Rewatched the Indiana game yesterday

Like the old saying goes. Its not the plays you make, its the plays you do not make. Miami makes one more and they win the natty!! Make a few more plays and Miami wins by 10. I still cant believe the lack of effort on the punt block.

So be more conservative on defense and abandon what worked so well? I know you’re not saying that but where’s the line?

I rarely see this mentioned but on the play before Scott’s iconic pick 6 Sayin missed a WIDE OPEN TE standing right in front of him in the end zone because he panicked just a bit. 14 point swing in two plays

Yea we had a few bust in that game on back end, if Sayin was on point could have killed us.. That dline mauled him early and often that he was seeing ghost so he wasnt seeing field well..

Also one of reasons I feel like the D can be better this season because I think we will be better on back end, atleast I hope 2nd year in scheme we are.. We had busted coverages in ND with TE, SMU after turnover for wide open TD, TAMU big play, etc. We clean that type of stuff up and I think the D will just be suffocating this year, tons of room for growth in Pass D coverage
 
We lost to the ultimate loveable loser program led by a Hall of Fame Altar Boy who does it all for his wheelchair bound mother. Had we lost that game to some ******* program like LSU it would have been harder to tolerate imo. Still the most satisfying season in a quarter century, and one of the most enjoyable seasons ever. Took massive dumps on ND (twice), UF, FSU, Ohio State. Would do it all over again.
 
I finally watched it again too. That last interception is still a stab in the heart. But honestly I wasn’t as ****ed watching it again as I thought I would be. Probably because I have confidence that we will be back there this year. We have leaders on our team who are gonna use that loss as fuel throughout the season.
 
Didn't quite understand why we didn't run outside a bit more. Worked when we did it. Would've opened the middle up a little bit as well.

Also, Beck got nailed a few plays before that INT. Wonder if he was concussed.
 
Bauman converted two 3rd and 15s in the 4th quarter.

I see where o Connor is coming from. If you just blindly jump it and let your man streak down the field. But yes an elite corner prob sees what’s happening in front of him and trusts his instincts. And I’m aware it’s possible it was an RPO and maybe lineman were heading down field. But that would be tough for a corner to see I would imagine

I'm not going to go into the "we wouldn't have lost if we didn't do this" talk, but really, with how much we shot ourselves in the foot in this game, it’s really amazing that we had a chance to win it at the end


OK so besides the obvious stuff like the blocked punt, and all those back shoulder throws which I wont go into, I forgot that OJ wasn’t 100%, Damari was out, and Lucas was out the first half. That really affected us.

However, these were some key potential turning points that could have affected the game in our favor—


1) After being abused by the RPO basically the entire first half, we made second half adjustments, and there is a play at the beginning of the 4th quarter that really could have changed this game.

We had just scored, making it 14-17, there is a throw by Mendoza out to the boundary as a RPO and after being abused all game, O’Connor makes a play on the ball and deflects it. If you watch the replay, this really should have been a pick 6.

He played it rather conservatively, even putting his arm out on the back of the WR, to make sure he didn’t miss it and let them loose, but he HAD a step and COULD have jumped it and it would have been 6 the other way. This would have made the game 21-17 in the 4th quarter with ALL the momentum on our side.

Makes you excited for guys like Donte Wright and Amir Sears coming in. These dudes WILL make those type of plays.


2) Another was IU had the ball with around 6 minutes left in the 4th, score is 21-24, our offense is finally putting together some drives and scoring.

We have them on 3rd and 5 or so, and they are motioning a WR and get the ball to him in the flat and get an easy first down. Our defense looks confused and no one picked him up.

Basically allows them to chew more clock, eventually get a FG, and leave a minute and some change left for us to get a TD. If we stop them there, we get the ball back, only down a field goal, with 5+ minutes left.

We also doinked a FG earlier in the game. Make that and stop this play, its tied 24-24 and you have the ball with all your time outs.



