Sam Brooks

Expectations internally are sky high. Some people think he’s the twitchiest, most athletic player on the team.

One best-case scenario comp would be Kenneth Murray, LB from Oklahoma. Similar physical profiles and both were edge rushers in high school:

Kenneth Murray (HS junior): 6’2, 215, 4.68 forty, 4.34 shuttle, 34.6 VJ, 42.5 PB, 115.35 SPARQ

Sam Brooks (HS sophomore): 6’2, 194, 4.62 forty, 4.20 shuttle, 36.2 VJ, 42 PB, 116.91 SPARQ

I think most knew he was athletically talented the questions were did he have instincts/mental game to play off the line and true LB role instead of rush end like he did all the way from pop to high school. We have not had alot of success with those rush end types in past (weaver twins, Willie Williams, Spencer Adkins, etc) Do you know if they touch on anything like that? Because if so thats really exciting stuff to hear right there.

Also Murray was an really good player to watch at OU, would be amazing to have him turn out like him..

Just curious, whats Hammets #s? Looks like a Brooks clone

He's by far the most athletically explosive LB we have...

He had a lot of doubters on this board, but if go back & check those threads you'll see a familiar name telling yall that boy is going to kill it by his Red Frosh/Sophomore season.

Every game he played in he immediately came in & made an impact, vs Bethune he lead the team tackles & had the highest defensive PFF grade & vs La Tech did the same thing, small sample size but his upside is sky high.

He plays so fast diagnosising & locating the ball carrier, but what he has more than anything is phenomenal change of direction & recovery speed. There were a few plays vs LA Tech where he initially shot the wrong gap but immediately flipped, recovered & tracked down the RB & still got the tackle. He has high level sideline to sideline speed & his instincts are off the charts.

Kenneth Murray is a great comparison, he also reminds me of Patrick Queen from LSU who just got drafted by the Ravens, both are highly athletic Mike LB's in the 220-230lbs range with very good speed & active feet.

And even though he may be playing WLB this season, I think his upside will be best at MLB.

I heard he’s smart and has a mature approach. From what I saw in high school, he has good awareness and made a ton of tackles. He wasn’t a pin-the-ears-back rusher.

Ryan Shazier is a local guy who made the transition.

None at all. Shaq gets his credit for his heart and loyalty. But these kids are the ones we've been waiting for....
Pinckney and Quarterman gave their heart and soul to this university.. if they didn’t come back for their senior seasons, we wouldn’t have had any LB’s to play. Also part of our first division title, and beating FSU 3 years in a row. Forever canes.

I think in response to a post @HighSeas made about Brooks last year I mentioned Tavares Gooden. I know it's unlikely we have verified athletic HS testing numbers for Gooden. However, Gooden's transition from HS rush End to College LB and the style he and Brooks chased plays down always made me remember Gooden. I think Gooden was like 230 when he entered the NFL. I think Brooks can be pretty close to that in the next couple years. Interested to see Brooks' instincts in choosing gaps this year. We know he can run to the sidelines and chase plays backside well.
T Good was a beast. Great comparison.

The last line is what makes it for me. Beat those Moles and i love you forever. Jarrett Payton crew....

We’ll see a lot more blown assignments next year, but the extra athleticism, agility, and explosiveness will make it all worth it. I’m glad McCloud decided to come back and be the anchor. His leadership and experience will be much needed in that LB room.
