SEC goes to Washington......

Each school’s congregation will meet with their state’s delegation, but there are some one-off meetings. For instance, Keenum and Mississippi State officials plan to meet with Sen. Marsha Blackburn, the Republican from Tennessee who is a Mississippi State graduate.

Alabama coach Nick Saban, as well as Sankey, are scheduled to meet with Louisiana Republican Steve Scalise, the House Majority Leader.

Also in DC this week, a group of nine collectives were in the early stages of creating a trade association to exchange best practices, share information and have a voice in potential federal legislation. Representatives from at least five of those collectives—Ole Miss, Tennessee, Clemson, Washington and Georgia—are expected.

More institutional leaders are expected in D.C. on Thursday for a summit on the future of college athletics hosted by the University of Arizona. That list includes NCAA president Charlie Baker, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips, MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, Clemson athletic director Graham Neff and Kansas State chancellor Douglas Girod, as well as representatives from several NIL collectives. Walker Jones, the executive director of Ole Miss’ Grove Collective, will be on a panel Thursday as part of the summit.

Prediction:

West Virginia is gonna slip through the back door into the SEC at some point.

WV senator Joe Manchin (D) is leading bi-partisan NIL legislation with some junior senator named Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) in tow.

Manchin and Saban grew up together in West Virginia and remain close friends 60-something years later.

Sankey and other P5/D1 commissioners are pushing hard for congress to get something done, legislative-wise, wrt reform in NIL, student-athletes as employees and so on. They need a strong advocate - and the “swing” Democrat in the Senate probably is as good of a place as any to find one.

Manchin has intervened in these conference realignment matters before, trying to get WVU in the ACC but losing out to Mitch McConnell’s push for Louisville.

We need to get our former DC on our side in this.

Who the heck knows where all of this goes, but I do feel that any payments made should be public record for the conferences to at least see what's being paid. Better yet if it's all made public.

I'm curious how they think they're legally going to limit someone's legal earnings without some form of CBA.

Yes, “legal earnings” being a key distinction

Regardless of what legislation passes Congress, boosters gonna booster

Do you want money that you are making to be made public? Particularly if it is not money that you are making at your job (since they are not employeed by the schools).

If the schools made them employees (which they very much don't want to do), then they may need to be public (depending on the states laws).

I used to work with someone who went to WVU undergrad and started her career working in the WVU Athletic Department. She was there when WVU made its bid for the 2012 expansion that included Mizzou and aTm.

She told me a lot of things that went into the presentation, and apparently WVU came very close. Obviously, aTm was a slam-dunk, so the second spot came down to Mizzou and WVU.

Depending on how big the Big 10 goes, and what chess pieces are left on the table for the SEC, WVU has a shot.
