Honestly I think McCloud gets way too much hate right now.

Seriously ask yourself why he was bad at OLB, and if those traits that he lacked are really all that necessary to be a good CFB DE. DE is just so much easier for the player to know what their role is and what to do during every play. LB he had a lot more going on that you need to react to, and your instincts/feel for the game make a huge impact. At DE he doesn't have to focus on more than one thing per play really. He can just go out there and play really.

I think he'll be a solid starter kinda like how Trent Harris was. Maybe not as many sacks, but maybe also better against the run, and likely also better when Diaz eventually drops the DEs into coverage a few times per game...
 
Can we confirm that Roberts was playing DE when he sacked the QB?

Edit: just saw Cribby's post that he played DT yesterday. So we're really going into a season with 4 DEs?

Edit II: just saw Ishmael participated in the scrimmage so we're at 5 scholarship DEs

Great clip. Seems like a real smart kid. Haven’t heard much about him throughout camp, but I have high hopes for JHH.

Jess Simpson has a good track record of being a good DL coach as it pertains to rush defense even at the NFL level. So I expect to see our run defense, even against Bama, to look night and day compared to last year. Jess comes from that ole school, hard nosed coaching cloth where you refuse to allow a team to assert their will on you by basically running it down your throat for 4 quarters. That is a lost art. A "UNC 2020" wont happen on his watch.

As concerning as our DL depth looks anyone who doesnt think McCloud playing well isnt a great thing...I question whether you are even a fan. We need as many grown a$$ men as possible going up against Bama. And if McCloud can give us quality snaps..that is a Godsend. I am happy to hear he is making some noise.

I sunshine pump as much as anyone but everyone in this list is tbd at best. Bolden was really good first half last year and not do good last half. Nelson needs to deliver on the hype. As of now nothing more. Andres is a true freshman. Let’s see how he kicks in front of 80000 at the dome. Mallory needs to play a full season

Agree but their our best bet at top 5 for their positions.

I know the numbers aren’t great at DE, but I bet we go a lot of 3 down lineman this year with an extra safety/corner/ striker on the field. Kicking some of the more athletic DT to a 5 tech in 3 down. I know there will be huge differences in the defense. I could totally see a package of 1.Johnson 2.nesta/JHH 3. harvey/DE/LT then Gil keontra carter TS Ivey bubba couch hall. That to me is our ideal 3rd defense

Covid never happened according to CIS at the time. I’m not even sure which defensive staff was there for or prepping for the fireable offense game…

Lou. I know the kicking game isn't **** but I still have night terrors of Feagles punting the ball backwards against LSU.

I could have misunderstood the original post but I read it as top at their position in all of CFB. The guys you listed are definitely top of our team but still need to prove they are who we think they can be.

Nelson - It's arguable that he is the best tackle in all of CFB. I hope he lives up to his "first round draft" hype because we need the OL to be better. He has the skills, lets just hope he is currently healthy and can remain that way all season.

Bolden - He definitely flashed at the beginning of last year and the beginning of 2019 until the injury and also fell off hard to the point of almost disappearing towards the second half of last season.

Borregalas - As you mentioned he is a freshman so he is entirely unproven in primetime. We really just need him to be reliable and make the 40 yards and in fields goals and extra points but I think he will be the goods.

Mallory - He, similar to Bolden, has flashed but in my opinion needs a complete injury free season because he is a weapon. How come our tight ends seem to always be out with injuries for 1-3 games?
