Running Game

The coaching staff puts such a high emphasis on pass protection for the RBs that I think it sometimes may blur their vision. Example - I think Ajay Allen could be an absolute stud here, but he doesn't sniff more than a small handful of carries each game. Why? Because he isn't good at pass protection. I get it from the coach's viewpoint to a point. I think Allen is a home run hitter and guys like that need to be on the field more than not. That's my opinion and I'm sure others disagree, but that's how I see it. Barry Sanders was a pretty good RB and I don't think he made the HOF based on pass pro.

A couple other thoughts on Martinez (that you didn't ask for but you're getting anyway!):
I did not watch him much at all at Oregon State. I watched some highlights on youtube and saw tha his OL seemed to open more holes for him that what has happened so far this year. I don't know if this has more to do with injuries to Rivers and Rodriguez, blocking schemes, talent of OL, etc or if his OL at OSU was just better. I also noticed that at times, OSU used a FB to help as a lead blocker. I'm not saying we should do that, but I am saying that it was a help for him. More than all that, I kind of just wonder how much of this is learning curve/comfort issues. I don't know and won't guess, but he does look off and I don't think he forgot how to play football over hte last 10 months. It's weird.

Lyle is going to be a complete stud.
I'm of the opinion that the middle ground is to run more power off maguinoas ***.

Ajay deserves more carries. Would love for him to get more opportunities but if he doesnt, expect him to portal out to smu-type program (cant blame him if he does)
Still need CJ to get a few more touches a game as well
But simply not enough carries to go around and pass game is so dynamic no need to force the run if it just isnt there

here are 8 different runs. you'll see (a) stacked boxes, (b) the OL getting zero push and (c) our running back not seeing alternative paths/bad vision. a little of everything.

solutions. (a) audible out of run calls when we have stacked boxes and (b) get 21, 24 and 28 in the game more often

I have a play jotted down from my rewatch if someone knows how to clip it (@Memnon maybe). It’s with 0:51 in the 1st quarter.

You see our OL pin/pull and it opens up some space for fletcher. He got to the 2nd level but got tripped up. I’d like to see more concepts like this play.

Idk why we run that inside zone all the time. Lots of other guys know way more than me about OL play. But it looks like we are trying to play bully ball but our guys just aren’t strong enough to do it.

You saw what 61 can do in space on the CJ reverse (I think that was the play). Let him pull and smash people. Let him get out in front on a toss play to the edge. Let 61 eat.

This is how so many of our run formations are set up. You're just running into a sea of people of 1st and 10.

And Fletcher and Martinez don't have great vision. Martinez eventually takes this to the left, instead of the right. Fletcher would do this a bunch as well. I said last week, a lot of these plays look like they should be counters because of how the holes open and the blocking scheme, especially with the receivers. It's weird.

The next play here is a TD but you can see, if you wanted to run, this would be successful. They need to take advantage of the spacing they have and the down field threat.

Immediately post snap if this was a handoff then Martinez gets a big chunk of yards.

There is no marriage between our run game and passing game, its easy to know when either one is coming.

I have been saying that since last year, idk if its dawson still not fully transitioned from adding it to his air raid stuff or its mario/mirabal trying to add their stuff, or maybe its both

I will say we aren’t the first team to tip off the defense when we are gonna run it, our run blocking has been mid since last year as well but its definitely worse this year

Against UF & VT:

Damien Martinez - 29-125 - 4.3 ypc
Fletcher/Lyle/Allen - 22-70 - 3.2 ypc

Has Martinez been disappointing? Yes
Does Martinez need to step it up? Yes
Is Martinez still more talented than our other RB's? Yes
Has Martinez actually been playing better than our other RB's? Yes

And yes, Brashard Smith has looked & played better this year than all our RB's + Henry Parrish.

That's the state of affairs as of today. Will all this hold true at the end of the season? We'll see

Our number one is Martinez, he has 54 carries for 250 yards for 4.6 average. Former Cane, Brashard Smith has 70 carries for 509 yards for 7.3 average and 7 TD's. I cannot remember one carry by Martinez that was noteworthy. Now Lyle and Ajay have several remarkable carries. What if Lyle got the carries Martinez has? Lyle has 31 with 7.6 ave and 3 TD's. Johnson with just 6 carries is ave 7.8.

Also, what if Lyle got the carries Brashard has at SMU? I like everything about Lyle and would love to see him get enough carries to get into the flow. Most RB's get better with more carries. I also not mind if Johnson got more series since whenever he comes in it is either going to be a receiver or a sweep let’s see him work. Speed kills, get some speed out there.
Fletcher is more dangerous than Martinez and last year he had some great runs. Ajay and Lyle have break away runs whereas Martinez best was 33 yards. We need a running game to take some pressure off Cam. We have the tools, please use them!
I will trust the coaches with the RB rotation. There is a huge difference between starting the game and coming in half way thru the 3rd quarter with your team having the lead. USF game perfect example Miami O line wore them out. Martinez is a 1000 yard back. Catches and blocks and starts for a reason. Its a good problem to depth at RB.

Our running "scheme" is ******* dog****
Post of the year. If they don’t fix this, we’re cooked versus good teams. If they do fix this, not many can beat us and we become a much more dangerous team. Biggest coaching blunder this year was not taking advantage of the humidity last Friday night by injecting some more creativity into the run game. We got five good backs to rotate.

Agreed. It is why the play fake to Arroyo worked so easily but those types of plays have been so few and far between

WHAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE

We should use this formation more. Small sample size, but we've run really well out of it this year. Box is heavy still, but the defense is naturally stretched more horizontally cause you have 7 on the line. 6 popped the big run on 3rd and 1 late in the 4th out of this when he bounced it outside, but 2 held way past 1st down line (which was not smart). I'd like to see more of this and less of the TE motioning and blocking the opposite edge.

All we need to do is call some tosses and sweeps and try getting outside. It will keep the defense honest and stop them from selling out for the inside handoffs.

100%. This year because our passing game is so efficient I don't think we need to run more out of 10 & 11 formations, but throw the ball when we go heavy/condensed. Will caveat and point out that Cam's decision to run it when we went empty, they blitzed, and we picked it up was a thing of beauty. That's there all day long if he doesn't like his first/second read.

Very logical and spot on post
