Running Game

I have a play jotted down from my rewatch if someone knows how to clip it (@Memnon maybe). It’s with 0:51 in the 1st quarter.

You see our OL pin/pull and it opens up some space for fletcher. He got to the 2nd level but got tripped up. I’d like to see more concepts like this play.

Idk why we run that inside zone all the time. Lots of other guys know way more than me about OL play. But it looks like we are trying to play bully ball but our guys just aren’t strong enough to do it.

You saw what 61 can do in space on the CJ reverse (I think that was the play). Let him pull and smash people. Let him get out in front on a toss play to the edge. Let 61 eat.

There is no marriage between our run game and passing game, its easy to know when either one is coming.

I have been saying that since last year, idk if its dawson still not fully transitioned from adding it to his air raid stuff or its mario/mirabal trying to add their stuff, or maybe its both

I will say we aren’t the first team to tip off the defense when we are gonna run it, our run blocking has been mid since last year as well but its definitely worse this year
Another practicable formation is 4 wide with trips which always end up being a failed WR screen

This is how so many of our run formations are set up. You're just running into a sea of people of 1st and 10.

And Fletcher and Martinez don't have great vision. Martinez eventually takes this to the left, instead of the right. Fletcher would do this a bunch as well. I said last week, a lot of these plays look like they should be counters because of how the holes open and the blocking scheme, especially with the receivers. It's weird.

The next play here is a TD but you can see, if you wanted to run, this would be successful. They need to take advantage of the spacing they have and the down field threat.

Immediately post snap if this was a handoff then Martinez gets a big chunk of yards.

Holi **** thank you for doing my homework for me! (I'm too lazy to do screen grabs of plays...but at least I'm honest about it.)

This is how our OL blocks on run and pass plays....they push the line forward pretty much the same distance at roughly the same time. So what I keep seeing is straight line blocking. This is also because of box stacking by the defense. But for a strategic runner like Martinez, he is looking for a hole, where others run the play called even if the hole isn't there or bounce outside. Martinez does not do this. He waits for a hole or runs into the backs of the OL. My analogy is, he poking a dry p*ssy instead of getting nasty.

But, i don't have a problem with this. His carries should just come in the 2nd half after the defense is worn out. This style of running performs better. I like Martinez a lot. Just a different style runner.

The play you are talking about is actually C/H Counter not pin and pull. It's a call made up front to run counter when the 3 technique is backside. It's easier to block the 3 with the guard than using the center to block back.

Thanks! Thought those two to Fletch looked like counters. Thought he did a real nice job following his blockers and running hard against VT. Feel like with a few more opportunities he woulda broken one. Martinez ran well in the second half though.

Did we try this play again in the 4th with 6, when 50 got pushed into the backfield on the pull and 6 made a nice gain out of a broken play?

I will have to go back and check on the 4th and 6 but I know we ran it with martinez to the right in the 2nd half and he tried to backdoor it. I think things like that are what Dawson was talking about in his presser. The backs have made some mistakes as well.

It was at 10:07 in the 4th.

Yeah on rewatch I saw a handful of plays against VT when it looked to my idiot eyes that the RBs bailed on the blocking too early. Will check out the presser.

All in all I thought we did a good job in the run game in the second half against VT. Hopefully they build on it going forward.

We should use this formation more. Small sample size, but we've run really well out of it this year. Box is heavy still, but the defense is naturally stretched more horizontally cause you have 7 on the line. 6 popped the big run on 3rd and 1 late in the 4th out of this when he bounced it outside, but 2 held way past 1st down line (which was not smart). I'd like to see more of this and less of the TE motioning and blocking the opposite edge.
You see those splits?!

Sure, they're much much wider. But complaining about our splits is about as fruitful as on gambling the sun to come out at night, lol. Even with our splits as they are we've had success running out of that formation this year - Ball St and 3rd down against VT come to mind.

Funny thing is I think we are a half decent power block team but we zone block like **** and our splits don’t do anyone any favors. That said any time we double and release to the LB in a semi light box there is space for a huge run and we just haven’t found it consistently enough. Many problems, probably just creativity alone solves it vs most defenses

I think this coaching staff is asleep at the wheel and is the BIGGEST LIABILITY TO THIS TEAM.Pointing my finger right at Dawson and Mario. Martinez is a little bit better than average RB and I'm so so disappointed in his performance. The trio of Jordan Lyle, Mark Fletcher, and Ajay Allen can all run between the tackles with much more speed and quickness. Chris Johson should getting more touches on the outside too. An absoulte travesty some of these players are not getting the burn time. Martinez is a short time rental and he certainly has not lived up to the hype. Mario and Dawson should take a very long time out and examine their utilizations of the RB position. These skilled players want more opportunties and deserve more playing time. Out of anybody on the team I would classify Martinez as a disappointment!
