Certainly not the death penalty, but hardly a slap on the wrist*.

NCAA issues first NIL sanctions against Miami in Cavinder twins case - Just Women's Sports
Hurricanes coach Katie Meier was suspended for three games, which she served at the beginning of the 2022-23 season.justwomenssports.com
Here are the actual facts:
- "...Reportedly, what drew the NCAA’s attention was a tweet from that night [by Ruiz] that confirmed the meeting. It violated several NCAA recruiting rules, including “impermissible contact” and recruiting “inducement.”..."
-- JFC what a self-inflicted wound...if Ruiz doesn't file suit now and punch back...well then NCAA just walked up and pimp slapped Miami and Ruiz
- 1-yr probation
-- If further violations occur, Miami women's basketball opens itself to additional and more severe sanctions
- $5K fine
- Additional fine equal to 1% of Miami's women's basketball "budget"
- 7% reduction to 2022-2023 academic year official visits
- 9% reduction in allowed 2022-2023 recruiting days
- Miami women's basketball staff not allowed to engage in recruiting communications until 3 weeks after 13 Mar (when transfer portal opens)
- NCAA stated in COI, “The Committee on Infractions will strongly consider disassociation penalties in future cases involving NIL-adjacent conduct...but cannot consider this penalty at this time due to the violation occuring prior to our clarification guidance in May..."
-- It appears NCAA (foolishly or not) isn't afraid to take on Ruiz at all...JFC just brilliant
If they did this to Miami over nobody-gives-a-**** women's basketball, what kinda probing and prodding are they going to do against** the football program?
*Your mileage may vary
**Yes against because those NCAA fuqtards hate Miami
Ok. Sure. You realize this is all worthless word soup that amounts to a small fine that will be covered by rich boosters of our women's basketball program lol?
They made up inconsequential penalties to a women's sport no one cares about that we're not even that good at anyway, just to fill a press release and to try to not look toothless.. 7% REDUCTION TO THE WOMEN'S HOOP ACADEMIC YEAR OFFICIAL VISITS! OH, THE HORROR!!. Do you know how many official visits the ladies use in a year? That amounts to maybe one less official, IF we were using our full allotment, which we rarely do lol. So that's a ZERO penalty. Starting to get it now? Dude, Miami literally negotiated these penalties to be unimpactful. We're fine with them. We are laughing.
Even better the NCAA came down and looked under the hood, spend a ton of money doing it, and got no ROI off it. They basically "cleared" every other sport at Miami of improprieties as well because, yes, they looked into all sports, including football during their "discovery."
The mopes are wildly wrong on this one, papi. Miami WON. Ruiz REALLY WON. But now he's ****ed. They poked the bear. Never poke a bear in February.
Only the most insufferable dregs of our fake fanbase are celebrating and promoting this on behalf of the NCAA as some sort of disaster at the hands of our NIL champion and an NCAA victory. You realize this is all worthless word soup that amounts to a small fine that will be covered by rich boosters of our women's basketball program lol?

Meier contacted Ruiz. That’s what they got. They’d need a similar thing in football and it doesn’t exist - otherwise they would have used it.Ok. Sure.
Thematically, at least to me, this at least should be something to watch.
Question for you...delete Cavinder twins and insert Cohen, or Mesidor, or Mauigoa...or worse all of them at a dinner like this...
same "slap on the wrist" for Miami football? If these were applied on Greentree, CIS porsters would already be laying seige to Indianapolis with catapults...not being a mope here, but think about...if these penalties were levied on Miami football, our community here would go pollo loquito.
Yes, that appears to be a (the?) key factor...Meier contacted Ruiz. That’s what they got. They’d need a similar thing in football and it doesn’t exist - otherwise they would have used it.
Being that NCAA dug around and the ONLY thing they could come up with was a “dinner” with the Cavinder twins should speak volumes about how Ruiz conducts business. To speculate what MIGHT have happened IF the football team was involved is irrelevant.Ok. Sure.
Thematically, at least to me, this at least should be something to watch. Also, if there is nothing to see here, why did Miami negotiate in the first place? That kinda doesn't make sense...and I reject the "Miami agreed to make this go away..."

There would be a GoFundMe page to pay for he lawsuit. A porster, whose attorney is in the Atlanta area, would send a strongly worded letter to the NCAA...
Yes, that appears to be a (the?) key factor...
if no one from women's basketball had been involved in this dinner, all good I think...
didn't Florida just pass a law where Universities can act on behalf of the student-athletes for these kind of things now??

