Reviewing the Classes: The Class of 2002

Great write up,you’re going to see the same process throughout the years how we lose a bunch of great tri county players every year.even Mario hasn’t been Able to land the top player in the tri county.last year Ben hanks went to Florida,24 Jeremiah smith Ohio state,23 hykeem williams fsu ,22 shemar stewart texas am and this year dia bell texas

If I remember correctly that was the year of LB Poly that had like six players ranked 4 star or above but still lost to De La Salle.

FSU also signed a monster class but in true late bowden run pretty much all of them were busts.

Love this post.

I don’t know numbers but 98-2001 seemed to be foundational classes where guys no matter how they arrived, came in and were led by guys who created a culture of excellence.

After 2002, the star quality for Miami went up recruiting wise, but literally as this post shows, the top heavy guys seemed to stray away or not carry the same weight as the guys the four years prior. 2002-2005 had some incredibly high classes but overall, they lacked the dynamic off/on field character of the guys from 97-2001.

I believe the culture harness through the probation years/butch really created a perfect storm.

We need that back. Slowly but surely one way or another.
if we’re more blunt, our best leaders were focused on leading us the wrong way.

willie williams is one of the most naturally talented leaders ive ever met, and he led the guys to ruin. you can make a direct line to our downfall from his signing (and a couple in the 03 class)

I have the recruiting highlight tape of this class somewhere around here. I wore out the Hester part. IIRC Canestime is who put that tape together.

that was the Darnell Bing, Herschel Dennis, Marcedes Lewis, Manuel Wright, Winston Justice team -- while DLS basically had Maurice Jones Drew.

Losing Max Jean-Giles hurt. I remember when he didn't choose us in the Grassy recruiting chat. Then losing the two LSU guys, Bowe mostly, about a few days before signing day.

I went back and looked up the game, in the moment it was billed as discipline, coaching, etc over talent but De La Salle had like 3 NFL guys (Jones Drew, Derek Landry, and Demetrius Williams) plus the QB signed with Michigan while Poly had 2 legit NFL guys (Lewis, Justice) and couple of fringe NFL guys.

That’s true to a degree. Willie was actually apart of the 2004. Another highly elevated group that fell short, but I do think the 2003 class we put a lot into Kyle Wright being the savior that’ll elevate and the environment changed to something that wasn’t sustainable.

I think miami was destined for that kind of turn though because of how CFB rapidly changed.

Still, it was unique, for me the biggest issue was Coker staying being the “Apple in the Garden of Eden” if you will.

The 2001 team wanted him and they are literally the greatest ever. But the university has suffered ever since because he didn’t have sustainability to keep UM elite once that special unique group of guys left after 2001.

It was the perfect short term gain, long term pain. Miami hasn’t recovered from it.

Had we hired Alvarez, he’d be looked at as a top 15-20 ALLTIME guy and Miami likely stays a top 5-10 team through probably 2006. We definitely repeat against OSU and who knows what guys joins if that happens.

But still, the player and classes themselves underdeveloped after 2002.

David Joseph never considered Miami and wanted to leave. It was Michigan St or Oklahoma.
This is correct grew up with him and playing against him ( still have a head ache)

Big Max was a miss but he got theat good nil package. Those 2 alone change trajectory.

Davin was built like green mile and big max was wide as an escalade.

He was! Also he wasn’t the starting QB that season on that championship team. The starter got knocked out of the state title game early and Meriweather came in and showed out.
i think he kind of was always the starter they beat up on a LOADED MIAMI NORTHWESTERN TEAM.

Meriweather was a **** problem on that field.

another thing i havent seen as of yet either was..........

alot of our high end talent would jump to the nfl early.

reason being the culture of our school where guys come ome to work out is a gift n a curse as those guys see their same teammate they were shearing lil caesars pizza with pull back up in escalades and they jump in a need to get there.

Nevin Shapiro miso soups and yacht parties wasnt keeping these kids here an extra year.

The original Ben Hanks went to UF.

- JJ was a loss

- Hykeem williams wasnt thought of locally as the top player.

-Dia Bell aint a top player.

Yeah I’m a Bears fan and watched him last year maul dudes almost 20 years younger than him. He’s 41 looks like he could easily play 2-3 more years.