Other thoughts I walked away with-

Without Mendonza, that team doesn’t beat us. He made all the right plays at the right moments and it killed us. Props to the kid. They had a special season, you just have to tip your cap. But I don’t see Josh Hoover having that type of impact, but we’ll see.

I think we need to go tempo this year, strategically (not all the time), in certain situations. In this game we had SO many 3 and outs and at one point were like 0-9 on third down. After the blocked punt our offense basically woke up and it seemed like it was cause were going up tempo as that basically lit a fire under our ****.

Other thing is I don’t think Beck’s arm was 100% this game. Besides the last throw at the end, there was multiple throws he missed where it kind of had you like—What was that? His arm looked way different in that HOF preseason game with the Cardinals.

Malachi Toney – man he isn’t he fun to watch. Lets enjoy the next few years while we have him.

Keelan Marion thank you for the Ole Miss game and CJ Daniels had some key plays in big moments, but we should see a big improvement in this room this year. Will be interesting to see if guys like Upshaw and Moore can be gamebreakers too or will they just be serviceable.

Mensah really has a chance to put up Cam Ward numbers this year, it will be exciting to watch. Offense last year really looked pedestrian at times and especially in this game. We need to hang 40+ on teams and don’t feel bad about it.

Beck's arm wasn't 100% all year. It's glaringly obvious when you watch him throw now. He was still great, just not all he could have been. It is what it is.

I agree completely with employing more tempo. Hopefully we add some more this year.

We are a duo based team, favorite run of our oline coach.. If we do anything we gon run duo no matter what lol..
 
The fact that our offense was THAT bad in the first half and we still had a chance was pretty crazy. We were awful. We couldn’t pass into the windows and Beck threw some horrible passes that were dropped picks. And they had three backers on the field a lot also. Becks arm faded as the year went on.

Don’t forget that if Indiana doesn’t false start on their last drive we most likely wouldn’t have had a chance to win it. They probably salt it away there. So we got lucky to even have a shot to win it.

The fourth down conversions by them on that drive where Fernando runs it in was just brutal. You can’t let that happen

Yep. They outplayed and outcoached us considerably in the first-half. Yeah, having healthy DBs would've helped, but their best DL was out because he got hurt celebrating.

That last drive of the half was especially disheartening. They scored to go up 10-0, and we took almost 6 minutes to go 43 yards and set up a 50 yard field goal. I loved Mario's decision to go for it on 4th and 1 from our side of the field, but the slow as molasses operation and turtling to try a very low percentage kick absolutely sucked.

We needed points there, desperately. And we walked around for 6 minutes only to rely on Carter Davis from 50. Gross. We absolutely should've went for it on 4th and 2 from the Indiana 33. We had about a minute left and a timeout. I know Mario has been working a lot on the Middle 8, and I'm sure the thought process was to not give them the ball with ~45 seconds in decent field position knowing they get the ball coming out of the half, but you're down 10-0 and you already went for it on 4th down on your own 35. You're clearly desperate, as you should be. Go pick up 2 yards and, at worst, give your kicker a much shorter kick.

Also had a key block on Fletcher's long TD run. Bauman and Mensah had good rapport at Tulane. I bet if you aske Mario/Dawson they'd tell you they wish he was here one more year, especially with Gilbert injured.

He converted *one* 3rd and 15. He had 1 catch for 22 yards, it was on the last TD drive of the game. Yes, it was a huge play. But it was only one of them.
 
The single biggest factor in that game was the first half suspension of XL. Watching that ole **** game again, their db was called for targeting which was more textbook targeting and the officials overturned it in review. The precedent was set and that call should have never happened.

No XL caused heatherman to play a lot of soft off coverage in the first half and they gave Mendoza too many free looks. Once XL returned in the second half our defense looked light years better.

Also, it’s the refs fault. I hate being that guy and I’m joking but there was a key play in the first half where they called a BS Pi- I think it was on Jaborie Antoine. They let the DBs play all half and then they throw a weak flag on third down to prolong a drive that resulted in a TD. A three and out turned into a long TD drive.