Look at how salty our press release was when this was announced. Shade. Zero *****.

Fair point...so does the new Florida law protect Miami (and other schools) from these type of sanctions in the future??Being that NCAA dug around and the ONLY thing they could come up with was a “dinner” with the Cavinder twins should speak volumes about how Ruiz conducts business. To speculate what MIGHT have happened IF the football team was involved is irrelevant.
It’s all good. The basis was a UM employee making the contact with the NIL provider. There was nothing done elsewhere or by anyone else, otherwise it would have been flagged.Being that NCAA dug around and the ONLY thing they could come up with was a “dinner” with the Cavinder twins should speak volumes about how Ruiz conducts business. To speculate what MIGHT have happened IF the football team was involved is irrelevant.
Have no idea as I haven’t read the law. Doesn’t seem FL law, or any other states law for that matter, supersedes NCAA rulings. I’d say an NCAA ruling could be challenged in court, but that’s way above my pay grade.Fair point...so does the new Florida law protect Miami (and other schools) from these type of sanctions in the future??
Baby faced is derogatory lol? It's just to indicate naivety/age. Calm down.So not only are you doubling down on your criticism of Ruiz SR but your also now dragging his sons into your slander.
I haven’t met Ruiz or anyone in his family nor any of his associates. I highly doubt you have either. To judge any person without talking/meeting them face to face is irresponsible at best.
Do some of his actions open him up for scrutiny? Certainly. But to speculate about HIS intent/motive or that of his family while also calling them derogatory name’s nullify’s any validity to your speculation or conjecture.
Scared money does not make money. Ruiz is not scared of the NC2A which is a lot like the big insurance companies.
And before you start lauding the NC2A attorneys, keep in mind that the NC2A attorneys lost their case in California, appealed it and lost, appealed it again and lost 9-0 in the US Supreme Court. Had they never appealed the loss at the trial court level the case would only have applied to athletes in California. But by appealing an obviously garbage case the NC2A created national law in which a completely divided Supreme Court reached a unanimous decision
I submit to you that the NC2A lawyers are terrible and you, me, and @RVACane would kick their asses
I’m not absolving the NCAA of an agenda, but if the school wants to call foul, they need to site another example of a different school head coach facilitating a paid benefit.
sounds like you think his case is less than meritorious?Generally speaking, state court is a cesspool. But, I say that lovingly. It's a lot looser and a little more of "anything goes." The "street smart" but not actual smart lawyers prefer to be here. It's far more casual.
On the contrary, in federal court, it can get a little stuffy and self-righteous and sanctimonious. The academics prefer it because they avoid the wild, wild west of the local court. Courts are run strictly. Very little BS. You better be on the ball or you'll get whooped. Shenanigans are not encouraged or tolerated.
As someone mentioned earlier, the jury pool of federal court is slightly more sophisticated. So, if you want more dumb people on the jury (and sometimes you do), state court is a better venue.
If you want to compare it, state court is the local dive and federal court is a 3-star prix fixe restaurant.
Here, Ruiz would prefer to be in Miami state court. He knows all the judges. For better or worse, they know who he is too. And, presuming it would be a jury trial (which is questionable), he'd have more humble folks who'd likely be not as educated.
Correct. I don’t think he’s been damaged. He hasn’t lost a dime out of this. And I highly, highly doubt that there’s a single athlete that doesn’t want to accept his money out of some concern about some report dealing with women basketball players. Like anyone cares.sounds like you think his case is less than meritorious?
Not like because the case was about the limit of a California law. The ruling was a decision about that specific law, and because every state that has a NIL law has different wording, the ruling would likely have been limited. But the Supreme Court opinion, and in particular Cavanaugh’s opinion, was much broader.Had this been the case for Cali, wouldn't there eventually have been reciprocity extended nationally?
"...If it affected our companies I would go after the NCAA. NCAA will eventually disappear!..."Correct. I don’t think he’s been damaged. He hasn’t lost a dime out of this. And I highly, highly doubt that there’s a single athlete that doesn’t want to accept his money out of some concern about some report dealing with women basketball players. Like anyone cares.
I think he’s saying at the least that if he does, based on what’s out there now, he’d lose or it wouldn’t even get to trial and would get tossed out."...If it affected our companies I would go after the NCAA. NCAA will eventually disappear!..."
- John Ruiz, 23 Feb 23
So he isn't actually going to sue them after all ...
