Richt quote on why they didn't milk clock last drive

Even in the stands that night, without yet having the benefit of hindsight, I was fine with it. There was blood in the water with that Syracuse D, and we took advantage by pressing the tempo. Scoring, and being up by 8, was much more important than milking the clock. It gave our defense a chance to lock the game down without having to worry about losing the game in regulation, which of course is exactly what happened - our defense played fast and loose, and got it done.

And if Syracuse had by some stretch managed to hit a big play on us and convert a 2 pointer, well, we might have been left with enough time to do something and pull out the win in regulation.

Where was that killer instinct when he kicked the FG instead of trying to get 7 early?

It's called situational football.

In a 0-0 game, on 4th down, you have to break the cherry. Now, on the other downs ...

We are awful inside the 5. What makes going for it on 4th down a smart decision? I don't even view it as an aggressive decision. It's just a dumb one - especially on first drive of the game.

Fans like me were ****ed that MR kicked the FG and guys like you probably fist pumped the FG from the 1, in a 0-0 game, early at home, against an opponent you are better than.

I was more ****ed off that we even had to make that decision, but it was the right one. They'd dropped us 3 straight in short yardage....they were feeling it and their defense had the momentum right then. As much as it ****es you off, you settle down, don't get greedy, and take the points in that situation. Better to give Syracuse a small victory than to risk giving them a major one, especially early in the 1st quarter.

Can’t believe this is even a topic of conversation still. Rick absolutely played it right. Worst case, it’s like a two for one in basketball. If there’s more time left on the game clock than the shot clock, you run up tempo and try to get a score knowing worst case opponent scores leaving you time on the clock. Strategy varies by situation of course, but it was the exact right strategy for the situation. Welcome to having a real coach, folks. Try to acclimate quickly.

Everyone is playing the result. If we went three and out (which happens ALL THE TIME on our "up-tempo") and left 3 minutes for them to drive and score we would all be screaming for heads to roll.

Scoring and running the clock down are not mutually exclusive. If the concern was allowing them time to set on the line then start lining up with 10 seconds and hike at 5. Not line up at 28 and hike at 23.

With 3 first downs and milking the clock the game is over. Period. We gambled and it worked. Might not be as lucky next time. I hope if we are in the situation again we can find a better balance between running out the clock and moving the ball.

Hey there fella, it’s a results based industry. U win eg. uptempo to score against SU, you look the goods. You lose eg. Onside vs GT, u look bad. You can what if and question it all you want but at the end of the day you are judged on your wins and losses. Bama are dominating everyone at the moment, but if they don’t win it all, who cares? It’s like people saying “well Miami should be 4 and 3, they got lucky” reality is we aren’t 4 and 3. What you deserve and what you have are 2 different things sometimes.

Its prob why I’m not a big stats guy

On Hurricane Gameday..

"We gotta do what we think gives us the best chance of scoring points. And there are times when you will (inaudible). But a one point ball game, you know, that's like a tie, like being down by one, you know. And we gotta get the ball in the end zone and part of the reason Homer broke out on that play, I think, is because we were going with tempo. And they were having a little trouble lining up and a linebacker stick his nose in the wrong gap and bam. If you go slow motion, then all of a sudden you go three and out and it's like 'well why were you so conservative coach' . No, were trying to score baby. "

I came.

No I wouldn't..... Because more than likely we would have had time to respond because we didn't milk it. Syracuse would have played with pace too and we still had three timeouts.

The offense, while improved still gets a bit clunky from time to time so rhythm is of the utmost importance. They were in rhythm and the Syracuse defense was reeling. Go for the kill shot.

Al Golden would have tried to milk the clock.

I liked it when I saw it. It went against conventional wisdon, but he felt he had their defense on its heels.

It showed swagger on Richt's part.
