Diaz must've seen something on film to stunt so much. I didn't notice it at all the first 5 games. Don't expect it against VT or ND.

I mentioned that play to Shaq... He says the Back was his all the way, but the QB pulled it a couple times before... so on the play when he did hand it off... Shaq eyes where on the QB and when by the time he realized the hand off it was too late and he knew there would be no support behind him. He knew it was going to be a touchdown. They went over this in Practice... He knew he was the QBs read and he was the determining factor where the ball was going... Case of Bad Eyes. This sort of thing happens every Sunday... Couldn't wait to get on him about this but after he explained and to 100 percent ownership... I realized he already beat himself down over that play. As far as shooting random gaps... a lot of that is different stunt packages.

Did Shaq get banged up at all during the game? There were a couple of complete drives, and it felt like back to back drives, that 35 was out there with 53 and 58. While the back ups did decent it appeared Shaq was out for extended periods of game action. I was wondering if this was planned substitution or if he was shaken up.

Now that i read my question totally understandable if you don't answer and give out an info.

I love having this guy on the board. Thanks for the insight Pops.

Thanks to Shaq's Pops!

Not random gaps at all. Just really aggressive approach to going across gaps. I mentioned this with GoldenShowers (the poster) in the original Manny Diaz thread. I also talked about this in the Cover 1 thread. I said this:

I know many are worried about our run fits at times. We need to get more consistent with our tackling, because how "loose" we become or over-pursue seems to be a symptom of Diaz's desire to err on the side of aggression and get offenses behind schedule. It's as much a byproduct of his philosophy as our ability to create TFLs.

Maybe it's optimism, but I think almost all our defensive issues are fixable with players we already have or a small infusion of Safety talent. And, if so, we're not far from more consistent dominance instead of splash plays. That said, part of being so aggressive with the front 7 is inevitably going to lead to some gashes.

Papa Shaq is GOAT. Some parents would take criticism, even if minute, personally. He knows that his son is only a Sophomore and will only get better.... and criticism doesn't hurt if warranted.

They will make mistakes every player does but hes grown and thats what matters.

Yeah he had a rough drive for sure in that 3rd quarter. But he played well for most of the game.
The stunts definitely made the LBs job harder, but I think they were worth it, because we were completely disrupting Syracuses offense. And sometimes when you're playing so aggressive big runs will happen. But Shaq will continue to get better at shedding/slipping blocks, and once he gets really good at that, he'll be an absolute beast in the middle of any defense.

Much more worried about Zack and our Safeties, and all the PT our backups get than I am Shaq.

The run fit problems are fixable just like the alignment issues were in the first 2 games for the dbs.

Watching the first time and going back through it does feel like we sell out sometimes on stunts/ rushing the passer and it bites us. But then again sometimes we guess right and blow everything up in the backfield. So frankly it's a little bit of give and take but it sure does ask a lot of the LBs in terms of tackling sometimes. Like Lu said though there is nothing apparently wrong that isn't fixable or teachable and I can handle those types of problems

There has been discussion that Manny likes to take away what they are good at, and I am all for that. We shut down Dungy and came away with the win, so all is well. But I saw some of the same cutback lanes against GT.

I suppose the question is why big runs are given up because of (over) aggression. Is it blown assignments, or that someone simply got beat? Good offense beats good defense type thing.

2 plays in particular jump out to dissect. 1:37:01 and 54:51 at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgcZ1NUGhTg&ab_channel=CFBLights2

I can't figure out how to embed, but I'm sure HurricaneVision will breakdown both of them when he does his review.

What I like is he knows enough about the game to question his son about certain things. They obviously talk a lot about everything and that is awesome to hear about a parent and son relationship.

Where did you play Papa Shaq? It's obvious you did from your understanding of the game.

I dont agree... I think what we are seeing is the Dline is having issues on running plays and not only are they trying to get upfield as fast as crazy they are letting OLs get into the LBs untouched and Shaq is burried by a 300 lber. He is having to guess which side to go but it would likely matter because the hole is so big and the OL ar so deep they can choose which lane to run thru. The agressive Dline is a double edged sword.
