You stand zero chance of beating FSU by going in a shell offensively and attempting to ride the run game with no credible throw game. Like you said, risk aversion is for losers. That applies to going into a shell offensively too. If he can't run the offense, then he shouldn't be out there.

I'll buy into *** Akers when I see him do it. Problem that these guys are having is that they think UM can just lean on the run game and grind out wins. That's never happened here. This ain't Wisconsin. We are LOADED at the skill spots.

We need to find a QB who can run the offense and get the ball in the hands of those skill guys. That, in turn, will open up the run game.

If these guys think we're going to go to Tallahassee and line up in the I formation and play that old Big 10 run, run, pass game and beat FSU they're nuts. Never gonna happen. We haven't dictated the run game on them in 20 years.

In FSU's 3 losses last year, teams averaged 39 rush attempts versus FSU. Louisville, UNC, and Clemson are not I-Form running teams. This isn't 1982, brother. In FSU's 9 wins over FBS competition...33 carries per game (that is a bottom 20 number).

UNC ran it 32 times. FSU ran it 43 times. Yet UNC beat FSU. That doesn't support your theory.

Louisville ran it a lot because Jackson was killing FSU with his legs and they had a gigantic lead by halftime. I'm guessing they did a ton of running once they got a 50 point lead.

Clemson ran it 38 times against FSU for only 133 yards. Clemson threw it 43 times for 378. That is a heavier pass than run distribution, which also doesn't support your theory.

My theory doesn't discuss runass ratio...simply that you need to run the football in volume...~40 is your wheelhouse. Again, you can nitpick an outlier here or there, but again, look at the dominant teams in college football year in and year out and look at their attempts per game. UNC ran the ball 30 times per game last year...ended up 8-5.

Yeah we aren't going to beat FSU on the road with a limited offense. Our D is going to be legit but we have to help them out. If Perry can hang in there and keep his eyes downfield, there will be some big plays available. He can win the game with his feet without running for many yards.

It won't be on Perry to win the FSU game anyway...it'll be on a running game and the front seven defense. As long as he's coming along nicely, you let him start Week 1. When you start a freshman QB, you take the lumps that come with it. Risk aversion is for losers.

Key to collegiate success is the run game. Last season, Miami ran the football 28(!!) times versus FSU. Pathetic. 33 rush attempts per game on the season...even more pathetic then that one game. You just don't win football games like that in this era of college football. Being a volume running team doesn't mean your offense goes into a shell. If it does, then thats on the scheme, not the concept. The best teams in college football annually, and the most electric offenses run the football at least ~40 times a game...maybe you see a minor deviation from that, but your examples will be few.

I'd have to see the stats on that to buy it.

I do agree that we need to run the ball. I disagree with the idea that we need to be a run-first team that attempts to win games by ramrodding the run game. I think we would be better served to spread the field, pass the ball, and create big lanes for the run game through formations.

UM has never and probably will never be the type of team that wins with a run, run, pass mentality.

Its not about being a run-first team, but running in volume, controlling the TOP is important in college football in this era. The defensive metrics that help support it like low yards after catch, yards per rush attempt, and opponent rush attempts are all building up to that idea of TOP in CFB. That doesn't mean they have to be B1G style ball...although, there is a reason why Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin are among the better teams in college football..and, in the ACC, FSU and Clemson were running the ball 40 times per game. ACC's worst rushing teams...UNC (who ran above their year avg in attempts against FSU), Virginia, Miami, and Syracuse. Kind of a cap on how good you can be when you don't rush the football. You can get by against lesser teams...but when you play against peers or better...good luck.

Then we're fcked. I don't remember the last time Miami won TOP or controlled the game with the run. We had Duke, Kaaya and a pretty good line and weren't able to do it, so I don't see how we pull it off when teams know for a fact we want to run to protect a new starting QB. I'd love to lean on Walton here, but that's not going to work--especially against fsu's front 7. We may be able to use short passes and screens in place of a run game, but if the passing doesn't get going first it's going to be a real long day.

Balance is the key.

Our OL isn't built for old school Power run football, especially against an athletic Defense like FSU's.

We have to force their Safety's to respect the Deep Ball & the middle of the field in the Passong attack, otherwise they'll pin their ears back & bring heavy pressure on the QB.

You beat FSU by attacking the **** out of their Defense, that ultra conservative Run heavy Offense doesn't cut it & neither does a Checkdown heavy passing game either.

If we expect to finally beat FSU this year, it's gonna come from the Passing game opening it up for the run game.

You throw early on to push their Safety's back & then run the ball to keep their Defense guessing all game.

Uptempo, Quick attack, some Deep passes & no huddle run plays, gotta keep them on their heels.

Agree, keep them on their toes.... offensively, need to mix it up.

I'll go back to that Houston game, they put it on those semenholes.

When recruited we heard he was vastly underrated, figured he had as good as shot as any at winning the starting job.

Rosier kinda fast as runner. I wouldn't mind rpo with him for games 1-3. Then toss Perry the Keys at the bye week. Rosier can beat FSU with Walton and our weapons

You might as well let Perry start the first two.. Best prep for FSU.

I've listened to every podcast Peter Ariz has posted and lots of radio interviews discussing the qb situation going into camp. In the most recent interview with Donno, the shocking twist was that the pecking order going into camp was 1) Perry 2) Sherriffs 3) Rosier. Weldon didn't even merit a mention. That's why I was asking what the **** happened to him in spring practice.
