Dawson doesn’t even utilize the tight end at TEU
Loaded at WR & nice to see 4 on the field, but TEs aren’t going away. Envision them playing key role in blocking schemes & helping an inexperienced offensive line.If you look at Dawson usage of TE, he primarily has used the TE for blocking. Arroyo’s senior year was the outlier for him as OC in terms of catches/yards, and he was still fourth on the team. Go look at his TE catches/yards for the other years he was OC for us and Houston.
I think the best teams find ways to play their best players. We do that on the offensive line. But when it comes to skill position players, when comparing the NOW talent we have this year at WR and TE. I certainly hope we roll out 4 wr and trust our Oline and Fletcher to hold up on pass pro. Too often last year it felt like TE clogged up passing lanes and with multiple shifty wrs this upcoming year, I feel like we would be leaving opportunities for Toney and our 4th best wr, who will absolutely be more of a passing threat than our top TE.
That said, I’m intrigued by Briggs, especially if he develops some mass and becomes serviceable at blocking, as I think he might be the prototype TE that legit does it all.
Yup. Gotta get the ball to all our talented WRsToo many WR weapons and RB’s. Just don’t see much production here…and not saying that it shouldn’t be…
Agreed. I see no universe where Briggs or Spafford are on the team in 2028.Great report.
Luka Gilbert: I feel like he has the dog in him to be the most impactful TE we have. He can legit, and probably should be, our starting TE. He's got it! I saw him in a practice where he was going straight at Chase Smith Hard (no diddy). I like him the most. He also has at least a 35-40 inch vert. I see it's reported that he runs 4.7-4.8 but he has actual good football speed.
Eliah Lofton: This will be a break or make year from Lofton. I haven't really been high on him like most of you all, but I do like him as an athlete. I think he has it! But I personally, I think he'd be best being considered playing on defensive side as ILB. He'd be certified baller there and eventually make his money there on Sundays.
Gavin Mueller: He is my favorite prospect at this moment. From a physical and talent standpoint. But does he have the dog in him like Luka is the question. I think that's what really separate players from each other. Gavin has hit 21mph and has really good hands. I know D-Money says Tight end is an age position, but we had two TEs over 22 y/o last year (Nickel and Bauman) and they both provided little to none.
Briggs: This is one **** of an athlete. He'll need some time to fill out indeed. I'm seeing a Cyrus Moss situation here, and because of that, and I know you all won't want to hear this... but this kid is a down-the-line transfer candidate. Too many factors for me to believe he'll graduate and/or end his college career as a cane. He's a hot head. He's from Cali- far from home. His weight gaining issue could cause him grief/resentment. He also hasn't really played the traditional TE position. He's used to transferring.
Im the biggest te guy....but yea.....less of them on the field please. Im good with it ...more four wide and two rbs...there snap numbers at te should be cut by 30 percent minimum if im the oc.
I believe more in Spaffors than Briggs.Agreed. I see no universe where Briggs or Spafford are on the team in 2028.
None of the bolded were recruited by Mario....none of the bolded ran their 40s above a 4.6 timed all at near 250 pounds. You wouldn't be saying that if the room had Njoku, Jordan and Arroyo on it. WR talent is way up, TE talent is either down or having unproven potential, we'll find out which in 8 months.
If it's the latter, I 100% agree we need to reduce the TE role as a share of snaps and add more WRs, double RBs (with Toney could be hybrid), even bring in OL guys as a 6th man blocking TE. Play our playmakers. If we find some at TE, great. If not, adjust.
Agreed. The talent is way down in that room (obviously someone like Mueller or Gilbert could eventually emerge) and the talent in the WR is way up. Get the ball to the WRs.None of the bolded were recruited by Mario....none of the bolded ran their 40s above a 4.6 timed all at near 250 pounds.
We have a ton of wrs...in the last two years we have wasted players like mccormick and Bauman on passing downs as clear out routes..im guessing in hopes of having the dc seeing them int he package and keeping lbs on the field or soemthing. Because it makes no sense.
The room isnt all that good at blocking or in the passing game so yea...less of them. If im choosing between Josh Moore and Upshaw n ****** Luka Gilbert the decision isnt that hard...If i can get Pringle ont he field for extra snaps instead of having Carver wham block im all for that.

Especially with @DMoney being the reason you expected anything from the TEs in the first placeStarting with TE is diabolical.
