Just a long-time fan and football novice parked in front of his TV, so desperately need help of the football savants, coaches/ex-coaches and guys with enough time on their hands to study tape. Please share your insight and opinions.

What's the deal with Miami's inability to set the edge? Doesn't matter if it's UAB, Pitt, UVA, Clemson - everyone seems to get the edge against Miami. I thought the strength of Miami was having athletes all over the field who could run down ball carriers. Thought we had great defensive ends. So what is going on? Why so many designed plays that get around the edge or runs successfully bounced outside? Is it players, defensive scheme? What do opposing coach and their opps guys see on tape getting ready for Miami?

Help a frustrated fan, please.

They often play sub and exchange on the edge on run plays. I think you either play it full time or not at all, or call it very seldom to mess up the zone read.
What this means is End has B Gap and LB spills over the top and has contain, often times you'll see the LB not do it right and look at B gap while end is sliding into the B gap.

Setting the edge has been a bit problematic for us this year....BUT....you have to also remember that we are probably the one team in college football that for whatever reason the refs just almost blatantly don't call holding penalties. So really it's hard to see this issue for how bad it really is because our kids aren't getting a fair shake out there. Think about this: The #1 team in the country, Clemson, was called for at least 4 holding penalties vs us, and this is rolling out a 5* Offensive Tackle.....do you really believe that our kids aren't winning the matchups vs a team like UVA or Louisville???

Man the whining about holding penalties is the softest thing in the world. Every game, every play, guys get held. Theres no secret effort to not call holding on us.

We don’t set the edge bc if two reasons. 1) Diaz’s defense doesn’t assign gaps on blitzes. Google “manny Diaz fire zone” and you’ll see. And 2) are DEs are coached to get up the field on every play, which takes them out of nearly every edge rush imaginable.

This Defense simply will not dictate how the offense plays. One problem is we only have one tackle that can pressure every down (J. H-H). A second problem is our LB play is rather putrid. We do have talent at the DE spot, but we need better technique from Jalean Phillips. Many offenses are using his power and explosion against him. He is very raw with the nuances of this game. Too bad he will leave after this year. Roche has all the technique down, he simply is not the athlete that JP is. All-in-All I'd take both and be very happy about it.

If we would be more aggressive with the front seven we could create more turnovers,

Are defensive line was invisible. And combine that with slow garbage linebackers and you have a recipe for disaster. Our safeties have so much responsibility in run support that they get gassed

1. We need to get McCloud out, Not reduced snaps. Out.
2. The safeties would be less gassed if their immature buddy Carter could refrain from making the same obvious targeting offenses.
3. On obvious pass plays, move Phillips inside and bring in another DE.

Where’s Patcham??????
It’s funny you mentioned him because he did exactly what everyone here is complaining that our DEs don’t do. Especially when facing a run first quarterback, a DE who can set the edge and funnel the runner back towards the inside is a valuable commodity. Fans want to play pass rushers on every down until they see pass rushers run themselves out of the play consistently against running offenses. The guys who do the little things to stop the run don’t get the love because you don’t see them actually making the play. For guy who stuffs a run, there has to be other guys doing their job and most of the times that job involves doing things that casual fans don’t notice.

Totally off point take. We are talking about setting the edge and you are discussing interior pass rush.

Good points. What drives me crazy is the inability to make adjustment or the delay in doing so. Teams obviously recognize Miami wants to rush the QB with DEs, so they get the ball out quick and negate their efforts. Or further take advantage by getting to the edge on run plays.

It’s the double edged sword of playing a hyper aggressive defense. But you’re right, everyone knows we’re going to come out like maniacs rushing the passer and they’re just going to script plays that take advantage of the aggression. They do show a tendency to make adjustments and Diaz has shown that since he was DC here but I hate that it always takes a drive or two before they change things. It’s quite obvious that the opposition is going to come out and run a ton of misdirection stuff to get out guys out of position.

Wrong, I'm speaking of total Defense. Setting the edge is only an aspect of the Defense. It all works together. Perhaps you are unfamiliar in how a defense web's the offense.

the literal title of the thread is “setting the edge“....
