Scary part is our defense will be better in 2020....

Next game is gonna be a huge test for our D. We are facing what has been our Achilles heal this year a running QB. I think Louisville goes to quick screens and RPOs all game long. They know this D line is hitting its stride and if they try anything that takes a long time to develop we eating upfront.

Don’t we say this every year and then UNC converts 4th and 19?

Yes. Good defenses give up big plays in big spots sometimes. It happens. This is sports.

It is even more likely to happen when those good defenses have new starters in the secondary, are without their most talented player (Bolden), and are playing in early season games. (The 4th and 17 happened on September 7th.)

Giving up a critical big play or two doesn't disqualify this year's defense from being a good defense - and they still have a chance of being a great defense if they can maintain this level of play for the next 4 games.

I don't know how we're supposed to take this as anything else other than Manny got involved in the defense. The difference between this team the first 5 games and the next 4 when Manny said he was getting involved is night and day.

Imagine what this defense would be doing with a recruiter on staff. We desperately need to make changes in coaching, starting with Blake.

I'm a realist, the LBs have not been good this year and you're kidding yourself if you think they have, stats don't tell the whole story. It's great, we won a game, I'm ecstatic, but that win doesn't erase the **** poor play we've seen way too often this season.

Got it. So your argument is, "they haven't been good because I say so. I don't believe your stats but I can't tell you why, and I can't provide other evidence to the contrary".

Cool. I'm glad this forum exists for you to come and state your unsupported opinion.

Dline will be even better, secondary will continue to improve, we are going to replace starters at LB with more athleticism, 2020 and 2021 we could have legit top 5 defenses.
You can’t say this. Who knows how LB unit will be. I can say this, ST will be better

I'm extremely bullish on the future of this defense, dline especially. The secondary has improved tremendously the last 2 games, in particular Ivey. As for the linebackers, I'm not intimidated by our youth because we should remember how well Shaq, Pink, and McCloud played as freshman. I'm very interested to see what Joyner can do when he's fully healthy. McCloud could be really solid as a senior, and Brooks, Huff, and Frierson all have tremendous athleticism.

Again....I did not state that the LB's will be better than our current starters, I simply said we are replacing them with more athleticism so I am very excited for the potential of the young ones behind the starters

We should be fine at LB having mccloud coming and steer heading that unit next year ... n then having Mr Brooks ready along side him!!! We straight ! Not too mention huff Joyner as well

Agree with this. With the striker position being held down by Gil and somebody else, we normally only play 2 linebackers anyway. One will be McCloud who will be fine. As long as one of the guys steps up to the other spot, the LB position won't be much of a concern.

and then add mccloud and jennings to the mix. it should be fine. we certainly loose experience but we gain so much speed at the LB poaition. I take the trade! actually, im somewhat more concern with loosing Finley at the striker position. he has played very well that last two years

I'm not hugely concerned losing Finley. Gil has been playing great this year.

Boy you are good at throwing out cliches. Too bad that's a worthless skill.

I can be swayed on this. Shaq doesn't grade out consistently well on PFF, and Pinckney is not the ironman that Shaq is. I think an argument can be made that they are merely good, not great***.

I think it's a losing argument once everything is taken into account, but it's still a viable argument. You have not made anything close to a viable argument.

***Great = all-conference, which puts you in the top 3-5% of your position in a given year. I don't think the LBs are all-american types (i.e. top ~0.5% of their position), at least not 1st team.

Defense could be Great next year. Have to find a quality LB in the portal until the young guys come along and if Garvin comes back they could be real scary.

Just want McCloud to be healthy for camp. I believe he's had some type of surgery and missed camp every year.
