Running game and OL

I’ll say it again— we can win any shootout Mensah is that good— but fellas, let’s take our orange & green glasses off—- we were one dimensional against a subpar opponent
Take that to Clemson and we will get our asses handed to us.

respectfully ... this isn't selling out the stop the run ... this is lack of talent and/or strength on the oline

cantwell gettin stood up, rodiguez doesn't have the athleticism to get to the second level ... samson owned that rep, one of sj's better reps, and mccoy was solid

Is this the ole up the middle and lack of diversity op is talking about? No way an outside run got stuffed right? Lol this board is clueless about offensive schemes

Cantwell is not a guard to be honest. He should be on the edge, u have to get under people pads in the guards spots. Also not gonna really blame Rodriguez for that because the RB bounced it out. I dont think any OL making it out there. I think it was a miss read by the RB who should cut inside of Cantwell and follow Rodriguez, its a stretch play thats designed for the RB to cut back.

i disagree that we won't improve based on whose leading that room ... but it wasn't good

sj whiff, rodriguez **** near beat, and buchanon walked back

Our running game is built to win real games against real opponents. We saw that last year in the playoffs and against Notre Dame.

There is a ton of room to improve. But philosophically, we need to get used to it because our coaches (rightfully) believe it is a system that wins big-boy football games
While I agree with this 2 things can be true. We need to have run variation (outside & inside) the more looks we can master the easier big plays can happen. Plus we need to maximize all skillsets. Under center, pistol, stretch, outside zone, counter … tosses… this is basic football.. we gotta level up! Legit we run outside is 1st half vs Indiana we might’ve had #6

Lets clock this now. Our OL doesn't suck or any of that, yes some of our players need to play less but we have dudes.

What we are seeing is exactly what we were complaining about up until we lost to UL and SMU last season. Runs up the A gap. No creativity, nothing. You can literally dig up mine and many other's posts from last season. I was clocking it when we were undefeated. If the opponent knows whats coming and tee off, it doesn't matter if you have good and better players. That's what happened in the 2 losses, games we shouldn't have lost.

Also its freaking clear Mark Fletcher needs to be going down hill. Where he broke play off records running mainly from the pistol.

Its the same dumb philosophy they tried to force down our throats and gaslight us when we were complaining, 90% A gap runs...from the shotgun. Dawson...whom i actually like got smart mouth and testy.

Lets clock this right now and not be gaslit.

Btw im not saying we should abandon running up the A gap. That would be as dumb as running up in there 90% of the time from the shotgun.

Mix it up and diversify

I agree with you… but this year I think it matters less because we don’t have a QB that is physically handcuffed.

I hate this take. “Real games” “Real opponents”?…. So they’ll stubbornly stick to a philosophy against lesser opponents in fake games that will cost them a game or even a season?

I don’t mind the A gap stuff, and this year it’s not going to matter much because we got created players at QB and WR1, but when you don’t have someone who can erase 3rd and 9 and teams have keyed in on A gap runs (which ACC teams have), you have to be able to adjust.. and play to strengths…. Else you’re going to lose to non “real teams” and possibly sabotage your season.

All that being said…. This team is going to Vegas… there are things that obviously need to be figured out (and some of it will be rectified), but I don’t think there’s any team well rounded enough to stop this iteration of the canes. Mario and company built something real.

This is a passing team. Just get used to it. We have maybe the best QB and WR in America, along with probably the 2nd best WR2 in America, and yall are worried about vanilla *** duo runs in Week 1. Relax. We are gonna throw the cover off the football. And once you put 5+ DBs on the field and play umbrella, then we’ll run it down your throat.

Nobody is stopping this offense. Just enjoy how bad we pistol whip everyone we play. Pick your poison, I don’t care. We’re dropping 40 on your head.

this play is actually blocked up well ... but the box was heavy ... should have spit this out to a reciever

This is their philosophy. It works. We've had the same argument for two years and every year we end up with a great running game that is respected across the country.

Stanford sold out to stop the run even as Mensah destroyed them. It reminded me of how teams played our offense early in the 2024 season. They stacked the box with Cam Ward at quarterback. That's the benefit of a balanced offense.

i would agree with the pick your poison approach ... but rodriguez and sj were mid ... at best ... and stanford loaded the box ... but even in a light box, those were guys were getting worked ... especially sj

SJ had several brutal plays. He's a Center prospect that can't snap the ball, so he's starting at Guard- and getting whipped doing so. Glad the younger guys got burn this game.

Its Dawson, and the reason I said in another thread that Hetherman would likely make a better HC than him.
Some of the best coaches are arrogant, but they also learn to adjust. Dawson does this eventuay, but its crazy how he doesnt actually mold his gameplan mid game, many times.
