Like many of you, I didn’t really have any interest in re-watching this game. However, with the season basically a week away, and excitement approaching, I wanted to see how our last game of the season will compare to this upcoming team’s season.

I'm not going to go into the "we wouldn't have lost if we didn't do this" talk, but really, with how much we shot ourselves in the foot in this game, it’s really amazing that we had a chance to win it at the end

OK so besides the obvious stuff like the blocked punt, and all those back shoulder throws which I wont go into, I forgot that OJ wasn’t 100%, Damari was out, and Lucas was out the first half. That really affected us.

However, these were some key potential turning points that could have affected the game in our favor—

1) After being abused by the RPO basically the entire first half, we made second half adjustments, and there is a play at the beginning of the 4th quarter that really could have changed this game.

We had just scored, making it 14-17, there is a throw by Mendoza out to the boundary as a RPO and after being abused all game, O’Connor makes a play on the ball and deflects it. If you watch the replay, this really should have been a pick 6.

He played it rather conservatively, even putting his arm out on the back of the WR, to make sure he didn’t miss it and let them loose, but he HAD a step and COULD have jumped it and it would have been 6 the other way. This would have made the game 21-17 in the 4th quarter with ALL the momentum on our side.

Makes you excited for guys like Donte Wright and Amir Sears coming in. These dudes WILL make those type of plays.

2) Another was IU had the ball with around 6 minutes left in the 4th, score is 21-24, our offense is finally putting together some drives and scoring.

We have them on 3rd and 5 or so, and they are motioning a WR and get the ball to him in the flat and get an easy first down. Our defense looks confused and no one picked him up.

Basically allows them to chew more clock, eventually get a FG, and leave a minute and some change left for us to get a TD. If we stop them there, we get the ball back, only down a field goal, with 5+ minutes left.

We also doinked a FG earlier in the game. Make that and stop this play, its tied 24-24 and you have the ball with all your time outs.

Other thoughts I walked away with-

Without Mendonza, that team doesn’t beat us. He made all the right plays at the right moments and it killed us. Props to the kid. They had a special season, you just have to tip your cap. But I don’t see Josh Hoover having that type of impact, but we’ll see.

I think we need to go tempo this year, strategically (not all the time), in certain situations. In this game we had SO many 3 and outs and at one point were like 0-9 on third down. After the blocked punt our offense basically woke up and it seemed like it was cause were going up tempo as that basically lit a fire under our ****.

Other thing is I don’t think Beck’s arm was 100% this game. Besides the last throw at the end, there was multiple throws he missed where it kind of had you like—What was that? His arm looked way different in that HOF preseason game with the Cardinals.

Malachi Toney – man he isn’t he fun to watch. Lets enjoy the next few years while we have him.

Keelan Marion thank you for the Ole Miss game and CJ Daniels had some key plays in big moments, but we should see a big improvement in this room this year. Will be interesting to see if guys like Upshaw and Moore can be gamebreakers too or will they just be serviceable.

Mensah really has a chance to put up Cam Ward numbers this year, it will be exciting to watch. Offense last year really looked pedestrian at times and especially in this game. We need to hang 40+ on teams and don’t feel bad about it.

Good recap. I can’t do it yet. Too tough lol

The Lucas thing was such horse****. Absolutely was a farce.

Indiana just didn’t make any mistakes. That team and the way NOBODY ***** up ever is why I think we will see a 30 for 30 in 10 years as to what they were doing 😂
Still don’t understand why a B1G crew was assigned to a semi-final where the winner was guaranteed to play a B1G school.

OJ not pulling in a one arm interception in the EZ would've been a difference cause if I'm not mistaken, they scored? It would've been a tough play, but plays that elite CBs make.

did Josh Moore drop the screen in this game or was it the Ole Miss game? It was perfectly blocked and he would've had a huge gain.

Yeah. With all the mistakes we made, we still had a chance at the end. If we don't make any of those mistakes, and they don't go perfect on 4th down, we really could have won by 2+ TDs.

Not to take away with what they did, they beat us, they earned it. But I can understand why no one wants to rewatch this game. It's really crazy how things played out.

To add to your list:

OJ making a great play in endzone where he turned around for the ball and it hit him right in the stomach. Should’ve been INT.

Josh Moore dropping his knees to the ground on a perfectly set up screen play, wouldve been TD most likely.

The punt return set up by Mali with the pass back to Fitzgerald with the entire field open in front of him.

So many opportunities.

Also some other things in the game that contributed to field position. Believe 1st drive of 2nd half we have Indiana in 3rd and 17 and Blount commits facemask penalty on rb that extends drive and flips field position. Another time had them in 3rd and 10ish and Bain jumps offsides making it 3rd and 5 and they convert again. Small things but in a game that big they add up and can’t make those mistakes.

Hidden play I remember is halfway through Q2, Indiana has 3 and 10+ around midfield. They don’t convert and would have to punt, but Bain was offsides. They end up scoring a TD that drive and it’s 10-0.

In a game where they only score 2 offensive TD’s, that second chance at midfield was huge.

#1 is not fair. 365Canes did a film study on Ethan and said that was a good play and not likely a INT. I'm not an expert on it, but I take the word of a guy who trains HS WR's.

For me there's 2 things.

#1 Indiana went into that game way more rested than we were. We had to go thru a guantlet of physical rock fights to get there. IMO this showed in the 1st half. They took it to us. We need to get the bye or play more guys.

#2 We played sloppy. Too many penalties and mistakes. Same problem repeating itself here. Let's get this fixed in 2026.

That was the thing that ****ed me off. It should have been a big 12 crew. No teams from that conference were left in the playoffs so no bias. Also you know they changed that targeting rule for this year. Lucas wouldn’t have missed the first half because if that bs call.

Well I am an expert and O’Connor should have intercepted that pass.

Should've is an objective harsh take. This is not a drop by O'Connor man. The complaint is he should've jumped it better than he did to get there. He was never there.

Mendoza was like 50% completion and under 200 yards with no TDs

I haven’t rewatched the game either but Bain, Mesidor, Fletcher, and Mali all were amazing. Usually you win when that happens

That first half just doomed us and we still could have won
@ShadowSpring probably thinks Pringle was the best player on the field that game

Agree with everything you said, I think we fell back into the elixir of duo no matter what after the playoff success we had, we had golden canes tweeting their DC meet us in the A gap and fans sending them graphics of the avg size of olineman vs. their dline and they said cool.. In first half they stuffed all the inside **** and said **** yo size advantage..

Like you mentioned after the block kick, it forced us to actually open up out of shell and actually unshackle the offense, idk why we are soo scared of tempo if it will work. We get a first down on critical 3rd and 15 conversion and we go tempo and line up in Briles Veer and shoot 2x2 spread to sideline and the tempo didnt allow their defense to reset and we have our biggest play of game with Mali in space. Even with bauman on field you see the strain something like goin in a 4 wiiiide formation causes on their defense.. I have it cued up

Took us being down 2 scores and in the 4th before we could just say **** it and start gutting them.. Sad.. I heard oline pass blocking isnt up to par and we will run block better this year tho so thats exciting.. Duo here we come!!!

The 4th and 5 was a killer, a game changer just as much as the blocked punt.
Afterward, our players said there was a miscommunication on the defense.
Cost us 7 points.
Ballsy call by Cignetti, though.

Some of you are way too harsh IMO. He broke on this pretty quickly and covered a lot of ground here to get a hand on it. No hesitation at all.
