They are both equal. They both were obsessed with running their defensive schemes as opposed to fitting it around the talent they had, but Shannon's actually worked to some extent.
But for all that "Shannon is a Miami guy" talk, people forget how he out and out quit recruiting the last couple of years. His last two classes were atrocious and were pretty much him being lazy and not wanting to go after guys. In spite of Golden's ******** up on SoFla recruiting, he's at least still recruiting. Granted, we'll lose a bunch of them when better offers come along.
What?? lmao no they are not equal, not even close. Folden is historically bad, arguably worst coach ever in team sports.
Both obsessed with running their defensive scheme? are you kidding me? have u actually watched UM the past 10-15 years or are u just pulling sht our ur ***? Shannon was actually a proven D-coordinator who knew what the fk he was doing with the defense. How anybody can compare Shannon's D to Folden's 500 yard a game prevent defense is beyond me. Not even close, Shannon's Defenses were 100 times better. Folden has fielded the worst defenses in UM history.
Shannon beat FSU, actually won some big games (which Folden has never come close to) and didnt lose consistently to teams we should beat.
Recruiting? The best talent Al has had here at UM have been Randy's recruits (including most recently walford, dorsett, Duke, Flowers, etc and remember he had to be talked into taking Perryman). We also had Teddy fkin Bridgewater on the way. Everybody hates on the 2008 class but they were the #1 ranked in the nation. Meanwhile Folden keeps striking out in Dade County losing out to FSU and UF and recruiting 2 star coal shovelers who belong in division 2 schools.
People love to exaggerate to boost up Folden. Shannon was actually held to certain expectations while he was here. Folden? not so much. If Folden accomplished what Shannon did he'd have a fkin lifetime contract and all the slurpers would be singing his praises. Shannon was bad as HC here, but cmon gtfoh ill take him 1000 times over al fkin golden. and with Shannon we didnt have to hear a parade of the most BS excuses you can think of after every game and be told to shut up that were too busy *****ing to see the progress after consistently getting our *** beat (oh and constantly throwing players under the bus).
fk Al Folden. got me yearning for the coker and shannon years, at least we could get excited about winning some big games once in a while. expectations when they were here were nothing like they are now. Now we make excuses for losing to fkin Cincinatti and keep hope alive for the fkin Coastal smh
Here is the biggest difference between the two. Shannon was poor at all areas of coaching. Golden is decent to good at everything other than the game. The program is in better shape right now, and if they hire the right coach we have a good chance to get back to the top 10.
I'll never understand why some of our fans insist on using Golden's sucking to whitewash the Shannon era. Just because Golden is a terrible coach, that doesn't change the fact that Shannon was also a complete failure as a head coach. It's like starving and being given a can of dog food to a can of cat food to eat. Maybe the dog food tastes slightly less horrible but at the end of the day all you can say is that wasn't as bad as the cat food. Is that really something to be happy about?

Speaking of pulling **** out of your ***, you apparently didn't see the part where I said Shannon's defense was better. Lol @ me boosting Folden. Ive wanted him fired for two years now but you've created a strawman so go to town on it. And yes they both obsessed with running their scheme. The fact you questioned this makes me think you didn't actually watch a game under Shannon. We ran the Cover 2 pretty much exclusively. We rarely blitzed which drove many of us on the board crazy at the time. We thought it was too conservative. This was of course before we saw the Golden Prevent D at all times.
That doesn't mean Shannon didn't field better defenses. He easily did because the scheme he ran was more suited for the talent we have. But let's not pretend like his defense didn't get gashed a lot too because it happened quite often. Or do you not remember us not being able to cover a tight end drag in that 48-0 debacle on the last night of the OB?
I gather you have completely forgotten how Shannon quit recruiting the last two years too. When Shannon was fired we had some absurd number of commits, like about 4 or 5 and only one visit scheduled. I know you want to defend him, but that's inexcusable. Its pretty well known he put no effort in recruiting the last two years.
Shannon wasn't worlds better than Golden. He was the same. That means he deservedly got fired and deservedly hasn't sniffed a HC job since. The same should have been true for Folden last year....

Randy was a great D Coordinator when he had Butch's talent. Randy could not recruit on the defensive side of the ball to save his life.

Look at the record...Randy was one of the best DC's that coached at the "U". Why do you think McAlwain brought him to Florida as the coach in waiting while he handles the Defense and Linebackers...Gators looked like Hurricanes Defense from the 80's during the beat down on Mississippi. I mean a BEAT DOWN by Randy Shannon coached players...

His defenses were still consistently good until he got fired. I mean even his defense in 05 which didn't have Butch talent were good. Even in 2010 besides the FSU game the defense was good.

exactly, but let these fools on here tell it and randy is just as bad as golden lmao
its like they dont remember his history coaching defense at UM. he always had top ranked defenses at UM and you got this guy on here trying to tell me that shannon was "stuck in his ways and obsessed with his defensive scheme like Golden" lmao shannon's worst defense at UM was 100 times better than any defense Folden has ever fielded. He actually had a clue wtf he was doing on Defense.
Talk all the sht you want about randy but he is a proven defensive coordinator who had alotta success down here. people only talk about his years as HC but conveniently forget he had been leading our defense since 2001.

But that was RS 1st gig in a stronger coastal. This is Al's 2nd gig in a weaker division.

2010 defense was 3rd in the nation in Passing Defense and also among the top in INT's, Sacks and TFL's.
