It’s time for Shannon Dawson to earn his money. It’s become obvious that our receivers are struggling to get open against better secondaries. We had issues with Notre Dame and now Florida’s defensive backs. Beck is holding the ball too long because guys aren’t getting open. Toney and Daniels are legit but teams are scheming to take them away and we don’t have a third or fourth option right now.

This is where a truly great offensive coach schemes ways to get other guys involved and get his main guys some easy targets. Anyone can call plays when the offensive line just bludgeons opponents and/or Cam Ward is working magic (while pretty much calling the plays himself) The really good coaches find work arounds in these types of situations.

We’re probably not going to play another secondary as good as Florida or Notre Dame for the remainder of the regular season but if we’re serious about a playoff run we’re eventually going to play another team that’s equally talented or more talented than us. There are ways to scheme lesser guys open and force defenses to have to cover more than two players. Dawson needs to get it done.

I agree and I still hate his run game half the time but let’s remember - the WR group has 100% overachieved. Maybe they just aren’t very good but have had a bunch of moments. I will say they seemingly are amazing run blockers I could not believe how mad they were making the UF DBs. They were fighting every play.

As much as i don't like McDaniel as a head coach, he schemes up some nice plays. He doesn't always call them at the right time bc he gets too cute, but he has some nice plays in the book. Tua just can't hit them, or panics and moves off any WR past 5 yards. Dawson needs to call better plays against FSU bc they have the ability to put up more points than the teams played thus far.

tough to really get a feeling after that game, it was a sloppy rainy mess.
It was, but WRs have a significant advantage in wet conditions bc they know where they are going.....yet UF DBs were in their hip pockets. That tells me coverages were being challenged correctly and/or film work by that D-staff saw trends in route calls and knew how to defend.

Honestly - a little pistol (run and play-action) and more variation in the run game could go a long way to opening things as well. The edges aren't challenged much.

I dont wanna go *** for tat because I like Dawson but our route concepts are very basic.

I don’t see play calling that gets guys open i see drag routes, iso routes from the Y receiver and screens so we can win a one on one matchup.

I would like to see more play calling that challenges the back 7 eye discipline.

I said this a few times last night in the game thread...Lofton was/is a key guy in the short to intermediate passing game. His blocking has been meh but he gets open and makes plays. Probably should have gotten 5 more targets last night.
If he can become a better blocker, he would have more favorable matchups and could be hidden better, coming in motion like Bauman and being used as a blocker/receiver within the same concepts.

For now, you're mostly keying him as a receiver.

a little puzzling as well how short of a WR bench we played with. We didn’t look to have much interest in playing many snaps 3+ wide. Dawson is predictable at times.
Loved the 21 wrinkles. Could do without any 12 looks because Bauman is ***. Gotta make teams think more. Post snap RPO (non screens) need to make more of an appearance

well, I have been crying for variation in the run game since Lashlee was the OC. we arent going to get it.

Let's be fair to Dawson here...

Yes, Gators had a plan to limit Daniels and Mali, but who could foresee #87 forgetting how to catch, run, or turn around for the football. I counted 4 missed opportunities to that guy alone in the first half that completely changes the picture.

Notice how many 2nd half passes went to Lofton? It was clear to me that the plan was to get the ball out to the TEs on short to intermediate routes. That, coupled with the early emphasis on the run was intended to break Gators out of the 2 high shell.

Beck seemed to struggle a bit with accuracy this week. Wet ball + snap/OL miscues in the first half just resulted in a sloppy, sloppy day.

To me, this was the equivalent of the Va Tech game last year. Offense had a lot of miscues in that one as well.

Thankfully, we aren't trotting out THAT defense 😭

Side note: Miami ran counter at least twice against the gator for all the “he calls the same run play over and over” folks.

The run game is inside because the OL while monsters they aren't the most nimble ever, so inside zone over outside zone all day and tosses.

Counters or traps are what he's calling make a difference.

They run to the right a lot and when to the left, they're pulling the right side sometimes.

I think he's calling with what he has.

The one play that I wish he would call it's postal PA with a 12 yard in over the middle, with a skinny post from the opposite side.

The LBs are going to be at the LOS so you have room and the post drags a safety deep. Vs any cover 1-4 it should work with our current play sheet.
