Running game and OL

Is this the ole up the middle and lack of diversity op is talking about? No way an outside run got stuffed right? Lol this board is clueless about offensive schemes
Successful outside zone plays are outside zone plays. Unsuccessful outside zone plays become "a-gap for life" plays via CIS magic. You have to remember this.

This is their philosophy. It works. We've had the same argument for two years and every year we end up with a great running game that is respected across the country.

Stanford sold out to stop the run even as Mensah destroyed them. It reminded me of how teams played our offense early in the 2024 season. They stacked the box with Cam Ward at quarterback. That's the benefit of a balanced offense.

Honestly last year is the first year I noticed teams really selling out on the run because beck did have limitations. Didn’t pick up on it in 2024, so my guess would be that it won’t be noticeable this year with Mensah. When you have balance teams have to pick their poison.

Not a big deal this year because talent generally masks inefficiencies, but I would hope that if nothings going their way they know to adjust. That’s it.

Uhhhh…. No- I have a functioning cerebral cortex….. what game did you watch?
You’re not very astute are you? Have you watched. Football before?
We did exactly what we were supposed to do against a conference opponent, on the road, about as far away from Miami as possible.

With a new QB, a new OL (for the most part), and some new starters on defense.

Not perfect, but we are 1-0. No reason to mope.

This is the team your massive brain think is going to spank us in a few weeks?

Porst less dummy.

Except what we saw yesterday and what worked in the playoffs are not the same thing. Our running game took off and flourished during the playoffs when we started running Fletcher out of the pistol.

SJ had several brutal plays. He's a Center prospect that can't snap the ball, so he's starting at Guard- and getting whipped doing so. Glad the younger guys got burn this game.
When SJ knows who to block and where to go he is hands down the best guard we have as of now.. Cantwell plays high at guard but he looked better then Buchanan and cogdon IMO..I think we will be fine … when we get SJ pulling we gonna be fine

LSU looks awesome

I will say this.. if we’re gonna run duo.. Marty Brown is the guy for that. He runs with a lower pad level and squirts through for 3-4 yards almost automatically. Like, if the defense knows it’s coming, at least give it to the guy who’s best suited for the play call.

That’s not a knock on Fletcher. He’s just a different animal. I’m sure we will see plenty of pistol downhill run schemes for Fletcher this year. They just didn’t even need to do it because Stanford continued to dare us to throw it downfield and we took what they gave us. Every game is different. Teams will watch that film and quickly realize they’re F’D if they bring their safeties up at any point to stop our run game. When Mali, Barkate and Upshaw are on the field at the same time, there isn’t a team in college football that can cover any of those guys 1 on 1, much less all 3 of them, and Stanford really tried it over and over, which truly baffled me. It was like their gameplan from day 1 was not to get bullied by the run game, even if it means getting absolutely vaporized in the passing game. It was certainly a choice.

My point is, you’ll see more of a mixup of run schemes as the season goes along because Dawson will adjust to what the defense is daring him to do. And the beautiful thing about it is that, whatever they choose to give us, we have the personnel to make them pay dearly for it.

We have the best offense in college football, and it will be showcased in every game we play this season. It won’t always be flashy or look pretty. But it’ll get the job done.

I’m really not worried. I like the way Samson, McCoy, and RR can move.

They def need to make adjustments in order to improve as the season goes.

Samson-Buchanan-RR-McCoy-Cantwell
Joel Irvin-JM-SJ-Congdon-?

Don’t think it matters if Cantwell starts at G or T, he’ll get better as the season goes along. Just know he probably won’t do much pulling if he’s playing G. Need somebody like a Jamal Meriweather step up as he continues to get healthy and acclimated.

respectfully ... this isn't selling out the stop the run ... this is lack of talent and/or strength on the oline

cantwell gettin stood up, rodiguez doesn't have the athleticism to get to the second level ... samson owned that rep, one of sj's better reps, and mccoy was solid

Cantwell will improve as the season goes along, and he’s also coming back from a little injury. Rodriguez looked fine getting to the next level, he was just indecisive and got beat.

I have faith the OL will improve as the season goes along but players will have to step up and adjustments need to be made.

Okay, uhm... I've already said something about this yesterday under @Memnon 's thread, which people should read, because he knows what he's talking about and many others don't, but they're starting threads like this one.

1. Stanford played plus-1, meaning they allocate a defender for every blocker plus one extra. This gives them mismatches defending the run and forcing Miami to pass, with them also pressuring the PA pass. Every time a RB stayed in protection, their LBers blitzed. Their hope was that a young and inexperienced OL would struggle against that concept of defense, which can happen. However, it puts pressure on the secondary to be able to defend 1vs1 - and we all saw how that went.

We had a flip pass to Mallory in the third quarter, I have it right in front of me watching. Mensah fakes it to Brown and eight (!!) defenders are occupied. Even when Mensah threw the ball, the LB didn't realize Mallory was already in the flat. I have no idea how people expect to run the ball against a P4 team that does that. Teams won't do that in the future either.

2. 65 had a F game in terms of run and lead blocking on screen passes. If he didn't pass protect very well and if he didn't pass off stunts very well, he would probably not see the field next week. But he will, because the rotations are necessary for everyone to get snaps and develop, because the correct technique isn't consistently applied. However, if you have one guy blowing up the run game on his own, this is what happens. This won't happen three weeks down the road.

3. If the technique is applied correctly, you get plays like the third Toney TD, the Brown TD, the Barkate TD - with a D-Line being stonewalled, not even able to touch the QB or the RB. Applying correct technique takes gamereps that you cannot simulate within a scrimmage. So we need game reps. The fact is that the O-Line played much better as the game went on in all aspects of the game.

4. We won the game 45-6, our WR broke a single game receiving record that stood for 40 years, our QB had more TDs (5) than incompletions and punts happened on his drives COMBINED (4) IN NOT EVEN THREE QUARTERS OF PLAY, but the OL is a problem for the remainder of the season. Got it. I can't wait for the scoreline when our OL plays a game acceptable to this boards standards...

#65 missed a bunch of blocks as has been stated

Also we did run Fletcher from pistol and had no success. However, I agree our run game is too slow and plodding. The LB's were easily filling the holes by the time any of our RB's had the ball. I want Pringle and Mallory given more reps. We need more quickness and lateral movement. We also would've killed them with a toss sweep/off-tackle as they were filling the A gap play after play. Also Fletcher missed several holes, again. Brown was the best RB yesterday by a wide margin. Props to Marty.

We were 111th last year in yards prior to contact, off to another terrible start. This is a problem.

Our running game is built to win real games against real opponents. We saw that last year in the playoffs and against Notre Dame.

There is a ton of room to improve. But philosophically, we need to get used to it because our coaches (rightfully) believe it is a system that wins big-boy football games

rodriguez with the snap and sj not climbing ... also another heavy box
Our run blocking was garbage regardless of the heavy boxes. We weren't just running DUO or inside zone either. Also saw more missed blocks by Lofton again. #44 had the best day out there TBH.

The people who want to pump sunshine and ignore we are seeing the same problem we had until like game 10 last year when we were 111th in yards prior to contact are going to need a reality check.

Looks like Brown missed his block also.

If Pringle comes right at us (when Cantwell gets stood up) instead on bouncing, Rodrigues is in good position to make the block on the LB.
That play going wide makes for a tough block for any OLineman.
We knew Cantwell needed a little time. Lack of experience is more of an issue than strength with him.
Rodriguez is who he is, but I can't get on him on this play.
That's supposed to go B gap off McCoy. #45 DE is unblocked and makes the tackle if he cuts it up immediately.

Cantwell and Ryan both missed here. McCoy had his guy. 2 of our 3 playside OL missed blocks here.
